To start of social issue is euthanasia and this issue impacts the families with terminally ill patients, but it is usually impact the family the most. Others that can be impacted are the doctors, lawyers, families of terminally ill members, government, and law makers. My Definition of Social Issue is a problem or conflict that provokes people or a group of people within society. So, my social I have been working on is euthanasia which is the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma. Initially I defined my issue as a small problem in the U.S, but after some research I found that euthanasia is a global subject and it is controversial. The reasons I was interested about this topic …show more content…
Like I said this was a bigger problem than I thought, and it depends more on a person's perspective to be able to judge. There aren’t solid solutions to this problem because the U.S does not does not support euthanasia because it is considered murder. Although, it is permitted at state level depending on the patient’s stage in illness, and where they all located. Also, there has been more people supporting this issue because people are creating awareness mainly sharing their stories, making some types of protest, and there was also a movement created called “Right to Die Movement”. So, it is creating a difference, but hasn’t created a huge impact in the United States since they will not agree to the idea of killing …show more content…
These can allow people to have a good death if they are terminally ill and if they are in great pain, and doctors will have the power to help a patient from suffering instead of a slow painful death. Although these are great ways to solve the problem or at least improve the issue it comes with consequences such as more protest can arise by human right groups for example, the right of life group movement and doctors who are against euthanasia. Euthanasia can become stricter for families and it might cause the lethal injection prices to increase. It might also require you to move to another state that has euthanasia since many states don’t allow it. There will constantly have arguments whether it is against the Hippocratic Oath which will cause more controversy, might go against the person/families religion which can cause problems with the church they go to because of their beliefs and perspective, and people will argue whether doctors are playing god, can cause problems with the state law, activist groups, and religion
Since Oregon legalized physician-assisted suicide for the terminally ill in 1997, euthanasia has been receiving close attention. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, euthanasia is the act or practice of killing someone who is very sick or injured in order to prevent any more suffering. Many states in the U.S have been debating the pros and cons of euthanasia with hopes of legalizing it or having it remain illegal. Advocates for assisted suicide believe those who are mentally competent and suffering from a terminal illness, with no chance of long-term survival, should have the right the end their suffering. They argue if people here legally able to refuse medical treatment they should also have the freedom the end their lives in a quick,
The legal system is in place not only to protect our rights and administer justice, but to increase the quality of life in a society. By legalizing doctor-assisted suicide, the quality of life increases. First, more lives can be saved with the legalization of doctor-assisted suicide. Many diseases such as cancers can take away use of certain organs. By detecting incurable cancers earlier, it is possible to harvest organs such as kidneys (cancer.org, 2014).
One of the more pressing social/medical issues of recent times has been euthanasia, also known as physician-assisted suicide, or the right to die. Proponents of human euthanasia propose that those with a terminal illness should have the right to a clean and painless death with the assistance of a physician, rather than the drawn-out and painful natural death that some will otherwise experience. Being one who was raised in a Christian family, I am morally opposed to suicide in all forms, and I strongly believe a human life is sacred enough that a physician should not be granted the permission or power to take it. Many oppose this act for various reasons: religious in nature, moral grounds, or by medical tradition. Some argue that euthanasia does in fact contradict a professional code of ethics.
It is inevitable, and can 't be reduced or avoided. It 'll benefit not only the patient but also those who love the patient as well. Next, euthanasia should be considered treatment to those who need it. Someone who has an agonizing ailment requires treatment.
However, now, there is more insight on the topic and it can be understood more thoroughly and clearly; therefore, after lots of research and many discussions, the conclusion is that euthanasia should not be legal in the United States, whereas physician assisted suicide should be. Currently euthanasia is illegal in all 50 states, and legalizing it might be too drastic of a change. It can be easily abused and gives the physician immense power. Overall, the drawbacks overpower the benefits when it comes to euthanasia, and it can be too much of a risk as the patient does not always give a clear consent. However, physician assisted suicide gives the patient a free choice, and when it is used, the patient is usually able to give a clearer consent and is aware of what his actions will result in.
