I have had few passions more intense and longstanding than that of playing the snare drum in the marching band. If you asked me now why I love the snare drum, I would tell you that it is the driving force of a marching band, and how even though it is a seemingly easy instrument, it requires an immense amount of skill and technique in order to play perfectly articulated notes. Why I actually started to love the snare drum, however, was because it was loud.
My passion for the snare drum can be traced back to my town’s annual Memorial Day Parade, where every year, what I look forward to the most is watching the high school drumline. For the day of the parade, and weeks following it, all I think is one day being one of the snare drummers. This

This was the first time in my life where I had to deal with the reality of failing at something I loved, but I was still young, and I knew that I had more opportunities. I spent countless hours working to be the best possible on my new instrument. I wanted to show my dedication by putting in as much time as necessary in order to get on the drumline by junior year. I would often stay after school and practice with my friends who were on the drumline, taking in every tidbit of information about technique and practicing that would get me closer to my goal of playing snare drum. As drumline auditions came closer, however, I became consumed by a fear of failure, knowing that everyone on the snare line was much better than me and that they would all stay on, so I assumed that I had no chance of making it. That being said, I put everything that I had in that audition, and felt that it was an accurate representation of the work that I had put in. I was full of anticipation, believing that I might finally fulfill my dream of being on the snare line. The look on the band director’s face as he walked towards me told a different story, though, and my enthusiasm was instantly overcome by remorse. To him I was of more use to the band in the front ensemble than in the
America's Greatest Gift There is no doubt that Jazz music is one of greatest things to come from American culture. It had sprouted up from cultural and spiritual hymns a global sound that has no restraints. From the early slave songs with their call and response style, to the later Swing and Bebop era tones, Jazz became the frontline for American music where it still remains relevant to this day. It all started in the later parts of the 19th with African slaves brought over from the Atlantic slave trade.
I am a respectful and caring girl, who wants the best for Lindbergh Bands. I know I may not be absolutely perfect, but I will hopefully make the snare line better if I am the center snare member. The drum line has the capabilities to do more than we are doing now. Visuals will make the line more entertaining for the audience and even the drummers. I will make the line a learning experience, but also entertaining at the same time.
As the play advanced in competition my small part was recognized and I received All-Star Cast. My directors later told me the judges had to seek them out to find out who the child dancer was. The lessons in all of this is, trust your instincts, step outside of your comfort zone, work hard and in the future when I feel like “I need something just for me”, do
baton twirlers, the cheerleaders, the flag spinning, the marching band, the mascot, the Saluki shakers, and the last group of cheerleaders. There is an empty space between the last group and the coming cars. Anyway, it was good to have a minute to organize what I was able to write. The rain did not stop at all, it stopped raining for some minutes, but it started again. The Interim Chancellor, Dr. Brad Cowell passed driving a car, there is a couple in this car, I am not sure who they are; but I guess they are from the '65 class which is celebrating 50 years of their graduation.
S- Jazz identifies herself as a transgender, she was born a boy but feels and acts like a girl. She states that she does not care what other people think about her and she feels comfortable to talk to other people about being transgender. She describes that when talking to boys her age she immediately discloses her transgender status to them. Jazz describes that what hurts her most about being transgender is her boy genitalia, “I feel like a girl but when I look down there it reminds me.”
Music is very important to any tribal group of native Americans. The drum not only is a musical instrument but it carries cultural and spiritual value along with it. In fact, it is believed that the drum is the heartbeat of the Native American nation. Learning can be impactful when wonderful, inspirational people are apart of the
At Marcus High School, I stayed involved heavily with band and drumline. These extracurriculars demanded immense time management and a sharp level of focus. During sophomore, junior and senior years, I was able to join the student leadership corps and become the leader of the Snareline, an instrument that requires high concentration in comparison to the rest of the band. I was tasked with making sure the incoming students understood their music, and if unable, I taught them. This position led me to become an understanding leader with the desire for greatness.
Smithville recently had Kyle Holt, Michael Fletcher, Amberly Langford, and Colton James placed in honorable mention (playing Jazz Drum Set, Tuba, Clarinet, and Tenor Saxophone, respectively) and we had Greta Zolynas (Alto Saxophone) place 2nd chair! On the second Saturday of December, all three bands (Middle School,High School, and High School Honor) took part in an all-day clinic with three special guest directors. This year’s directors were Dr. Nathan Rinnert, Marvin Manring and Ky Hascall. “We’ve tried to hire directors, who are, for a lack of a better word, prestigious, collegiate, and or directors that are also composers that have separated themselves, as not only great music educators, but great conductors.
I want to be the next drum major, because I feel that I’m ready to take on the position and I feel that being the next drum major will help me work towards my future goals in life. I have grown as a leader and learned many different techniques that have helped me develop as a better leader. With the 2017-2018 season wrapping up, I feel that I wasn’t ready and didn’t fully commit to the standards of a drum major. Now, I feel that I’m ready to the take on the position to grow better musicianship and leadership skills. When I graduate, I want to be a drum major of a college marching band and go to school to become a band director.
Marching band; copious amounts of people scoff at the sound of those words. I often hear students commenting on how easy marching band is, how we don’t train like the football players do. At Anderson High School, that’s not the case, the marching band trains for just as long. As a band of over 125 individuals, it takes determination, pride, and confidence to achieve the goals we have set forth to accomplish. As a leader of the saxophone section, I know what it’s like to face failure, to overcome and turn it into success and to march on with confidence.
Initially, when I started practicing to audition, I did not think being accepted was a possibility. At the audition, this belief was reinforced further after hearing one other trombone in the warm-up room. His tone was beautiful and he surpassed my technical ability to play in every portion of the études; if even a few other players performed as well as him, there was no way for me to succeed. A month of painstakingly detailed practice felt worthless after hearing one trombone player warming up. I truly believed that I already lost.
Drums are highly influential in American Indian music. Different tribes have different traditions about their drums and how to play them. For larger dances or powwow type drums, the basic construction is very similar in most tribes. It is a wooden frame or a carved and hollowed out log, with rawhide buckskin or elk skin stretched out across the opening by sinew thongs. Percussion, especially drums and rattles, are often used to accompany and keep the rhythm steady for the singers, who use their native language or non-lexical vocables (nonsense syllables).
Advanced levels of my peers compared to me showed where the previous school had, nonetheless I demonstrated my dedication by following through with clarinet and joining marching band in 8th grade while mostly everyone in my class had quit. Auditioning for the All-County Honor’s Band my freshman year showed to be a wise decision and after being accepted, above the junior classmate who played clarinet with myself, I was awarded first chair in band. Continuing still with participating in solo and ensemble, and once again when I told my band director last year I wanted to play a Class B solo, he told me I wasn’t capable of it. Although, I played half of it that year for comments only, and took it this year for a rating only to earn a 2 (Excellent). One of my biggest accomplishments in band would have to be being accepted into the All Ohio State Fair Band, as one of the 40 out of the 52 that
In order to be drum major, I had to stop being a child with no rhythm and become the metronome of the band. My hands carried the beat and my face carried the emotion. Knowing when the band needed to play with more passion and how to show them in motion instead of words was one of the most important responsibilities of my position. I cued the entrances for the different sections and had to know where they would be on the field when that happened. Communicating non-verbally was a skill that I developed while being drum
