Social media in learning fields can be a valuable tool for tertiary institutions. Professors are faced with the need to develop social media policies that allow the institution to reap the positive benefits of social media use while minimizing the negative effects (Boyd and Ellison, 2014).
Social media is defined as the websites that built on web 2.0 technologies to provide space for dialogue ,collaboration , social interaction and community formation (Dwyer, 2013).In addition, according to the journal article, Kaplan and Haenlein (2010 p,182)define social media as “a group of internet- based applications that built on the ideological and technological foundations of web 2.0 and that allow the creation and exchange of User Generated Content …show more content…

One must work with one another to get things done, and mobility adds another layer of complexity because the person to study with may not be in physical proximity. Thus, it has quickly become an accepted practice for students to use social media platform such as facebook internally and externally as well as to achieve their educational goal. It was commonly agreed that social media platform such as facebook in particular have had a profound effect by changing the nature of efficiency of communication processes in both educational and private life (Beck, 2007). The rise of facebook is rapidly changing how tertiary institutions operate and communicate. Tertiary institutions off all kinds are looking for ways to seize advantage in this emerging era marked by greater immediacy, interactivity and transparency. They found that males benefit academically from facebook use, but women who use facebook intensively have a lower academic performance, captured by the interaction effects of facebook use in general gender (Jeretta Horn Nord , Joanna Paliszkiewicz , AlexKoohang, 2014). Most people don’t socialize because of too much of jealousy on facebook which later brings conflicts among the students especially female students. For instance, there has been a incident that has happened three weeks away from now, some second year female students had an argument and two actually fought each other just because of facebook. It really distracts students from studying and doing their work because they already developed habit in it and spends less time in doing their studies and it pays off in the grading and it leads to failing in the courses they
