Caste and class have been a determining factor of a person’s status, place and position in the social hierarchy from the ancient Vedic times, to the modern era. The caste system, which was said to be introduced in ancient period to regulate and discipline the society and its smooth functioning, has paved way to discrimination and degradation. The four Varnas: Brahmin, Kshtriya, Vaishya and Shudra not only provided social stratification in a hierarchical manner but also assigned people an identity by their work and limited their social mobility. Dr. B.R.Ambedkar said that “caste system is not merely division of labourers- which is quite different from division of labour – it is a hierarchy in which the divisions of labourers’ are graded one above the other.”

Article 17 of Indian Constitution abolishes “untouchability,” forbids its practice in any form and makes “the enforcement of any disability arising out of ‘untouchability’ a punishable offence.” Article 15 of the constitution forbids discrimination on the basis of caste. The First Amendment of the constitution permits the state to make special provisions “for the advancement of any socially and educationally backward classes of citizens or for the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.” But Mistry’s narrative shows a world, “where the liabilities of untouchability prevail despite the constitution, and the proclaimed class warfare of Marxist parties and other of political rhetoric, established power entrenches itself by neutering the democratic process.” (D’Cruz,
For centuries, the caste system dictated almost every aspect of Hindu life. The caste would eventually split up into upper and lower classes, causing a segregation between both communities. There have been many attempts to get rid of the system, but unfortunately it is still being used in India today. In Document 3, the excerpt from the Mahabharata states “Enjoy the pleasure bestowed on you, and bear the pain on you.” Referring to the caste system, this statement describes the pleasures or the pain that a Hindu receives in their lifetime.
The Caste System developed by the Spanish had affected all features of their life, such as their economy and taxation. The Spanish and its Church got more of the tax and payments from the lower classes. There was no equality as the lower class were mistreated. The Caste System was used mainly for social control and was able to decide where a person 's place in society was.
The caste system holds the view that a person's caste influences their decision-making regarding marriage, employment, education, etc. Despite the fact that it is still in use today, the caste system underwent some major changes over time in India. In today’s time, according to Pew Research center they stated how in India, caste segregation is still widely practiced. For instance, a huge percentage of Brahmins said they would not accept a member of a scheduled caste as a neighbor. However, the majority of Indians believe that caste discrimination is not a major issue in the nation, and two-thirds of those who identify with scheduled castes or tribes also believe that their specific groups don't face a lot of prejudice.
History of the particular policy domain, social and political processes, like McGirr in “Making Radical Reform” and Alexander in “The Rebirth of Caste”, policies regulating the use of substances, the prohibition of alcohol in McGirr and the War on Drugs in Alexander, were developed in response to larger social and political power struggles around ethnicity and or race. In McGirr's reading, we can see an illustration of how prohibition was linked to racism affecting the latest immigration waves in the nineteenth century. In the New Jim Crow, Alexander described the racialization of drugs such as crack cocaine as the primary factor for the brutal policy response. The drug war in the United States has constantly exposed large amounts to criminalization,
Dharma is the duty a person must achieve in the time they live. Karma is based on your actions so if you have good actions, you will have good karma and if you
There are many different societies in our world today, and each of these communities treat and group their people differently. While some places, like the United States, do not have set groups, others, like India, have very strict laws about what each class can and cannot do. The Caste system in India is a great example of how one society strictly groups their members. The Caste system is a class structure that is determined at birth.
In this way, this text is vital to the Hindu religion because it teaches the reader that sometimes fulfilling one’s dharma is not always easy or
Around 268 to 232 BCE, the Ashoka empire strongly encouraged Dharma because supposedly it was the way to happiness and the way to obtain love. In this civilization there were honors and benefits of following this belief and those who chose to accept the religion. If Dharma wasn’t followed there would be consequence but the only way to be happy would be to conform to the rest of what the empire thought was right. ‘The Edicts of Kings Asoka: An English Rendering’ tells about the beliefs of Ashoka and he think that “through [his own] instruction this regard for Dharma and love of Dharma has grown day by day… my officers high, low and middle rank are practicing and conforming to Dharma, and are capable of inspiring others to do the same.”
Karma was the work they did and dharma was the duty. This determined what caste they would be placed in, and their work and fulfillment of duties would control their placement
The concept of dharma encompasses people’s ethical duties, moral principles, and social responsibilities. This acts as a religious and moral law that controls an individual’s actions. One of the ways one can hold true to their dharma is with the worship of deities. In Christianity, worshipping deities can be seen as worshiping others and false idolatry and is not practiced. Yet in Hinduism, they acknowledge Brahman as the supreme divinity but have a vast pantheon of gods and goddesses that each represent different aspects of the divine, embodying different qualities and powers.
Some might argue that India’s Caste system is closely related to However, Caste and social hierarchy were more different because Caste happens over different lifetimes, and social hierarchy can happen over one. In the caste system people could move their position in their current life, however they could have moved up or down depending on how they acted in their last life. In the Social hierarchy, men could move up or down depending on whom they married, however women could not move throughout the chain. “Women were generally seen as inferior to men, dominated by their bodies rather than their minds.” (McKay pg
India is a very known country to be divided by, not socioeconomic classes, but castes. A caste is any of the social divisions into which Hindu society is traditionally divided , each caste having its own privileges and limitations, transferred by inheritance from one generation to the next. In recent studies it says that “The caste system is a social division in India that stratifies various social groups, with a set of upper castes, “backward” castes, and the most oppressed group, Dalits” (Mahalingam 738). Members in the upper caste, which is the highest caste, are called “Brahmans”. They are responsible for teaching and maintaining sacred knowledge.
It is essentially a whole system to help you’re your life the “right” way. Dharma is not just related to Hinduism, it is found as a reoccurring concept in both Buddhism and Jainism. Much like Christianity, Hinduism has scriptures. Reading between the lines, It is evident there are seeds of philosophical argumentation within Hindu scriptures.
Among the 38 prime minister in Nepal, there is a total dominance of either Bahuns or Chhetris. There has never been a prime minister of lower caste. Although there is quota system for the indigenous communities, they are still discriminated. Dalits in Nepal confront an effective mix of social separation and viciousness that authorizes their below average status. Government inaction helps save this inferior citizenship: the Nepalese government regularly neglects to indict the individuals who participate in victimization Dalits and presently can't seem to make a far reaching get ready for guaranteeing the privileges of Dalits.
