Description of the situation at hand
Around 285 million people in this world are deprived of the gift of sight. It is hard to even imagine the plight of these individuals who find it extremely difficult to cope with simple everyday tasks. These people are quite dependent on others to fulfill their needs and many of them have to spend their lives in special care facilities. Currently, certain devices and tools are available which help make their lives slightly easier. These include; the walking stick (cane), which helps them navigate around and braille, which is a tactile writing and reading system used by people who are blind and low vision. While these tools do help ease their burden they have a lot of shortcomings.

People with complete blindness or low vision often have a difficult time self-navigating outside well-known environments. In fact, physical movement is one of the biggest challenges for blind people, explains World Access for the Blind. Traveling or simply walking down a crowded street may pose great difficulty. Blindness causes considerable social challenges, usually in relation to the activities in which a blind person cannot participate. All too frequently, blindness affects a person 's ability to perform many job duties, which severely limits their employment opportunities, explains the World Health Organization. This may not only affect a person 's finances, but also their self-esteem. A common device used for navigation such as a walking cane is simply not enough to tackle this issue. The main problem that we are hoping to find a solution to is the integration of key electronic mobility aids into a single device that will not break the bank of a person and would also be relatively user …show more content…
In addition, they will use their knowledge in chemistry to design efficient batteries which extend the usage of the device.
The industrial engineering contributions that will be implemented in this project is what type of material in the manufacturing process that would be most efficient to use as well holds the least costs. In addition using the methods, approaches, and skills learned to analyze and forecast the production systems of this product.
As for the Electrical Engineering discipline, electrical engineers will be responsible for the actual internal architecture of the device. Electrical engineers are responsible for the embedded motherboard to be used, and the installation of all the sensors to be used in the device itself. They will also use their knowledge of electronic circuitry to ensure that the right amount of voltages and currents are flowing through the resistors and other components to make sure that the device is safe and secure for daily
From an old Apache medical evacuation pilot, this man had been reduced to not much more than a helpless elderly man that spent his days reflecting of days long past. I started researching ways to help those with vision loss and found many different resources. I bought him a small telescopic cane with a rubber tip on the end and prepared to take it to him in attempts of support rather than forcing help on a determined macho man that would never ask for help. I said my usual hello and said that I had found a really neat gadget which could catch the attention of any tech savvy man. I explained how to use the sight assisting cane and soon after found him taking walks down the sidewalks outside of his home.
She wrote articles about special education, and mental health problems and solutions. She used her own experience to show that assistive technology is a good resource for students who face challenges in their daily life. Assistive technology has helped her become successful by allowing her to continue with her studies. She shows us that she didn’t give up and found alternatives in order to keep attending school.
In his article, “A Cure in Sight,” David Dobbs writes about the end of blindness. Early on in this piece of writing, Dobbs states that doctors, scientists, and other professionals should plan on finding options for curing blindness by the year of 2026. In the article, Dobbs discusses the several, potential methods of treatment, which may result in the cure of blindness. Right now, the treatments tested include gene-replacement, stem cells, and bionic implants.
Society perceives disable people as unable of doing the daily duty’s that a normal person could do. But in fact, they are wrong. Nancy Mairs describes how she was able to teach writing courses and teach medical students on how to give neurological examinations, making reader able to see that although , she was a “cripple” , she was able to perform some of the work of a professional person in the work- field. According to Mairs’essay “with only one usable hand, I have to select my clothing with care not so much for style as for ease of ingress and egress, and even so, dressing can be laborious”(3). Making it almost impossible for Mairs to dress up, she was to put on the necessary clothes that she needed to be covered by a piece of fabric clothing.
Today in the present, we as well have handicaps in our society, but as mentioned before, they are ‘hidden in plain sight’. An example
Invisible Man is the story of an educated black man that has been controlled by the white power structure, which is defined by the overarching level of power from the white man to the black man, throughout his life. The main character is nameless until the novel ends, which gives the novel a very sketchy and dehumanizing tone. Throughout the novel the narrator realizes that he isn’t seen by others as he sees himself which makes him “invisible.” Ellison uses brother Jack’s eye and sambo dolls to define the invisibility of the narrator, the stereotypes against the average black man, and realization that all things are not what they seem to be.
