Throughout my professional career, I have witnessed the importance of services provided by social workers to promote social welfare and community well-being. I first observed how essential social workers are while in the military. I saw firsthand how intensely the social workers worked to assist military members in improving their well-being. As a licensed nurse, I worked alongside social workers to assist patients with problems affecting their daily lives. My experiences and values heavily influenced my decision to pursue a career in social work.

Being competent or having the knowledge and skill to perform a job or duty effectively was required only to be a good employee. However, throughout my years of developing as a student and employee, I realized that competence was more than that. I discovered that it also benefited those around me. It allowed me to complete duties efficiently and effectively. Being competent helped me to be a valuable team member, which benefited the organization as a whole. I consider myself to be a lifelong learner. I would continue to develop and utilize my skills and knowledge to help solve any issues I encounter as a social worker.
Integrity and service are also values that I consider vital because of my previous experiences. Integrity and service are two of the Army's Seven Core Values. I was taught that it was expected that a soldier has integrity, which means being honest and doing what is right at all times. I was able to make hard decisions as a leader because of this principle. I always considered what was legally and morally right. Integrity is a principle I apply in my everyday life, and I apply it to do what is right when faced with challenges or dilemmas. Establishing relationships and maintaining relationships was something I always put a lot of effort into. Throughout my life, I learned the importance of human relationships. I found that wholesome human relationships were essential to accomplish many goals, including providing high-quality care for patients. The interpersonal relationships created between patients, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals allowed everyone to collaborate as a proficient healthcare team. These relationships helped support effective communication, build trust, understanding, empathy, and many other positive outcomes. These outcomes benefited not only the well-being of the patients but the staff as well.
