Social Media: How does Social Media affect teenagers?
My Question Social Media, it’s all about how many likes, comments, and followers you have on Instagram. How many friends you have on facebook. How many retweets on your Twitter account and so much more. So, I wanted to find out how social media affect teenagers all over the country. Personally having social media accounts I know that it causes low self-esteem, cyberbullying, and so much more. My mom has always told me I don’t need social media because it is unhealthy and it is a waste of time. As I began reading I found out that, yes, that is true. According to Katie Hurley, LCSW, “Those who had spent more time on social media had 2.2 times the risk of reporting eating and body image concerns, compared to their peers who spent less time on social media. The participants who spent the most time on social media had 2.6 times the risk” (Social Media and Teens: How Does Social Media Affect Teenagers’ Mental Health). After finding all the negative impacts of social media on teenagers I wondered if there were any positives of social media. As I began researching I saw that many teenagers do have positive benefits from social media. One in five say that it makes them more confident versus the 4% that disagrees. Many other teens say that it makes them feel more outgoing and less shy. So, as you can see social media isn't all that bad (Wallace, Kelly).