“Some can’t be that simple. I know I never could,” says Mrs. Freeman in the ending of the story, which means that perfection is difficult to achieve. However, in the book, Mrs. Freeman and other characters judge people around them just by their appearance. Flannery O’Connor’s “Good Country People” criticizes the people of the American South for their moral blindness and hypocrisy as well as people’s negative habits of stereotyping, being contradictory and cliché. The book delivers the message to be critical and to see things beyond the border.
The history of blindness came from a time where it was difficult to even keep someone around that was blind. People were giving away their children, abandon them, leaving them to die (Omvig 2017). As shocking as it is, of course everyone is scared of the unknown, this was not very common and seeing someone who was blind was a whole new thing. Once it became a very common
Disabled people who do manage to make their way into the work force tend to encounter numerous disadvantages such as advancement and on average earn around one quarter of the income of their able bodied counterparts (Barnes, Mercer & Shakespeare 1999, p.110). In addition, the majority of well paid, high skilled, and rewarding positions are commonly taken by non-disabled people (Barnes, Mercer & Shakespeare 1999, p.111). It is possible that employers are not interested or unmotivated to make possible changes or allowance for physically disabled people within their organization
Appearance can be misleading, the obvious things we see are not always how things are in real. In Oedipus the King, Sophocle exposes the trick of nature which is "what we see is not what is intended to be" and which turned to be a situational irony in the play, Oedipus the king. Blindness is not only apply to people who are blind.
will sponsor the research of Jeff Dahn till the issues are resolved. Mr. Dahn will focus on expanding the capacity of voltage in batteries without damaging their longevity and reducing the cost of materials. Based on the chief technologist in Tesla Motors Mr. Straubel’s expectation energy density of the batteries and cruising range of electric vehicles need to be increased, thereby battery cost and weight need to be reduced in order to cut the price for Tesla car further model and to meet a sales target of a cumulative one million vehicles by 2020. “In addition to advances in chemistry, Tesla Motors is aiming to reduce its battery costs by bringing in-house the suppliers and processing of lithium, nickel cobalt and graphite. We are making constant progress on all that.
Accessibility is a concept that essentially applies to the customization of products, services, appliances and environments in a way that enables them to be used by people who have various types of disabilities. Effectively speaking, these products and services are designed in such a manner that enables people with special needs to gain both ‘direct’ as well as ‘indirect’ access to them. At the same time, the benefits of accessibility also extend to a wider category of individuals such as senior citizens and medical patients. Assistive technology is a term that is closely associated with the concept of accessibility. For instance, the application of assistive technology is what makes electronic equipment such as computer screen readers accessible to all categories of end users, including those with disabilities or special needs.
Assistive technology can help disabled students by practicing different methods of assistive technology by having portable devices that help a child read and write. Therefore, students who have a hard time planning papers and using high vocabulary words can use assistive technology. Celebray palsy is a disorder that affects muscle control. This causes for the child to not be able to write because they are not able to move and control movements. For example, students that have Celebray palsy and muscular dystrophy are not able to hold a pencil because they face weakness in their skeletal muscles.
Disability is defined by World Health Organisation as “an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. Impairment is a problem in body function or structure; an activity limitation is a difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action; while a participation restriction is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations”. Disability remains a major challenge throughout the world with disabled people facing hostile socioeconomic outcomes than people without disabilities, such as less education, worse health outcomes, less employment, and higher poverty rates (1). Physical disability is defined as: “an acquired or congenital physical and/or motor impairment
Disabled people are people who have mental or physical limitation so they depend on someone to support them in doing their daily life needs and jobs. Although disabled people are a minority and they are normally ignored, they are still a part of the society. The statistics show that the proportion of disabled people in the world rose from 10 percent in the seventies of the last century to 15 percent so far. The number of handicapped exceeds a billion people all over the world, occupied about 15 percent of the world's population, as a result of an aging population and the increase in chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, blood and psychological diseases that are related with disabilities and impairments. Every five seconds someone
