Sociology, the study of social behavior, can shed light on many aspects of everyday life. Things that many people assume may be deemed false by sociological research. Sometimes these facts can even be unsettling and inconvenient. Many aspects of life and human behavior can be studied by sociologists and confirmed by sociological research. However, there are many aspects that affect the research that is discovered. The society in which we all live is constantly changing and yet it is stable. As society evolves, people adopt to these changes yet they follow general patterns of behavior. The context of society, “the institutions and culture that surround us, shapes what we do and think” (Anderson, Taylor, Logio, 2015:p.4). When pondering a research …show more content…
Twenty point seven percent of births in Mississippi were to women under twenty in 1997. Just as I suggested earlier, the Southern states may have the highest rate due to social factors. As stated by Sociology: The Essentials, “...all human behavior occurs in a social context. The context, the institutions and culture that surround us, shapes what people do and think” (Anderson, Taylor, Logio, 2015:p.26). The behavior of humans in society is formed by institutions such as families, religion, marriage, government, and the economy. All of these affect the way people live their lives. To put in perspective, the teen birth rate in Mississippi might be higher than any other state because social institutions, such as family and marriage, maybe looked at differently. For example, if Mississippi has had a long term record of high teen birth rates it makes sense for why they remain on the top of the list. For families shape the way young people think, what they do, and how they live. So if many teens are growing up with parents who were pregnant as young people, those teens are highly more likely to see being pregnant a normal occurrence. As a result, those teens see nothing wrong with getting pregnant and end up in the same position as their parents. Therefore, continuing the high teen birth rates in …show more content…
Teens between the ages fifteen and nineteen are either in their first year of college or are in high school. When considering the situation in which most teens might be in when they find out they are pregnant, it is clear that these young women are in tough situations. Many teens who find out they are pregnant are less likely to finish high school and or go onto college. “Teen parents face chronic unemployment and are less likely to complete high school than those who delay childbearing” (Anderson, Taylor, Logio, 2015:p.299). It is interesting to analyze then the data collected concerning both teen births and the population per state with a college degree. Although the data does not match up perfectly, it is important to note that teen parents are less likely to have a strong education. In addition, the teens who are in college or have plans to go to college are less likely to get pregnant. Finally, states that have more population with a college degree are less likely to have a high rate of teen births, as well as, the states that have a high rate of births to teens are less likely to have a high population with people who have college
It is particularly noteworthy that teenagers, who are often low-income individuals, are disproportionately affected by unintended pregnancies (Gender Data). Such pregnancies frequently disrupt educational paths, interrupting teenage mothers' academic pursuits and limiting their opportunities for future success (Gender Data). Moreover, unintended pregnancies can also hinder women's educational and career aspirations. Women pursuing higher education or focused on building their professional lives may face difficult choices when confronted with an unintended pregnancy. The decision to continue with the pregnancy can potentially disrupt their educational progress or career advancement (Gender Data).
Research shows unintended pregnancies are associated with birth defects low birth weight, elective abortion, and maternal depression, reduced rates of breastfeeding and increased risk of physical violence during pregnancy (10 Colorado winnable battles). Teen mothers are more likely to drop out from high school and not earn high school diploma. Avoiding unwanted pregnancy helps to reduce social and economic costs that are expenditure on health care. Every $ 1.00 invested in publicly funded family planning saves 7.09 in Medicaid. Colorado has now more than 40 % drop in teen pregnancy because of CDPHE family planning initiative that provided services for more than 30,000 for low or no
This can be explained by teenagers in rural areas lacking access contraceptive services. When considering prenatal care in the first trimester, those in urban counties have better access to doctors and clinics. This is shown by the percentage of those that receive prenatal care in Travis County (73.9%) and those that receive it in Nacogdoches County (55.1%). The impression is that when people have better access to health care, like in urban counties, they generally have lower rates of communicable diseases and mortality due to disease. Travis showed a lower rate of sexually transmitted diseases (Chlamydia 599.0 and Gonorrhea 172.0), heart disease deaths (120.9), and cancer deaths (136.3) as opposed to the higher rates shown by Nacogdoches (Chlamydia: 613, Gonorrhea: 172.2, heart disease: 155.9, and cancer: 161.2)
By strange coincidence, that is just about the proportion of the county 's youths in poverty who are black or
Pueblo County has the second highest teen pregnancy rate in the state of Colorado. If teenage pregnancy is such a major problem, why haven’t the parents of Pueblo stopped it? The community also
A. I learned a lot of things while i watched the documentary on the MS-13s. They do a lot of things that i never knew people could do. There are so many members in this gang and everyone wants to be higher and higher up each day. A good term from our sociology book that i connected to the documentary was Competition. Competition in biology and sociology, is a contest between two or more organisms, animals, individuals, groups, etc., for territory, a niche, for a location of resources, for resources and goods, for mates, for prestige, for recognition, for awards, for group or social status, or for leadership.
