Perhaps you know a person who, at some point in her life, became so obsessed with the idea of defeating another person for the sake of earning that bragging rights and feeling a sense of fulfillment for being better than that person. It is time to speak the truth about social competition, and the truth is this. Social competition is not just a healthy obsession with being the better person, or a healthy fear of failure that may encourage one to strive for success. We have had countless encounters with different people who have experienced bullying, or have been bullies themselves. We, ourselves, have been a victim of social competition among circle of friends, a class, or a whole batch. We have seen how people react to certain situations, and how they act to save their precious social standing, because if there is anything everyone would agree on, that is: no one wants to be a laughingstock, most especially when you’re not even trying to crack a joke. However, we fail to realize that we do this because we lack attention. In the end, what we actually are fighting for is attention. We may not all be outwardly conceited, but everyone wants to be noticed. Out of billions of people in the world, we want ourselves to be among those people who matters because of the fact that they seem relevant and loved. One is not “most beautiful” without her adorers, one is not “most intelligent” without other people to compare her to. We are not someone without other people acknowledging our existence. We struggle to be deserving of attention. We struggle to avoid being among the lowest tier in our imaginary social hierarchy. That is our daily burden: not just in teenagers, even adults plod on the path of success by trying to beat the employee of the month.
