The topics of racism and identity are not brought to light often enough. Social construction, dehumanizing biases, discrimination, and social groups are important aspects that play big parts in day-to-day life whether or not you realize it. We must consider these concepts in our daily life. Social construction plays a large role in identity in relation to race.
Journal #2 I love to think of myself as a critically-thinking individual who comes to conclusions solely based on personal analyses of the world around me. In reality, I am largely a reflection of the cultures and spaces I occupy. The Cycle of Socialization by Bobbie Haro, defines socialization as “systematic training on how to beach of our social identities throughout our lives.” Thinking of my upbringing as something that is systemic sheds a different perspective on my realities. I was raised in a conservative, catholic, middle class family.
The most influential agent of socialization I the family. In this chapter this is shown, generally the kids in “street” families had the tendency to act similar to their parents. “The kind of home he comes from influences but does not determine the way he will ultimately turnout,” (105). The kids would be quick to hit someone else if they did not get their way, they would yell and argue in very unorderly fashions, just like they had seen their parents do or other adults they had been surrounded by. Aside from family peers are also a strong agent of socialization, especially in a system like this in which children are raised through accomplishment of natural growth, in which they are surrounded by other children in all their free time and often times children not in their age group.
Political socialization is a life time process by people in which they form their own ideas and beliefs of politics and acquire political values. My political socialization was influenced by my family. However, the mass media and my future educational achievements and financial goals had created an impact on my political socialization. My political socialization is that my belief understanding of politics came from the time when I was a young teenager. It was when my family had taught me about understanding politics and what the meaning of it is.
In the textbook Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory, we are introduced to some of the first sociologists and their theories. Two sociologists that are relevant to present issues about racism would be Emile Durkheim and W.E.B. Du Bois. In Durkheim’s The Rules of Sociological Method, he mentions that crime is necessary for society because it “defines the moral boundaries of a society” (Appelrouth and Edles 2016: 99). Basically without crime, people would not realize what the definition of right and wrong behavior is. Having crime in our society makes us realize our morals and basically institutes the idea in our head that criminal acts are not appropriate behaviors.
Socialization is the process where individuals acquire the language, social skills, and values to conform to the norms of a specific society or culture. Socialization is shown many times throughout GI Jane. Some examples are: Lt. O’Neil’s boyfriend, who is also a military member, does not support her and feel that she should attempt the impossible as she is a woman. He would represent both a family or peer agent in this movie. When she arrives the Commanding Officer greets her and attempts to steady or pull the chair out for her as that is a common gesture to do for women.
Socialization is considered a process that starts from birth (MCI, 2013a) and is without a doubt an important part of the child’s development. Social development has been found to be closely connected to the child’s emotional development (MCI, 2013a). During infancy the child forms relationships with others that provide him/her with the trust needed to become independent. This in turns provides the child with the self-esteem required to start exploring his/her environment. Clearly the child’s environment consists of people and this is where social interaction begins.
Another major political socialization agent that helped me shaped my political opinions were my friends. Many of my best friends are part of the LGBT community and have very strong opinions when it comes to politics. Since I am surrounded with friends most of the time because I am at school most of the day, they have made me realize that it was unfair that they were not able to get married when they wanted to because it was not allowed in most states. All of my friends also vowed not to get married until all the fifty states in America allowed same-sex couples to get married. I supported their decision and agreed because if they are happy, I am happy as well.
The first concept of discussion is socialization. Per Conley, socialization is the process by which people internalize non-material culture of a specific society and use it to learn how to function as a member of society (Conley, D., p. 114).
For our group and our shared love of food we figured that a social norm that had something to do with that would be perfect for us. We decided that the norm to drive through a drive thru needed to be tested. Why should cars be the only ones with the fast access to fast food at their convenience? We believed that people should be able to walk through the drive thrus if it is more convenient for them.
Everyone is born without culture and unfamiliar with what socialization is and how to socialize. Socialization is a specific sociological technique that transpires through engaging with family, friends, and coworkers. By learning and understanding the expectations and societal norms, acquire society’s beliefs and familiar with societal values (Keirns, 2015). The process of socialization is taught not long after birth and then throughout our life. This is how we become effective human beings in society.
Socialisation is a big factor in the influence on behaviour, socialization refers to the behaviour we learn and what we see as the norms and values of our society. There are two types of socialization; Primary and secondary. Primary socialization is what we are socialized to by our family, and this is probably the main environmental pressure when learning the ideologies of society. This is because family are, for most of us, the people we spend the most time with and look up to. We are therefore more likely to copy the behaviour of the parents and or siblings and think that their morals are correct.
Social development is the way in which a child or young person learns to fit in to the world that they live in. Developing emotional resiliance, self reliance, principles, morals and learning to maintain friendships and relationships with others. In the first six months of life, babies will communicate through crying to express their needs, such as hunger, tiredness, warmth or emotional comfort. They will smile and form a close bond with their main caregivers.
Social constructionism is an approach to psychology which suggests that certain aspects of the world, such as knowledge, only ceases to exist because we give it reality and meaning (reference). For example, money has no value as it’s just paper and metal. However, as a society, we agree it has value by giving money a reality through social agreement. Likewise, social constructionism is the idea that reality and meaning forms our interactions with others, rather than our personality (reference). Within society, we are all members of different groups, some we choose to be a part of (such as sports team), and some we automatically belong to (such as gender or age).
Social Problems in Societies Social problems are issues which are considered to affect majority if not all members of a society either directly or indirectly. Whenever people come to live together in a social setting, conflict arises from their differences in opinions regarding political issues, religion, ethnic issues, cultural practices and other health and hygiene issues. In such a situation, we can say a society inevitably develops social problems. The various social issues present today vary from society to society, and as such, we cannot say that all societies face similar social issues.
