I think the way my parents reared me affect the way I see USA culture, my parents were educated people, we have a fair life. I had caregivers who cultivated my education. At that time technology was not center of my daily life, I grew up in a semi-city. I could play on the streets, and run around the neighborhood with my friends. The child born to poverty will be less likely to have a bicycle, skateboard, football club membership, swimming lessons etc. This lack of opportunity, coupled with a less nutritionally dense diet will have a detrimental effect on bone and muscle growth and thus restrict development in these areas. *Social and emotional Development the reduced invites, abilities and self-esteem experienced by a child from a family with no financial security will create reduced opportunities for development in these areas. Unequal Childhoods is an ethnography outlining the study done by Annette Lareau which researched how socioeconomic classes impact parenting among both white and African American families. She used both participant observation and interviewing. 12 families participated in this study where she came to conclusions on whether they displayed parenting styles of concerted cultivation or natural growth based of their socioeconomic status. Concerted cultivation is a parenting style where the parent(s) are fully invested in creating as much opportunity for their child as possible, but results in a child with a sense of entitlement. An example of this would be a parent who places their children in a wide array of extracurricular activities and/or actively speaks to educators about the accommodations their child needs to effectively learn.
These three categories are influential to all people and altering any of them can drastically change someone’s life. With these ideas in mind, the one that affects children in dysfunctional families the most is the type of education they receive and as how much education their family achieved. Education can cultivate different ways of thinking and helps students make better decisions in life. Schools are a form of community and incorporate many social interactions outside of the home such as, the investment of educators, staff, parents and friends.
A volunteer experience of mine that comes to mind is one that is probably my most favorite volunteer experience yet. It is one that I get to do at my very own school called DUCK Week (Doing Unselfish Charities for Kids), which is a week long event that I have been a part of since I joined Piedmont Schools as a second grader. What makes this charity unique is that it focuses only on a member or a few members in our very own community, which is why we are able to be so successful with it. It is easier for someone to understand the need to help when it is someone that they may know. This small town in Oklahoma rallies around community members and together we raise funds to help those in need.
