The first is that one society cannot say they are better than another. We would not be allowed to say that a Communist country is inferior to us. The second is that one would be able to decide if our actions were right or wrong based on the standards of our society. In some cultures, the kidnapping of a girl or a woman is actually a traditionally common marriage practice. Taking someone without their consent is not right.
Rites, Morals and Community: East-West Perspectives on the Role of Ritual Daniela Rusu 1. Introduction Confucius (551-479) and Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) both take up a cornerstone position in the history of thinking about society. When we zoom in on their conceptions on the social functions of rites, we find both overlap and have strong differences. Both Confucius and Kant attached great importance to areas like religion, rituals, study and education in society. Confucius however, adheres to a strict hierarchical societal structure.
Discuss the implications of XunZi and Mencius’ views on Human Nature RE Philosophy Group 2 2015 Group Members: Chen Jin Yang (4) Li Ze Hua (15) Lu Shao Qin (18) Aaron Tan (25) Theodore Kuah (27) Introduction Human nature is an abstract concept, defined in modern terms as the general psychological characteristics, feelings, and behavioural traits of humankind. This is a topic that has been debated amongst a number of philosophers throughout history, and in this paper we will be specifically looking at two chinese philosophers, Mencius and Xunzi. Although both of them are Confucian thinkers, they have seemingly contradictory ideas on whether human nature is inherently good or bad. The main aim of this paper
It is a long held truth in society that it is always better to be the bigger person. There is something to be said for those who will not do unto others as those others have done to them. It takes a large amount of strength to overcome the thirst for justice, especially when there is no equitable justice to be had. However, whatever wrong has been done in the past, there is a future and in order to prevent history repeating, perhaps society should look at the example it is setting. Stephen Nathanson asks us to truly delve deeper into the principle of lex talionis and examine if getting what is given is the right path to take when it comes to punishing criminals.
Humans can do what is morally good by following the guidance of the four seeds (Kim.M, 2008) The reason behind these four seeds, is Mengzi’s importance placed on feelings and emotions and how they motivate us to care for others. And by caring for immediate family first is how we can extend to caring for everyone. ‘Serving parents’ is the primary meaning for humaneness, and ‘Respecting elders’, and not just family, is the primary meaning of rightness (Chen.L, 2015). The most basic manifestation of humaneness is to love and serve one’s parents. For Mengzi, humaneness in practice that was extended to non-family members was a moral priority that society prescribed for the good person (Chen.L, 2015).
Having solids friendships definitely are important at all times but needed to help prevent depression and isolation which could lead into bad habits. In having solid friend they truly help make rough times go by faster and creating happier memories. Another quote from Mayo Clinic Staff, “Friendship increases your sense of belonging and purpose, boosts your happiness and reduce your stress and improves your self-confidence and self-worth (2).” Truly meaning that having friends in life will create more happiness and make those feel like they belong. Friends improve others self-worth which all helps when someone is struggling through rough times. They help reduce stress which is needed in the lives of many.
Finally even in the shoes of the dying person, they may choose life support because it gives them false hope, rather than trying to fight they would just give up and stick to that method. They would lose all their positivity because they will be just thinking if life support all day and would lose the happiness even in the last moments in their life. As you may notice, keeping a dying person on life support can prove to have many negative effects, some unintentional, some just because our emotions don’t allow us or even because of the false hope that seems to build up. Life support is meant for temporary use only and should not be used for a dying
He believed that the key to running a good society was to show respect for ones elders. It was a concept or aspect of life that was really important to the Chinese that a Chinese emperor turned that practice of filial piety into a law. Therefore, if you were being disrespectful towards your elders, you would be punishable by law. The idea of filial piety has been ingrained in children and teenagers for many years. Filial piety is mainly about children caring for their parents in order to pay them back for taking care of them when they were kids.
People do not live as sacrifices for others, nor do they live merely as parts of a machine functioning to bring out maximum happiness for the society, which is not essentially connected to individuals. One ought to pursuit their own best self interest. It’s worth noting, however, that self interest does not necessarily have to be limited to physical advantages, but personal benefits in general, which includes emotional and spiritual comforts as well. The world consists of separate individuals; no matter how people claim to be connected to each other, it’s merely interactions among them with some emotions attached, which is part of the human nature. To any person, the only feeling that matters is his own; while he may be sympathetic sometimes, it’s merely because he has been emotionally attached to that person, not because what brings up his emotion truly matters.
Plato, in his writing, uses powerful examples that work to communicate his ideas in a less extreme manner. Despite that, this does not work to explain why Plato feels so strongly about equality in the just city. In working through this argument, there are many difficulties in connecting it to the question of justice. It is hard to say, initially,