The word “euthanize” means to bring about a person’s death to relieve them from serious distress. The topic of euthanasia in medicine has evolved since intensive care was first instituted. Before the 1950’s, a simple model was used to determine when someone was dead: the individual was dead when his or her heart stopped beating. In the modern light, the answer to this question isn’t as clear. With advancements in organ transplantation and other medical technologies, the stopping of a beating heart is no longer a definite death sentence.
Euthanasia? Is it okay to kill someone that has been suffering for years? This has been a controversy for many years. Some individuals have to make a hard decision whether or not to kill their beloved one. They’re tired of seeing them in pain and not being able to do anything for them, many of them turn towards euthanasia.
There are real case incidents in which a 14 year old girl suffering from terminal cystic fibrosis is asking her country’s president for permission to end her life. She had self shot a video in which she says “I am tired of living this disease and she can authorize an injection through which I can sleep forever”. The girl's video has sparked a broader conversation about whether euthanasia should be legalized in the largely Catholic nation. According to me we should let euthanasia be legal as there is no significance in keeping them alive against their wish as we don’t know how much they are suffering. Another incident is where the woman moved to Oregon where euthanasia is legal to take advantage of Oregon’s death with Dignity Law.
A controversial practice that invokes a debate over how beneficial its intentions are is the use of euthanasia. The argument switches between whether or not putting terminally ill patients to death with the assistance of a physician is justifiable and right. Legalizing the practice of euthanasia is a significant topic among many people in society, including doctors and nurses in the medical field, as it forces people to decide where to draw the line between relieving pain and simply killing. While some people see euthanasia as a way to helping a patient by eliminating their pain, it is completely rejected by others who see it as a method of killing.
Religious Perspective As the decision regarding whether or not to legalize Euthanasia from a medical perspective involves religious concerns, looking at religious beliefs play a significant part in the decision making as well. The three largest religious groups, Christianity, Islam and Hinduism, all have distinct viewpoints on the execution of Euthanasia. In Christianity, the issue of Euthanasia is clearly addressed. The Bible states that God and nobody else appoints people to die.
Euthanasia can be interpreted in different ways depending on the person/point of view. Euthanasia is another word for mercy-killing, those who are in great pain and their treatments show no sign of progress can choose euthanasia as an option to die mercifully and with dignity. When a person goes through euthanasia, they consume a euthanasia solution through a vein or by drinking it. Then, they rest as the solution kills them. There have been many controversies on whether euthanasia should be legalized.
From an economic standpoint, euthanasia is a brilliant alternative. Though many see it as unethical, it may be relieving for the victims to know that once they’ve passed they’re no longer considered burdens to their families. Though harsh, keeping a terminally ill person alive for a year costs no less than $55,000, dying in a dignified way is their last resort when they know their condition is not going to improve. Many patients with incurable diseases have stated that the lengthy and expensive time and operations granted by their families are not worth the few extra months they get of spending time on Earth.
The Right to Die has been taking effect in many states and is rapidly spreading around the world. Patients who have life threatening conditions usually choose to die quickly with the help of their physicians. Many people question this right because of its inhumane authority. Euthanasia or assisted suicide are done by physicians to end the lives of their patients only in Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Montana, New Mexico and soon California that have the Right to Die so that patients don’t have to live with depression, cancer and immobility would rather die quick in peace.
In this case, healthcare professionals actively participate in the patient death. According to ethical principles, healthcare professionals should do good and do no harm for patients. Therefore, assisting in her death violates the principle of nonmaleficence. In addition, active euthanasia defines as an intentional act of ending patients lives, whether or not the dying patients request. Four states, Oregon, Washington, Vermont, and Montana have approved laws of the practice of physician-assisted suicide.
The most common location for the euthanasia act is in Netherlands but also in some other locations around the world. In the Netherlands euthanasia is also allowed without a parents or guardians consent. My argument is that I am pro euthanasia just because when you put yourself in a person shoes you would understand what they been through and the suffering pain they endure every day after the cause of illness. My opinion on this topic is that if I was in this predicament I would want to be able to choose whether or not I would like to choose a quick and painless death than suffering from pain and suffering on a daily basis. The cost for the medication or what the lethal dosing item is less than 100 dollars but the cost of a assisted suicide can cost up to 100,000 dollars just to insure proper care of the patient to help the family in grief.
