According to (Chris Glynn, 2019) in their book on the Dynamics of Homelessness in Urban America, high cost of living and rental costs was the number one cause of homelessness in urban America. I have been working as a case manager since May 2023 at Platinum Community Care in Westchester, New York, and I have mostly handled homeless clients. I had made a career change from Business to Case Management to align with my passion for social work, but I was not prepared to hit the ground running. I have handled hoards of homeless clients since day one and face the grim reality of the social issue that is homelessness. The experience has further confirmed that social work is the educational and career path in that I will excel, and I no longer look astounded whenever I ask a client for their address, and they do not have one. I rather surprise them with the ease with which I take in the information and even direct them to ask friends and relatives if they can receive mail on their behalf. It has become a situation that I relate to, understand, and have the ability to create lasting solutions …show more content…
I checked the available facilities too, and I will happily take advantage of the availed staff and facilities to morph myself into a highly-skilled, knowledgeable, and versatile social worker who will create solutions. I will be happy to indulge in tuition, studies, and research and create a better version of myself that will be indispensable in the social work marketplace. I will be happy to volunteer a few hours every week to social work at the university and continue to build up my
Upon completing this program I plan to work with individuals seeking support, guidance, and personal growth. To fortify this work, I intend to attain clinical licensure. Although social work practices can ameliorate client troubles, I would also like the ability to find possible solutions within diagnoses, further evaluation, and treatment. Utilizing the Advanced Clinical Practice concentration offered in this program will allow me to become familiar with working in clinical settings and apply my coursework knowledge to real work situations. A crucial piece I look for when entering an academic program or workplace is the ability to create real, tangible change.
I have the ability to engage in effective social work practice as I have been exposed to many settings which have provided me the groundwork build my competencies. I have been in a school setting to which I was providing individual and group therapy for students ages 5 through 18. I utilized cognitive behavioral therapy worksheets which are evidence-based and recognized the changes in some students. I ensured that the worksheets utilized were appropriate for whichever age group. During my time in the hospital setting, I built my skills in assessing client needs and coordinating with many community organizations for needed resources.
I have struggled to keep my school work a priority as I need to balance it with my part-time work and with the things I like to do to keep my life as normal as possible (like cheerleading and spending time with my friends). I am very honored and thankful to be the first the person in my family to attend college fall of 2016. As I strive to end my senior year positive, I always remember to tell my younger siblings to try as hard as they can in school, because “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I’ve decided that I would like to get my degree in social work, specifically working with children. Growing I’ve been around kids that are unhappy with thier home, but couldn’t do anything about it.
In social work there is diversity among clients and colleagues and a social worker must know how to adapt in this changing environment. When faced with challenges, I have sought out the support and advice from professors, social workers, and classmates and this has been effective for me. I found that making preconceived notions about others had limited me, but being in this program has given me an opportunity to meet a diverse group of individuals. This opportunity has allowed me to evolve into a better person, but have made lifetime
I had to keep this in mind when assessing the clients needs. Also, I did a lot of self reflecting. As a social worker, I wanted to ensure that I was not counter transferring my feelings onto the client. In addition, Dr. McGhee, the professor of SW in Social Service Environment, gave the class numerous of opportunities to enlighten us as to how professional social workers engage with clients. We were afforded the opportunity to visit a community based agency and assist the agency with putting together supplies for an upcoming health fair that was beneficial for the
Homelessness has been an ongoing issue since its emergence in the 1870’s since then it has continued to rise over time. The homelessness Crisis is one of the biggest problems the United States faces today. As of today, there are approximately more than 500,000 people experiencing homelessness. This is a major issue as nearly half a million people without a home have to sleep on the streets, have nothing to eat, no medical care, and many more things that homeless individuals do not have the luxury of having for various reasons. The most common reasons are the cost of living is constantly rising, unemployment, low income, mental illnesses, and substance abuse.
For many years now, the homelessness community has needed a change within the United States. Homelessness is a reoccurring issue that cannot be stopped with the current steps
After this assignment I have learned that Department of Social Services provides a lot of different services to those in need. Just from hearing and reading stories those who work in the field of Social Services aren’t always given a good rep, especially those who work in Child Protective Services. From doing this interview I was pleasantly surprised as to how much work Social Workers do to provide children with a safe and stable environment. There is a lot that goes into what they do every day. I have always known I want to work with children.
The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. Though there are many contributing factors that contribute to the amount of people living on the street at any given night in the U.S.

My passion for helping and supporting those whose economic and financial standings have hindered their growth in our society, has driven me towards social work. I feel I have exhausted every possible avenue in my current degree field. Pursuing a master’s in Social Work, will give me the diversity that I need, while aiding me in bringing my dreams of working more in depth with clients, by helping assist them with their individual needs and issues to reality. The Social work field also offers versatility which allows me to work in many dimensions, such as clinical, case management, and many other composites which enables me to help every population. Becoming a social worker gives me other benchmarks in which I can use to evaluate programs,
I want to bring my unique background and values into this program to extend the knowledge of social work that I have already
After retiring from the military, I vowed to earn a degree in Psychology to understand struggles in the human thought process. My current education has better equipped me to understand the challenges and need for social structures to provide support, guidance, and opportunities to those who are systemically disenfranchised. A graduate degree in Social Work will equip me with the skills necessary to change lives. As with professional experiences in the United States Marine Corps, I am determine to be
Social work is a profession that dedicates its efforts to ensure the well-being of individuals and the well-being of the society as a whole. The primary mission of social workers is to meet the fundamental needs of every person, especially the ones with special needs such as those who are oppressed, vulnerable and the people living in poverty. As a social worker, I intend to use these core values such as service, integrity, and dignity as guidelines to my work to make a difference in the lives of as many needy people as I can. My main goal will be to offer services to needy people to help them solve and overcome social problems that they encounter each day in their lives.
Over the semester I have learned many new aspects of social work that have helped deepen my understanding of what social work is really about. This course has taught me things that will help me become a better person and will also help me with my future working with children. Self reflection is a key skill to have when working in social work. We need to understand how we are, and our social location, influence everything we do with social work. My beliefs and values would be beneficial for being a social worker because I have a caring no judgment, personality that allows me to be a neutral and to listen to people.
