The social issue we decided on is substance abuse. Substance abuse is when you are abusing the use of alcohol or drugs. Some substances that are abused are Alcohol, Marijuana, Cocaine, Methamphetamines, and Nicotine. We picked this as our social issue because it is important to raise awareness and help the people who do abuse substances receive help. You have many people dealing with sobriety, but without help they end up back to their old ways. Alcoholism is a vicious cycle and without help most abusers destroy their life and body. Most substance abusers do both drugs and alcohol. There are many people whose families have someone that is abusing substance. Mothers, fathers, and teenagers are all examples of people who abuse substances. Without help they end up in jails because of public intoxication. …show more content…

The Houston recovery center, as referred from their website, is an organization that works to help people who are arrested for public intoxication to find some help and become sober. When you are arrested by the Houston police department for public intoxication they check you in to the sobriety center instead of taking you to jail. They give you screenings, and have counseling services so that you can receive the help you need. Although some of the people taken are One-time substance abusers, most of them have been abusing substances for a long time. The great thing about the Houston Recovery Center is the environment is safe and the services are voluntary. After you sober up, and you decide if you want to get help.
