Social media in learning fields can be a valuable tool for tertiary institutions. Professors are faced with the need to develop social media policies that allow the institution to reap the positive benefits of social media use while minimizing the negative effects (Boyd and Ellison, 2014).

One must work with one another to get things done, and mobility adds another layer of complexity because the person to study with may not be in physical proximity. Thus, it has quickly become an accepted practice for students to use social media platform such as facebook internally and externally as well as to achieve their educational goal. It was commonly agreed that social media platform such as facebook in particular have had a profound effect by changing the nature of efficiency of communication processes in both educational and private life (Beck, 2007). The rise of facebook is rapidly changing how tertiary institutions operate and communicate. Tertiary institutions off all kinds are looking for ways to seize advantage in this emerging era marked by greater immediacy, interactivity and transparency. The new media is growing so fast that it makes it imperative for employees to embrace the medium in …show more content…
They found that males benefit academically from facebook use, but women who use facebook intensively have a lower academic performance, captured by the interaction effects of facebook use in general gender (Jeretta Horn Nord , Joanna Paliszkiewicz , AlexKoohang, 2014). Most people don’t socialize because of too much of jealousy on facebook which later brings conflicts among the students especially female students. For instance, there has been a incident that has happened three weeks away from now, some second year female students had an argument and two actually fought each other just because of facebook. It really distracts students from studying and doing their work because they already developed habit in it and spends less time in doing their studies and it pays off in the grading and it leads to failing in the courses they
It may have an impact because females made up 75% of the respondents and 52% of the respondents reported scrolling through active social media accounts while either studying or doing homework. However, there was a very small difference between respondents that reported that they did not scroll through active accounts (44%). The results cannot prove whether there is a relationship between gender and if a person scrolls through active social media accounts while trying to study or do homework. The number of males and female are disproportionate. It may seem that females are more likely to scroll through active social media accounts, but the willingness of mostly females to respond to the survey needs to be taken into
The digital age has skyrocketed in the last couple of years, some were born into it and most witnessed it. These people had to adapt and use it to their advantage in the evolving workforce. After time went on, they integrated their methods into their systems and kept old habits. Years later, the kids born into this age started to join in and bring their new habits that were unfamiliar to the current workforce. The article written by Lee Rainie on his Pew-Research webpage in 2006, "Digital Natives Invade the Workspace" analyzes the changes they brought it.
Social Media Essay Imagine if all the years of hard studying and late nights staying up, doing homework was taken away by one post on social media. Social media accounts can be used against a college student or it can be used as a tool for college students to help get accepted; it all depends on how one uses it. Colleges should be able to use social media because college is a privilege for people to attend and if people really want to go to college they should be able to clean up their accounts, a lot of people want to use social media as a helpful tool to get accepted, and because colleges have to be so selective in who they take into their school they should have the right to look at a student’s profile if it is public. One reason that colleges should be able to use social media is the fact that college is a privilege and students should be able to clean up their social media profiles if they really want to get accepted.
Abstract In Tweet Like an Egyptian, Kevin Clarke discussed how the internet have promoted a new way of communication and how it has positively influenced many people around the world. An internet-generated power is now on the rise and the society looks forward to its positive results. In the I’m so Totally, Digitally, Close to You that was authored by Clive Thompson, the advantages and disadvantages of using Facebook and other social media are discussed, and it was claimed that social media is beneficial for the creation and maintenance of relationships. The article In What College Mean to the Other America written by Mike Rose reflected on the fact that there are marginalized groups in the United States and that the government should act in support of their needs for better and accessible education.
Maria Konnikova first assumes that no one joins Facebook to be sad and lonely. However, she found a study by Ethan Cross (2013), a psychologist from the University of Michigan and his colleagues which argue that people who used Facebook will become unhappy. They wanted to find out how the use of Facebook can affect them. The support is objective because the author presents facts and clear evidence, for example research done by Robert Kraut (1998) found that more people used the Web, the lonelier and more depressed they felt. In addition, after people went online for the first time, their sense of happiness and social connectedness dropped.
In her essay “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such A Bad Idea,” Melissa Healy argues that kids most likely to spend lots of time on social media sites are not the least well-adjusted, but the psychologically healthiest. I agree with most of the points Healy discusses in her article in the Los Angeles Times. The concept that teens use social media to keep in touch with friends is the first point I agree with. I think that the internet has proved to be an excellent source for adolescents to communicate with each other quickly as well as to develop important social skills. I think that the internet allows for teens to practice how to communicate with other people.
The wellsprings of the media picked are unmistakable. As Jay Blumler brings up in his book The Use of Mass Communication, where he asserts that studies have demonstrated that crowd satisfactions can be gotten from no less than three particular sources: media content, introduction to the media in essence, and social connection that encapsulates the circumstance of presentation to various media (Blumler 1974). It is clear that groups of viewers invest energy utilizing the media as a part of different ways. Whether they are killing time or utilizing it as a social instrument, every medium is novel in its motivation.
Apps like Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, and Buzzfeed can cause a decrease in the overall products of students’ works and an increase in the amount of time needed to complete the product because of the incessant notifications that show up on an individual’s screen every five minutes. In a 2011 study conducted by Wade Jacobsen and Renata Forste on “Academic and Social Outcomes of Electronic Media Use Among College Students,” they concluded from more than 1,000 undergraduates that 2.45 hours are spent on the internet, and an hour is usually spent watching television. High school students spend roughly about 2.3 hours on technology and media everyday, and as new media platforms come out, more time is spent on them. The temptations of answering someone or looking at who liked your picture on Instagram causes great disruptions in studying and workplaces. When a student’s final product is not up to the standards or is incomplete, it can severely affect their grades in school.

According to Canneil University’s (Steven Strogatz, 2005), “Social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media”. When the young people prioritise these less than meaningful relationships, the more important connections like parents-children and sisters-brothers relationship will weaken because the less they communicate with each other, the higher the risk for the meaningful relationship to be damaged. They also score low in schools because of the distractions like video games, watching videos, and chatting with known and unknown person in social media sites. People never realise that all of these kind of distractions are actually the distractions that they created themselves. Young people may cause their future to be beaten by their own current attitude because ‘how’ they think now is ‘how’ they are going to be in the
