Social media challenges have become a growing trend over the years, especially among young internet users. Challenges are usually harmless, and they can be a great way for people across the world to connect with each other and have fun together online. Many of these challenges are created lightheartedly and done with humor, such as the mannequin challenge, which encouraged people to post videos of themselves standing still like a mannequin. Some challenges were even created to bring awareness to a cause or to raise money for a charity, like the ice bucket challenge. Unfortunately, some challenges are created out of malice, and they bring with them death and destruction.
When we mention social media, many of us think of the recent uses such as Snapchat, with the filters and recording. YouTube, with the recent news or funny cat videos. Twitter, where many follow others for jokes or just to share how their day had been, many times it is where people get their news. Maybe an online game where a friend had been made and ended up being the closest thing to comfort, or as people prefer to put it, a small gap to forget the problems in reality. There are many pros and cons to social media, many of us like to see the positive side, where social media is able to spread word of an incoming disaster in minutes.
There may be some reasons why social media is good for kids, but all and all social media is dangerous to the well-being and education of minors. To start with, social media is dangerous to kids that are online because people can be anonymous, predators, and/or cyberbullies. For example, Hinduja, a professor of criminal justice, at Florida Atlantic University says that about 20% of youth have been either victims or perpetrators of cyberbullying. Also, masking one 's identity on the internet make someone more likely to be a cyberbully (SIRS 1). Masking one’s identity can be a serious problem.
Thus, I believe technology poses a serious threat to mankind; nevertheless, we see the different organizations who have created Facebook, YouTube and Twitter use these upgrades to better their software; unaware of the mischief it creates, as it makes it easier for students and peers to terrorize each other, anonymously. For several years, we have watched parents and guardians mourn the losses of their children as a result of being cyber bullied. Cyberbullies, who are ordinary people just like you and I, use the different social media platforms to attack others generally because they believe they will not be caught or these devices makes it easier for those rascals to intimidate others for fun. After reading the other article“The Upside of Selfies: Social media isn’t all bad for kids”, by Kelly Wallace (CNN), which shows that social media can be beneficial to teens,and how it helps them. After reading the two articles, it has been concluded that social media can be harmful; but, there is more evidence to support that social media can be beneficial.
The first example that Bennett used was about the Star Wars kid and how he not knowingly got filmed reenacting scenes from the Star Wars film. The kid was just having fun and in an instant is out there for everyone to get a laugh at. This video became a source of public humiliation, precisely what every kids fears the most.
