For a lot of people, electricity is not a luxury but an important and necessary commodity. Electricity might be expensive, but life without it would be extremely difficult. People panic when electricity goes out for a few hours because of some infrastructural damage or storms. A lot of disaster scenarios often begin with the chaos that would ensue if a town or state or even the entire country 's power supply where to be cut. Companies would close, industries would fall, people would not be able to use the appliances that make daily life easy. If you don 't ever want to find yourself in a situation like that, you would look at alternative energy sources like solar panels. The problem with alternative electricity sources is that they are complex and too expensive for the average person to afford. Installing a small solar panel on your roof can start around $2000 Besides this high start up cost, alternative energy technologies need constant maintenance and they can only be used where they have been connected. They are not portable which means when you move, you would have to leave everything behind and start afresh.
