SOCIAL COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS Submitted to: Professor Manoj Anand Submitted By: Garima Astha (PGP30075) INTRODUCTION Any investment in a project is undertaken only after doing a rigorous cost-benefit analysis. The focus has generally been on the financial aspects. But increasingly the focus is shifting towards the social aspects. Social Cost Benefit Analysis (SCBA) or Economic Analysis (EA) is a project appraisal tool for comparing alternatives to evaluate whether a proposed project will add benefit or cost to the society. For example, while constructing a new factory, an in depth analysis of financial and social costs (like pollution, displacement of residents, etc.) should also be considered. SCBA helps by attaching a price to all the effects …show more content…
Goods/services are tradable when there are no trade barriers or when they are traded within these barriers. • Sources of Shadow Pricing-Depending on the impact of the project on national economy, there are three sources of shadow pricing as described in the table Impact on National Economy Sources of Shadow Pricing From production of output angle From consumption on input angle Increase total consumption in the economy Decrease consumption in the rest of the economy Consumer’s willingness to pay Decrease production in other parts of the economy Increase production within the economy Cost of Production Decrease imports or increase exports Increase imports or decrease exports Foreign Exchange Value (Border Price) • Taxes- Taxes should be excluded if the project augments domestic production and for fully traded goods. If project uses non-tradable inputs, taxes should be included. • Consumer Willingness to Pay (CWP)-What a consumer wants to spend for a product or service. The difference between CWP and actual payment is called consumer surplus. APPROACHES TO …show more content…
4. Two million man days of unskilled labor for which the project committee decided to pay a daily wage of Tk. 100. (Additional Information: The shadow price of unskilled labor is 80 Tk. Per day) 5. 5. Skilled labor costing Tk. 5 crore. ( However, this cost reflects what others are willing to pay for the skilled labor) 6. Operating & Maintenance cost of the project will be Tk. 7.5 crore annually (However, the operating cost should be Tk. 6.5 crore from social view point) 7. 0.5 million acres of land will be irrigated. The Government will charge the water levy at Tk. 150 for per acre. (Additional Information: The value of additional output per acre due to the irrigation will be Tk. 500 per acre). 8. 100 million units of electricity will be generated for domestic use. The electricity tariff will be charged at Tk. 1 per unit. (Additional Information: The consumers are willing to pay Tk. 1.5 for per unit of electricity). 9. Flood damages can be saved by Tk. 2 crore annually. However, the Government will not able to collect anything for this. 10. The project appoints 1,000 laborers at a wage rate of Tk. 150 per day. These workers were ready to work for a daily wage of Tk.
The U.S Government has social welfare systems that supports lower class in need. From home providing programs like “Welfare” and “Section 8 housing” to food providing programs like “Food Stamps” and “WIC “( Women, Infants, and Children ). The U.S government economy has declined immensely over the years resulting in a high unemployment rate and very high market pricing. Therefor, theres a very large group of people who are struggling financially, in need of food or shelter, cant find a job, income cant support their kids, etc .. Also there is an additional group of people mainly immigrants who simply struggle to speak the language and can’t really find there place in this country.
Also workers received minimal amount of pay -usually 8-10 dollars a week, with women and children receiving
For instance, in order to reduce economic risks, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris opted to hire bosses whom they paid according to the shirtwaist’s production. Simultaneously, the bosses hired workers, mainly immigrant young women, to actually produce the shirtwaists, supervised their work, and paid them from the amount they received from the owners. Since, the bosses decided the wages of employees for their own profit, they minimize labor costs. The shirtwaist’ prices varied from $2 to hundreds of dollars, according to the fabric and design, nonetheless some women could not afford them despite they worked hard to fabricate them.
John Steinbeck was an author who wrote 27 different books. He wrote a book in 1929 and it was his first successful one. The name of the first book he made was Cup of Gold. As a young man John Steinbeck worked with his father at a food and grain store.
As per that subsequent disaster, floods can now be prevented by forming a management committee set to prevent that from happenings in every county, they say prevention is better than cure and so the government is coming up with measures to control floods. This is done by sensitizing people who live on lower grounds to move to higher grounds to prevent landslides, digging dykes and also educating citizens on disaster
If her goal is to maximize the amount of money she can make each week, how many hours will she work at the bookstore? Im going to say 4 Hours due to the fact that it pays her 9 dollars an hour. Pham will clearly choose the books store because as I explained the amount they are paying her is better than the others and as long as it stays at that amount she will choose to work at that location as long as she can. But if another job likes her performance and bump up her pay she would most likely go work there until she meets her time crunch.
In Document B the women in the okaya plant got about 8 hours of free time since they worked from 4:30 in the morning to 7:30 at night. The eight hours they did get would have to be used to sleep. The eight hours of free time is only if the plant was not busy if it was busy they would get only 6 hours since work was from 4:30 am to 10:00 pm. Than for every two weeks the workers worked they got only 1 holiday day off. Also in japan there were no weekends so these people would work everyday till a holiday arrived.
If You Have Medicare, Then It Is Important To Understand What It Does And Does Not Cover Prescription drug coverage for seniors was implemented as a part of Medicare in 2004. During those 15 hours of hard labor, the workers would only receive 40 minutes in total for breakfast, lunch, and an extra break time” (Doc B). Waking up early in the day wasn’t their only hardship. They also had to work very hard, but only received a little for their work. These Japanese worker’s daily wage was also another cost.
Their pay was 1/10 of what normal laborers were paid for doing the same kind of task
Socialized medicine is a form of medical insurance that is available to all lawful citizens that the government covers. Throughout the United States 21.3% of the population receive benefits from the government due to their financial situation. Consequently, such benefits are not available for all citizens and may be difficult to qualify for. Moreover, Government-run programs are often cheaper, more administratively efficient, and even of superior quality than privately-run programs at the national level. If the United States began offering socialized medicine, there would be a slight rise in taxes in order to cover the 82 million dollars in costs.
e. How would you gauge the project’s success? Could success be measured? If so, when? Ans.
Based on our calculations in Appendix 1. at the first stage support costs were allocated to two existing departments, i.e. Machining and Assembly, based on direct labor hours. Therefore total amount of costs assigned to Machining department is $472.000,00 and to Assembly department is $248.000,00. At the second stage total costs from both departments were distributed to products (Regular and Deluxe). Referring to our calculations in Appendix 1.
Direct labor which is a human resource will be recalculated on the basis of sales of 3 million bikes. It may happen to produce 1 million products, they require 50000 employees but to produce 3 million products they require 200000 employees and to be on safer size, 10% extra labor will be recruited which will give a total of 220000 employees. Therefore it is clearly understood that the company can prepare their Labor Requirement budget directly from the sales budget. The same concept will apply to overhead and capital expenditures because overheads are directly proportional to the production and if the sales are high, product will automatically are high. Similarly quantity requirement will lead to the requirement of machines.
Unexpected impact Follow-up sometimes reveals unexpected impacts related to a project. Unexpected impacts are ones which were not anticipated or dealt with in the EIR. They may be positive or negative; but because they are unexpected there are unlikely to be mitigation measures in place to deal with them (Lawrence, 2003). The follow-up process therefore needs to be adaptive enough to cope with this The purpose of an EIA is to present information, so that it can inform the decision-making process (Canter, 1996).
