What role does friendship and camaraderie play in the novel? In what ways is it helpful/harmful to the characters in AQWF?
A. Page 274-275. Used as a coping tool for the loneliness and despair of war. Helpful because it gives the characters something to rely on throughout the battles, as a feeling of safety, comfort, and assurance.
B. Page 295. One of the things worth fighting for. After the deaths of all his friends, Paul admits in loneliness he has nothing else to lose. Helpful as it provides inspiration and confidence, but also really harmful as the loss of friendship and hurt mentally.

B. Page 275. Little flames = soldiers. Views war from the standpoint of the soldier. Sympathizes the bad situations the soldiers are put through.
Is killing necessary for peace to occur?
A. It isn’t. Cold War, for example, was a 44 year span of political and social tension between two sides, the Eastern and Western Bloc, that were both heavily armed in preparation for a possible all-out nuke off. However, instead of any major regional battles, dominance was expressed through proxy wars, psychological warfare, propaganda, espionage, sports rivalries, and the Space Race.
B. Page 41. Kropp’s idea of a festival of generals beating each other could actually work efficiently, according to history. As shown in the Cold War, competitions other than killing is a possible way to show dominance and achieve peace without death.
C. Sun Tzu - “The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.”

Although Remarque is surely biased as a discharged and wounded veteran, war is still pretty awful. General William Tecumseh Sherman, criticized for his harsh policies in the Civil War - “I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.” Dwight Eisenhower - “I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.”
Can and should war be prevented?
A. A war should always be prevented if it can, as they always prove to be disastrous and casualty-stricken. However, I don’t think it’s actually possible to prevent war in the first place. Raul Castro - “Preventing a war is tantamount to winning a war.”
B. Page 202-205. The soldiers review that though both the French and German wish to defend their homeland, yet they still attack each other. They say that the way is pretty useless for the middle class citizens who want no trouble between the countries, but they realize that there must be some people to whom the war is useful for. That being said, there are always one group of people who wish to assert military dominance through killing. It is simply in their nature, and is essentially irremovable. It is in humankind to fight for survival, to come out on top, and to be the best. Those aspects will always be in humans, and thus war can’t be completely
The outcomes of war can sometimes be positive and sometimes negative. In My brother Sam is Dead the authors, James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier, are trying to tell you that war can be good like Patriots fighting for our freedom. Since WWII had already passed we get the advantage of knowing that the patriots won and gained freedom. However at the time people didn’t know if their sacrifices will be actually worth it. War shouldn't be considered a mandatory action even if we may win because there’s still the lives being taken because of it, children killed by men with guns in their hands.
Since the beginning of time, war has been practiced for numerous reasons ultimately to benefit a group of people or nations. But, when war divides the world into two different sides with the capability to destroy faster than we can create, it makes us question, is war really worth it? With the aftermath of World War One, people we’re still divided, but for a different reason, after a war with a catastrophic amount of deaths we had militarists advocating to fight and pacifists demanding peace. The two sources I have used from this essay comes from a European militarist, Friedrich Von Bernhardi with his book “War a Biological Necessity” and United States pacifists, William James, in his book “Moral Equivalent of War”. Therefore this essay will review the
Paul describes the degeneration and mental instability of the soldiers. Just before his comrade Detering deserts, Paul states, “We are little flames poorly sheltered by frail walls against the storm of dissolution and madness, in which we flicker and sometimes almost go out” (Remarque 275). Traditionally, light is symbolic of hope. Remarque uses metaphors to compare the soldiers to “little flames”, the inclusion of “little” describes that their flames were much bigger, but war is extinguished most of it.
War may bring freedom and prosperity, but not without the cost of killing the innocent and bringing misery and sorrow into the
When talking about war, there are many books with few answers to what war truly is. Barbara Ehrenreich brings forth not only the possibilities towards understanding war but also the passion people from history have had towards it. One key issue she brings to light is humanities love for war, so much so that people would use excuses like holy wars to justify their need to fight in a war. She declares that war is as muddled as the issue of diseases and where diseases came from around 200 years ago. More so than that she even goes further on to state that these rituals that date back to prehistoric times are the cause of human nature during times of war rather than human instinct.
War Is Futile War is blood, gore, killing, and sadness. During the book, My Brother Sam Is Dead the authors Collier and Collier hint that war is horrendous. For example Colonel Read said,”War isn't fair”(Collier and Collier 200). This quote shows that you don’t get to choose who dies and who doesn’t. Also, war makes it harder on everyone involved.
War not only took lives but also took something deeper that will affect him for the rest of his life. He seems to be anti-war as he heavily emphasizes
However, when they were sent out into the midst of the war many of them realised the misconceptions they had and were led to believe. They became disillusioned as they realized that the war was much more brutal and horrific than they had previously believed. In All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Remarque effectively comments on the horrors of war from Paul’s perspective, especially when Paul comments on injuries the soldiers endure and witness by stating “We see men go on living with the top of their skulls missing; we see soldiers go on running when both their feet have been shot away…Another man…with his guts spilling out over his hands as he holds them in.” (Remarque,
This demonstrates how much these soldiers depend and need one another. In the novel it says, “Our only comfort is the steady breathing of our comrades asleep, and thus we wait for the morning” (Remarque 275). I imagine being in a dangerous environment such as an ongoing war it would be difficult to find comfort. However, Paul knowing his comrades are alive and getting some rest brings him comfort.
Is War Even Worth it “Anyone who thinks must think of the next war as they would of suicide. ”-Eleanor Roosevelt. In My Brother Sam is Dead the authors clearly show; their opinion about war throughout the novel.
The world has been prospering from war for a long time. But, we do not always see the problems it causes. For instance, it tears families apart, it clashes generations, and finally it shows us principal versus reality. So, if war brings more bad things than good it defeats the purpose of even having a war in the first place. The authors of My Brother Sam is Dead also feels that war is pointless and unnecessary.
All of the main characters fight for friendship even if they do so in different ways and for different reasons. All of them feel in need of someone to talk to if it is about science, about what horrible things one has done or about being different and alone. Another feature is the loss of friendship in all cases. Victor loses his friends to death, and so does Walton while the creature never really “fulfilled his dream of being anyone’s true friend” (Jeray 69). This way the novel not only shows the importance of friendship and having companions but also the possible consequences of either being rejected by everyone or of losing beloved people partly even due to own
“War is hell”, said General William Sherman, where young men have to kill others in order to survive. War is a concept known throughout the ages, transitioning from sword fighting in the Iliad, to modern warfare in Iraq. War is destroyer of normalcy, ruining families and cities. Kevin Power’s main character in The Yellow Birds, Private Bartle, would certainly agree with the sentiment, having experienced the war in Iraq. However, Hector from the Iliad would argue that war offered a way for someone to forge their legacy.
War, what exactly is it? To begin with, the stimulus I have chosen is “War brings out the best and the worst of us.” As most of you are well aware, war is when there is armed conflict between different nations or groups. During this period various unethical things occur, such as murder or torture. However, good things can also be done, such as: protecting the lives of loved ones.
The Art of War can only be mastered by those with virtue.
