Social Classes have been used in many countries, in dystopian books, and in history. They are called by many names, but they all have similar jobs which separates into these social classes. In the Brave New World, Aldous Huxley created a caste system with Greek alphabet names. This caste system consists of Alphas being the Upper class, Betas being the Middle class, Gammas being the Working class, and Deltas and Epsilons being the Working Poor class or Lower class. In Brave New World, the caste system is very similar to society in the United States, which separates Americans into different social classes. would do. During John’s visit to the factory of the Electrical Equipment Corporation, he sees the the Gammas working, “The fifty-six four-spindle chucking and turning machines were being manipulated by fifty-six aquiline and ginger Gammas,” (Huxley, 159). One of the Gammas jobs are being factory workers in their society. They do not share the same pleasures which the Alphas and Betas do, they are identical twins who do not really hold any influence. Even though Gammas hold no influence, they still do their jobs and listen to the Betas and Alphas. If the Gammas were put into American society, they would fit right into the working class, Working Class generally work in blue-collar jobs such as factory work, construction, restaurant serving, and less skilled clerical positions,” (Sociology). The working class in American society are those who get their hands dirty in their jobs, they do not work in offices. They mostly work in factories, in construction, and get their clothes dirty almost every day. You can say the same for the Gammas in Brave New World, they do the jobs that get their hands and clothes dirty everyday. This is why the Gammas would be the working class of Brave New World, while they do not do all the jobs that the working class in American society have. The Gammas are not the only ones who are part of the working class, the Deltas and Epsilons are also part of them and not …show more content…
In Aldous Huxley caste system, he has separated the people into four different social classes. The first one being the upper class or the Alphas, they take over the high ranking jobs in their civilization and hold the most influence. The second one being the middle class or the Betas, they take over jobs like being nurses and control the final destination of the new embryos. But they do still hold some influence and have the same privileges as the Alphas. The third social class is the working class or Gammas, they do all the jobs that involve working in factories building the helicopters and other goods for the rest of society. Gammas mostly hold less influence in Brave New World. The final social class is made up as the working class and working poor, they are the Deltas and Epsilons. Both of these caste members are construction workers and do other jobs like being vacuum cleaners. They hold no influence in their society, only following what they are being told to do. Still, all social classes and caste members play important roles in their civilization. They all support each other and need the other to continue their normal lives. What would you think of a world where there is no social classes separating the people from each other, but everyone is equal to each other? If everyone was equal to
Equality. Opportunity. Prosperity. The American Dream paints a vision in which each of these ideals are ever present and available to all individuals inside the vast border of the nation. The notion is that every individual can, through concentrated efforts and dedication, improve their own socioeconomic class and climb up the hierarchy.
The lower social class goes through many life challenges
A democracy is a form of government that is ruled by the people and controlled by the people. For example, here in the United states which is a democracy, everyone is allowed to vote and have land. Also, everyone is allowed to practice a religion of their choice. Athens was truly democratic because everyone had the equal justice, people were voted into office, and one’s social class did not determine what a person could become.
The first social class is called the lower class. In the lower class, there are two levels; working poor and underclass. The people in the lower class are right above poverty and have trouble being able to hold their own. In the working poor section of the class, the people in it are in the higher part of the lower class.
Throughout the novel, it is shown that humans can be looked at differently because of their society and class. The fact that Socs have a very big advantage over the
You are more likely to see the upper class define themselves proudly rather than people of a lower class. The only thing that hasn’t been discussed is the fact that the opportunities given to the higher social classes use that to their advantage. David Brooks argues in his piece “How We Are Ruining America” that the upper-middle class parents’ hinder the same educational opportunities of children of a lower social class because upper-middle class parents make it their priority to invest in their children’s education. Upper-middle class parents want to make sure their kids maintain their status and do not fall
In Brave New World the class system is made up of five classes with each class being in control of one thing but all are considered under the alphas and Directors. Each director is basically a dictator in control of all things with in a section of where they are located. Each class however is already predetermined by birth. Each group is given a certain drug or alcohol to set a being into the predetermined class. This is possible because natural birth is prohibited and frowned upon, so the government can do what they please with the children.
Social class is what gets you where you are today. You could be in the Low Class to the point where you get treated or judged poorly or you could maybe be in the higher class where you get treated and judged a little bit on the better side. You could even be in the middle class which is in between the good and the worst. The crucible doesn’t really show the characters different social class but it does show how they are being judged just because they are a witch or a bad person. People shouldn't be judged just by what class they are
Hall in an article, Literary and Cultural Theory, “...methodologies emphasize issues gender, sexuality, and/or race,” (Hall 73). Hall describes that Marxism is the idea where “...society is stratified into three primary classes.- the Aristocracy, the Bourgeoisie, and the Proletariat…”(Hall 74). Each of these three social classes has a different view of everything and a different set of interests. In the novel, Brave New World, Huxley splits the society into five different groups, the Alphas, Betas, Deltas, Gammas and the Epsilon’s, but are put into three categories. For example, The Aristocracy are the Alphas, the middle class or the Bourgeoisie are Betas, Deltas, Gammas and the poor workers or the are the Proletarians are mainly Epsilons.
The movie also shows us what happens in this world when people see others as less than themselves. As with the example of Judy defending her friend against the fox. She is scratched by him but in the end still does not let her natural instincts of fear overpower her dreams. Judy is classified as the weakest link throughout the movie, but continues to prove herself against the odds. The examples of social classes throughout the movie I think are also very close to what our social classes look like today.
From eight to ninety-six buds, and every bud will grow into a perfectly formed embryo, and every embryo into a full-sized adult. Making ninety-six human beings grow where only one grew before.” (Director 7). Another attempt to make a stable society is implementing a caste system where “everyone belongs to everyone”. The caste system in Brave New World worked so effectively that the different castes rarely interacted with each other, and when they did there was a palpable animosity towards the persons of another caste.
I believe social classes have defined our society in many ways. In America, they separate people into three different classes: the upper class, middle class, and the lower or working class. Based on wealth and various occupations, social classes determine the population’s status in society. Social classes today define individuals and influence their actions. Although people born in a certain class may choose to stay there, they also have the choice of leaving.
There are four social classes: upper class, middle class, working class and under class. An example of people who may be discriminated against because of their social class would be someone who is poor. Individuals who are poor, under class and some working class, in school could be called ‘scruffy’ by their peers because they might not be able to afford new clothes. This could lead to teachers discriminating and treating students differently. This could show overt and covert discrimination in a health and social care setting.
This aspect of the social class system primarily represents the class system, yet subliminally declares the system to be backwards and rather
Therefore, in a stratified society, the individual’s opportunities are always determined by his or her social class. In this essay, I will be arguing that even though mobility exists in the social class system, the opportunity to change status is relatively open for everyone but the distribution of opportunities among the members of a social class is not relatively equal to all. I will demonstrate this point by showing how participation of an individual in a specific social class will decide the opportunities in terms of attaining education and achieving a well-paid job. Education has a significant role in promoting social mobility; it enables people to acquire knowledge and certain skills in order to promote their social status. Nowadays, people believe that societies are based on meritocratic
