In the past, I have never known what to write down, so I wrote down nothing at all, or all the wrong stuff. Now I know to write down the main ideas, and then a couple supporting details. The last huge lesson I learned from College 101, was time management. I learned to use a planner and cut out time for classwork and studying. This will help me in highschool and college by ensuring that I get enough time to do my classwork and get good grades.
To be honest I tried to avoid the class at first time, even though we have to do writing in other classes. I felt I am not ready for writing class. However, I decided to enroll to this class because it will be very helpful to improve my writing, and the readings will be good references when I start writing my dissertation in the end of this program. It was good choice and I am glad I registered for this class.
To Write Well or to Not Write Well In the article The Writing Revolution by Peg Tyre, the far too common unfortunate example of a school system failing to equip its students with the proper writing skills necessary to be successful students is examined. While this failure is a phenomenon that ails students worldwide, I was fortunate enough to receive a high school education that excelled in this area and helped prepare me for college and beyond. The first method my school used was to assign mandatory writing assignments every week, which forced me to practice repeatedly and prefect the skill.
Through the past two semesters, I have learned a great deal about my writing skills. Before this class, the truly only wrote; filling my papers with the opinions I held myself. “Just writing” was my only option because that was all I had been taught. However, ever since I had attended GSW-1110 and GSW-1120, I have learned to adopt the formal writing style. Through the past two semesters, I have obtained many skills that will be useful to further my educational career, but there are skills that I, nevertheless, must improve on.
For example, my supervisors have given me compliments on documents and emails I have written.
We have reached the end of the semester unconsciously. During this semester, we’ve practiced and improved our writing by outlining, composing, editing, and revising. Throughout the process, I discovered my strengths and weaknesses, meanwhile, I tried hard to refine my writing skills. By now, we have focused on a few types of writing: rhetorical analysis, critical analysis, and argument. Remembered our first in-class essay was a rhetorical analysis of an argument.
During this semester, the peer review sessions have been most helpful, and especially helpful when paired with students who are more knowledgeable than I. Moreover, when going into these peer review sessions, most of the time I had a very rough draft of the assigned essay, but after the session, I knew exactly which steps I needed to take to improve my work. Additionally, when polishing my papers I would turn to the tutor before making the peer review suggested changes, but in retrospect, I now realize that I should make the suggested amendments first and then turn it into a tutor for
But if you were to ask me if the writing instruction I received in high school was effective in helping me prepare for the next step in my life, the answer would be no. The writing instruction I received in high school did not adequately prepare me for college. The first reason that I believe I wasn’t taught
Each essay I wrote took me several time to write, several drafts which show that I have improve every time I do the drafts to write a perfect masterpiece. I learned a lot of skills and techniques this quarter, which has helped me to improve and progress my writing skills for the future. I will remember the skills, techniques, and tips that professor gave us in this English class for my higher education. For example, all the time that I went to visit professor Sapozhnikov office hours to receive help on my out-of -class essays has helped me to improve, grow, and progress in my writing skills as a writer. Some of the significant changes I have made as I was progressing and growing were to develop a strong thesis to help support my claims as I write my essays, such as facts, observations, illustration, and examples.
I think without the knowledge from this class I would not have done as well as I did on that paper. That is why I am grateful for this class because it helps me write papers for others classes and do well. In the end, Dual English Comp has caused me a lot of stress but it has also opened my mind up to writing a successful college paper. I learned new things from writing a thesis to the correct apostrophe positions, to how to cite things correctly.
