Did you know 50 percent of marriages in the US end up in divorce? That means five out of ten marriages are doomed to failed, maybe leaving a broken child and with an unhappy childhood to go through. According to International Center for Research on Woman “150 million girls will be married before their 18th birthday over the next decade. That is an average of 15 million girls each year” probably most of these girls will not have the chance to finish their studies, affecting the social development of the society. Early marriages are one of the main reasons about this social problem. They are a risky weapon which people get confused believing that marriage may be the solution, because of an unwanted pregnancy, cultural hurdles or just to raise …show more content…
Different cultural traditions are based on gender discrimination where men are more important than women, this brings many consequences one of them is early marriage for beneficial reasons between families, marriage is usually made without the consent of the women. This always manifests itself in the form of domestic violence and marital rape. According to UNICEF a united nations program that provide long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in development countries, said that “Women who married younger are more likely to be beaten or threatened, and more likely to believe that a husband might sometimes be justified in beating his wife”. It is detrimental for the family and society that a child grows in an environment of fights and discussion where he can see how his mother is beaten. This will bring harmful consequences for the society because we will be surrounded between young people who are potential criminals because they grew up without the education of their …show more content…
Dr. Justin Deeter, a senior pastor at Forest Hill Baptist in North Carolina said that “it is not a strange sighting today to see 25 or 26-years-old-men living at home with mom and dad, drinking red bull, and playing X-box all day. Adolescence is no longer just during the teen years but continues into the 20s and early 30s”. It is commonly though among society that marriage encourages couples to grow up, specially the man because now he becomes responsible to provide all the resources that the family need. Another point that people say to justify early marriage is that those who are sexually active before marriage are more likely to divorce, according to a study made by Dr. Kane of the university of Maryland “A study found that non virgin brides increase their odds of divorce by about 60%”. Early marriage is a good reason to avoid further divorce and establish the unity of the family. Nevertheless this study is not entirely true because in these times great part of women who get married on these days are not virgin, despite this fact it can be seen that many couples are successful on their marriages, so the fact of age is not an issue for a marriage as long as the couple is mature and take the right decisions. Also, the fact that you live with your parents at a certain age does not signify that you will be an unsuccessful person who never is going to get
Domestic violence has attracted much attention of the sociologists in India since the decades of 1980s. Violence affects the lives of millions of women, worldwide, in all socio- economic and educational classes. It cuts across cultural and religious barriers, impending the right of women to participate fully in society. Domestic violence occurs in all cultures; people of all societies and classes. In earlier times, violence against women was a result of the prevalent atmosphere of ignorance and feudalism.
In this reading, Andrew J. Cherlin talks about the changes in American marriage, their causes and how the transformation of marriage is likely to affect American children. According to Cherlin the changes are: 1. Great demographic changes of the past century 2. Changes in age at marriage. (In the past people were getting married at early age
However, today there is growing awareness of how harmful they can be, especially for young women. Arranged marriages lack the element of love and mutual consent, leading to a lack of normalcy for young women. This part of my essay will talk about the dangers of arranged marriages for young women. Firstly, arranged marriages restrict young women’s freedom of choice. In many cases, young women are forced into marriages against their will, often for the sake of financial gain or to maintain social status.
Also, once girls grow up they are forced to marry young and to do whatever their husbands say, even if he is abusive. According to KaYing Yang this serious issue that often goes unknown and unmentioned. The message of KaYing Yang’s lecture affects me personally because I am a female. Although I don’t live according to an incredibly sexist culture, I still see the importance of helping other women overcome sexual injustices.
To further justify this point, Thomas (2013) articulates, “Taking stock of…spiritual weakness, early marriage seemed like the wise thing to do” (p. 89). Although I do understand the argument he wishes to convey, I do not necessarily agree that young marriage is a wise decision. Pursing marriage at a young age allots problems to arise early into the relationship. The couple may not be ready to pursue marriage in various other capacities outside of strong sexual desire. Responsibility to admit weakness is commendable, however, I believe further self-control and wise counsel should be addressed primarily before jumping into marriage.
In India almost all weddings are arranged by parents; As Nanda mentions, “I must let my parents choose a boy for me because here we have a chance to enjoy our life and let our parents to do this work and warring for us” (479), a quote from an educated Indian girl. But in the US, American parents rarely arrange the marriage their children. Nanda compares and contrasts
This proposes that there is a clear bias in the way we nurture girls to be more refined than boys, and encourage them to be more attentive on domestic aspects… basically everything society deems make “a good wife”. Boys are not taught to be good “house-husbands” and marry well, in fact they are taught the complete opposite. They are first and foremost projected to aim for personal success. If a man were to marry and start a family, it is often understood as being a respective choice he makes for additional gratification, but girls learn early on that marriage is not merely a goal, it’s as if it were an obligation; an unmarried man does not magnetize the same societal disgrace as an unmarried
Well, that is a false statement. The average age for a man to get married is twenty nine years old and the average age for a woman to get married is at twenty six. At the age of 14 and up most teens have no idea how to take care of themselves. Women that marry under the age of 18 are most likely to go into poverty because they drop out of school and, therefore, lack the knowledge of how to meet the family needs. Did you know about fifteen million girls are married before the age of eighteen each year?

A. An article from The New York Times titled “Should Couples Live Together Before Marriage?” describe that pre-marital cohabitation results from the thinking that 1. Couples will have a “test drive” of the marriage – the problem with this is that the couple goes into the relationship thinking that if it doesn’t work out it can easily be ended rather than working at it to make it successful. 2. They will get used to sharing space with their partner and have a more equal division of household labor. 3.
Oedipus the King is one of the most ironic plays ever written. Sophocles, the author, is a famous philosopher of the ancient times The Play is about Oedipus, the king of Thebes, who kills his father and marries his mother. An oracle warned Laius, the king of Thebes prior to Oedipus, that his son would murder him. Accordingly, when his wife, Jocasta, had a son, he exposed the baby by first pinning his ankles together. The infant, who was adopted by King Polybus of Corinth and his wife was then brought up as their very own.
Human Sexuality Diane Dyche Sociology 21 # 22071 The top three things in my life that have most influence my viewpoints about sex and sexuality are my family, peers, and tv and movies. My family influenced my viewpoints on sex and sexuality because that is usually what I grew up listening to. My family was very open about a person’s sexuality and sex while growing up. They talked about gender roles, sexuality, and even sex.
This is something that concerns every girl and women around regions, nations, and countries. In Mexico, excessive murders, disappearance, and rape have been tremendous problems for ten years and still going (The Facts: Gender Inequality and Violence Against Women and Girls Around the World, Paragraph 5). In South Asia, dowry death murders thousands of women each year, and honor killings continue to rise drastically in many Mediterranean and Gulf countries (The Facts: Gender Inequality and Violence Against Women and Girls Around the World, Paragraph 8). Honor killings caused 500 women to die each year, 47% were raped then killed, and around 400 were beaten and/or tortured (The Facts: Gender Inequality and Violence Against Women and Girls Around the World, Paragraph 9-11). This is also reasons why physical and sexual abuse among females is increasing by the second all around the world.
Is there really a need to be married anymore? Does marriage actually benefit your relationship, or is it an outdated institution that we’ll be better off without? In this speech, I’ll convince you that marriage is a thing of the past, and that society’s views on marriage have changed enough in the past decade that marriage really isn’t necessary anymore. One of the main purposes of marriage is to maintain a permanent relationship, but nowadays marriage doesn’t lead to a permanent relationship due to the increase of divorce rates.
