The Role Of Social Norms In Kyrgyz Society
Social norms constitute a very significant part of regulation and functioning of
community. They create certain patterns and set of rules for human behavior. They are
conditioned by the complexity of social interactions. Social norms are a product of the
culture. They dictate an individual and social behavior. In other words, these norms tell
people what should they do. Social norms become guidelines for people; and they truly
believe that this is how it should be. For different situations people have different norms on
how to behave. For instance, it is common to respect the elderly, go to school, take a shower
at least once a week and so on. However, with the fact that they provide a framework for

These rules are not written or legally approved. They
are dictated by the majority. In order to be more specific in this paper it is necessary to
concentrate on a local society.
One of the problems in Kyrgyz society is gender discrimination. The social system of
Kyrgyz society is based on patriarchal system and this leads to limiting women. With a flow
of history, the system of patriarchal in almost all places in the world it has come to be that
male is a main character in the society. The patriarchal system has been dominating for many
years. Since twentieth century feminism is becoming more popular. Feminism, in general is
the movement against patriarchal system. In the first half of twentieth century in United
States, social norms have been mostly patriarchal, for example most of workplaces has been
occupied by the male part of society, while the females had to sit at home and watch