(paragraph 1) In just 2014 alone there were 249,078 babies born from teen mother from ages 15-19. 35% of those pregnant teens have chosen abortion, less than 1% gave the baby for for adoption, and 15% had a miscarriage. Scarlett’s mom had wanted her to give the baby up for adoption because she was also a teen mother and knew how hard it would be for her. Studies show daughter’s from teen moms are three times more likely to became a teen mom too.
Being raised in US we are taught to act in different ways depending on the scenario. Often many behaviors and lessons are learned through experiencing everyday life . Sociology has become a way to understand and theorize how factors effect society and how usually it come to be. There are ways in which particular learned behaviors play out differently for example learning to tie shoes compared to learning to rob someone. It is often thought that behaviors are learned.
Teenage parenthood is theorized as a social problem that involves a greater than average risk of being poor, unemployed and isolated. Studies have confirmed the association between socioeconomic disadvantage and teenage pregnancy and between social inequality and high teen pregnancy rates. Social exclusion is a contested term that goes beyond a concept of non-participation due to poverty of a concept of individuals or groups being shut out from society for reasons of multiple disadvantages, including: discrimination, chronic illnesses, geographical locations and cultural
According to the Dictionary, Sociology is defined as the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society. This means that people are willing to study social problems throughout the world and the society that they live in. In my life, I deal with my social class, Gender, Race, Religion, and the time I was born. Because of who I am, I definitely have been a part of a different upbringing and lifestyle that many sociologist may find interesting.
Teen pregnancy is becoming more common. According to 94% of US adults,“Teen motherhood is considered ‘a bad thing for our society’” (Mollborn). This explains how unprepared teens are and how little they know about the choices they are making. Also, how little information is known.
How does teenage pregnancy affect pregnant teenagers and their local communities? 1.3 Hypothesis
In today’s modern society, everyone is largely affected by society. From multiple social institutions like the government and economy for instance or even the effects of education and mass media; these all play a huge role in an individual’s relationship, behavior, and actions in their society. For an individual to understand things like a “culture” or why every society has a ‘social class hierarchy,’ they will be directed to “Sociology”. Sociology is the systematic study of the structures of human society and social interaction. Sociology attempts to understand how things like society, social events, interactions, and patterns influence the way humans think, act, and feel.
Teen pregnancy is a communal problem, a family problem, and a personal problem all rolled into one. It frequently goes hand in hand with premarital sex. Problems come when the news needs to breach each parent’s party. After which, these impressions simply serve no purpose but to put them off, and deduce to mere nuisance to them when the truth of their situation slowly sinks in. How do they provide for the child if their parents cut them short financially?
Sociology is the scientific study of human social relationships and interactions. Sociology 's subject matter is diverse. Subject matter for sociology ranges from the micro level of an individual and interaction to the macro level of systems and the social structure. At the society level, sociology examines and explains matters like crime and law, poverty and wealth, prejudice and discrimination, schools and education, business firms, urban community, and social movements. We can see these subject matters crystal clear as sociology ranges from crime to religion, from the family to the state, from the divisions of race and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture and from social stability to radical change in whole societies.
