This segregated America to this day and made it impossible to invest in the future of African-American neighbourhoods. Property taxes fund schools, which means that families who live in nice neighbourhoods - ones they could afford because of government backed home loans - get a better education. Better education means more opportunities, more resources and better jobs. The lack of educational opportunities meant that many African-Americans were relegated to low-wage manual work widening the wealth disparity that already existed. Part of being white is the privilege to reject a political consciousness.
Income inequality and segregation has and will have a dramatic effect on upward social mobility and opportunity equality for kids. More families live in uniformly affluent neighborhoods or in uniformly poor neighborhoods and fewer of them live in mixed or moderate-income neighborhoods. Even when poor and wealthier schoolchildren live in the same school district, they are increasingly likely to attend separate and unequal schools (Curtis, 2017). Lower-income kids need not only talk but also all the help that they can get to break out of the cycle of opportunity inequality that victimizes them in this day and age. Over the past several decades an “opportunity gap” has grown between kids from “have” and “have not” backgrounds.
In the United States today there is a significant number of kids who attend public schools, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but these schools are facing a number of problems that bring downfalls to the overall effectiveness of the system. In the United States the average public school student will have a low standardized test score. This can be linked to the curriculum being taught and how it impacts the way students are learning and how effectively they’re really learning that material. In many situations public school students come from a lower income household, this is affecting those students’ chances of receiving a high-school diploma. In addition to not receiving a diploma it also hurts their chances of furthering their education at a university or trade school.
Another cause of poverty and lack of income is whether or not children are American citizens. “..immigrants from Asia had a poverty rate of 12.8 percent while 21.9 percent of Latin American immigrants were poor.” It is obvious that there is a big difference in poverty between children who were born in the U.S versus children who were born outside of the U.S. This could be due to the fact that it is harder for people who were born outside of the U.S, immigrants, to time find a job. “Among the children of immigrants, poverty rates in 1999 varied from a low of 9.5 percent among non-Hispanic whites to 32.9 percent among Mexicans.”
English philosopher, mathematician, and writer. People who lack education are the people who are not been taught. The cause of this is that the majority of the people are poor. There are even people who stop their children to go to schools because they want them to work, again the issue here is money. They want them to work and not be educated.
There are many reasons that cause child labor: Poverty and unemployment levels are high – As you see, the most of employed children work in less developed countries by economy. In such countries poor families and children may rely upon child labor in order to improve their chances of attaining basic necessities. According to U.N statistics more than one-fourth of the people around the world live in poverty that is caused by the high unemployment levels. Free education is limited – U.N estimated that approximately 75 million children were not attending school. The education for the whole world’s children costs 10-30 Billion dollars that is 0.7% - 2% of the annual cost of global military spending.
If this goes on, the under-privileged children would grow up beneath the privilege children in all aspects of their lives. For example, in America, the dropout rates for under-privileged children age 16-24 are seven times more than those privileged children age 16-24. This means that more than 85% of school dropouts in America
The Issue The concept of acculturation has been researched by the impact on health status and behaviors of immigrants. As a process, acculturation is present on multiple levels concerning an individual, one of which is the individual’s health. The acquisition of cultural elements of the dominant society, whether it be lifestyle practices, nutritional habits, or societal values is the defining way in which acculturation can affect health.1 The US Census Bureau has predicted that Latinos will account for a quarter of the nation’s population by 2050.2 In consideration to health, the Latino population faces various health disparities that set them apart from individuals residing in the US.
The most important of the vast privileges today’s generation of America has in my opinion are freedom and choice. Of course none of these would’ve been possible without blood, sweat, and tears from our soldiers. America has more than enough gifts to offer for everyone ranging from rich to poor and good to bad. Schools are great and have many advantages that other countries lack. Our veterans have given us everything we need and more so the vast majority of us can be successful.
What makes people unequal to others in their mind? Many think others are unequal because they are simply different from them. The possibilities on being different from another person are almost infinite, but most often, and not limited to, are race, religion, gender, sexuality, or just being an outcast. Looking at just the United States, it is a huge melting pot based on immigration throughout history. Being an immense melting pot is a blessing and a curse; while it creates cultural diversity, it also creates discrimination, which America is notoriously known for.
The African-Americans wanted to migrate North because the social conditions were difficult to live with in the South. The prejudice toward African-Americans in the South was too great to be ignored. The African-Americans wanted to be seen as equal and they knew that the wait for social equality in the South would take too long. Moving to the North not only gave the possibility of social equality, but there were also more job opportunities and the Northerners did not view African-Americans the way Southerners did. African-Americans were presented with “better educational opportunities and greater personal freedom [in the North]” (Crew 36).
The term “American dream” was coined by renowned writer and historian, James Truslow Adams, who considered America as a place where life will be better and richer. Since then, the United States of America has been considered as the land of equal opportunities and growth. However, the changes in the social and economic status of the population indicates that there is existence of social disparity in our society. Social inequality can be defined as the existence of an unequal distribution of various resources and opportunities among the social groups in a population. While the United States of America trys to be a pioneer nation in promoting social equality, the leading research, based on various parameters and asset groups indicate that the
