(Unique title) What makes a family a family? Families are all different. Having a family does not always include having both a mother and father. Sometimes having a family is a group of coworkers or friends from school.
Family. A lot of people cringe at the word because of the embarrassment that can come with it. Family means a support system that will follow through for you when you need it. A group of people, related or otherwise, who knows exactly what to do to push your buttons or make you feel better. In the book, Speak, Melinda grows up in a, seemingly normal, yet dysfunctional setting.
Family may not seem like a huge deal to some people and some generations, but there is not one simple definition of what family is. One can say that a family is a group of people that share a certain bond. During slavery, family meant everything, and family is all that the slaves had, unless their masters separated them because they knew family meant the world to the slaves. In the narrative of the life of Olaudah Equiano, Equiano’s bond with his sister was exceedingly cherished. In the narrative of Harriet Jacobs, Jacobs’ children was all she had.
Race, class, and culture can contributes to one belonging or isolation in society. Many people go through this everyday. Its like judging someone on what you think of them. It isn’t fair, but thats how the world is. John judged because of culture, Tituba judged because of race, and Ronald judged because of class.

Institutional racism is alive and thriving in modern-day America. There is nothing extreme in this statement. African-Americans have been exploited through segregation and slavery for centuries. And today they are still disproportionately threatened, incarcerated, and killed by police in the streets. To understand the sheer size and intricacy of systemic oppression in it`s entirety is nearly impossible and inevitable fruitless.
America has been around for 238 years, providing opportunity for anyone who is willing to grab it. Has America really provided a dream or is it all a false image created by the government to lure immigrants so we can mock them? Our history shows that we haven’t provided an American dream, we provided an American nightmare. It’s all about building a future, but how are you supposed to build a future if you’re social status and race fail you?
Adhering to all of the conceptual stances does not mean that race, class, and gender oppression are interchangeable. For example, whereas race, class, and gender oppression operate on the social structural level of institutions, gender oppression seems better able to annex the basic power of the erotic and intrude in personal relationships via family dynamics and within individual consciousness. This may be because racial oppression has fostered historically concrete communities among African-Americans and other racial/ethnic groups. These communities have stimulated cultures of resistance. While these communities segregate Blacks from whites, they simultaneously provide counter-institutional buffers that subordinate groups such as African-Americans
Family is somebody who matters to you, cares for you, and loves you. Blood relation does not matter; Jamie is family to me. Jamie is a very wonderful man who I met almost six years ago. When we first met, he seems so tall compared to me.

Family is characterized with common aspects such as parents, grandparents, and siblings but there are so many other ways to distinct family. The word family is commonly defined as a group of individuals that have the same ancestors, and gather for holidays and other special events. This particular definition is true in so many ways, but everyone goes through life with situations that are brought up that bring together or break apart families. When I think about the word family and my experiences I have gone through and I would consider family to have crazy moments, lots of laughter, and unconditional love. Family to me is getting everyone together and having a good time and acting crazy with your loved ones, making memories.
“Family” is a hard word to create a concrete definition for. If one were to ask three random people on the street, it is likely they will receive three completely different answers to defining a family. The textbook definition of family according to the etymology dictionary is: “Origin in early 15c. “servants of a household” from Latin familia “family servants, domestics collectively, the servants in a household.” The traditional dictionary describes family in a more narrow fashion stating, “a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not.”
