Introduction Metal forming is materials processing technique which has been one of the oldest techniques used for manufacturing. It plays an important role in modern manufacturing techniques. Metal forming allows us to produce a desired geometrical shape with any material required. It exploits the ability of material to flow plastically in solid state with little or no waste. Metal forming causes increase of the material strength by work-hardening, and also residual compressive stresses in certain regions of a component increases its life. Also it gives component a good surface finish. Analytical Methods of Plasticity Analytical methods are used to provide information such as required loads, flow filed, tool-workpiece friction, flaws, etc. using plasticity theory. The analytical approach predicts the deformed profiles and forging loads for certain die combinations. Two of the analytical methods used for analysis of metal forming processes are: Slab (free body equilibrium) method Slip line method.…show more content…
The Slab Method (SM) is also known as stress local analysis method. The slab method can be used for approximate soluion when the stresses are not necessarily principal stresses. Effects such as homogeneity of deformation, temperature and strain rate effects are not taken into account. 1.1.3 Slip Line Method „This approach is used to model plastic deformation in plane strain only for a solid that can be represented as a rigid - plastic body. Elasticity is not included and the loading has to be quasi-static.“ Finite element modelling has took over this approach in terms of application. But slip line theory can find analytical solutions to many of metal forming processes, and utilises plots showing the directions of maximum shear stress in a rigid-plastic body which is deforming plastically in plane strain.
