Smaug is a vast red-golden dragon with fiery breath. He has sharp claws and strong jaws. His belly was crusted with gold and jewelry. His flames can scorch a city and his huge wings can carry him great distances. “My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail is a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death” (page 245) Smaug is evil, cruel and violent. He doesn’t care about anyone. He only wants power and wealth and nothing more. Greediness and intelligence are part of his personality too. His sense of smell is so sharp allowing him to know who is talking to him from far away. “There was a most specially greedy, strong and wicked worm called Smaug.” (page 27) Smaug is the antagonist

Often Smeagol is considered evil, but what is not thought of most often is who Smeagol was when he had the One Ring, also when the One Ring was not with him. Smeagol couldn’t have been evil when he didn’t even know of the One Ring. Bilbo Baggins, a supposedly unadventurous hobbit is requested to go on a difficult journey with a group of dwarves by none other than Gandalf, the well-known wizard himself. Ishmael Beah, a young, happy boy goes out with his friends without saying goodbye, not knowing it may be his last time to see them. While with his friends, his town gets attacked by the rebels and his whole world turns upside down.

Bilbo’s third trial is finding a way for the dwarves to escape the wood-elves palace. When the guard is drunk, Bilbo lets the dwarves out by stealing the keys and pushing the dwarves into barrels. After a hero’s many trials, they face their ultimate enemy, and for Bilbo that is Smaug, the dragon. Smaug shares qualities from the other does Bilbo faced, but with more powers and fearsomeness. Facing many new enemies in his trials, they all leave Bilbo something in return for defeating them such as the knowledge that no adventurer will be left behind, courage and respect from the dwarves as he helped set them free when all hope seemed to be lost, confidence and willingness to fight and lastly, the knowledge that while his friends can protect him, he can protect his friends.
J.R.R Tolkien uses author's craft moves such as having characters represent a bigger idea, in the Hobbit. One major topic in this fictional epic is greed. Tolkien shows the topic of greed mainly through the viscous dragon Smaug. Smaug's life only consists of hoarding his treasure, and making sure that nobody else can steal it back. Unfortunately for Smaug, that was the entire purpose of the quest that a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins was recruited to be on, and potentially lead.
