Soft Power and the Olympics Soft power is used for different motives for a specific purpose. Soft power influences other nations by using their standards as a motive for a change. Over the past decades after the split of North and South Korea, North Korea has managed to be segregated. The years the Kim family have ruled might be the most the civilization has been outcaste from the rest of the countries. Aside from that only a few details have emerged into that country making it much harder to destabilized the regime. Soft power is mostly used in comparison to economic power. It not only saves human lives and perhaps money it is also more prone to have the effect strived for. For this year’s Olympics, South Korea is hosting them. For everyone’s surprise North Korea will be sending their athletes to the south of Korea. Although Kim Jon-un is not attending his sister Kim Yo-jong is there to support their athletes and represent their country. However, most news media as well as citizens have not been …show more content…
Like Garry Kasparov and Thor Halvorssen writers at The Washington Post mention this year’s Olympic games have been in the eyes of politics instead of the actual games. The writers mentioned are not content with the way media like CNN or even ABC have portrayed the country everyone knows about. Mentioning how much coverage in portraying a new image of being a good country. Kim Yo-jong was good usage of soft power according to Max Jaeger. Showing up at the Olympics with a face not showing the representation of a ‘brutal regime’ and just by being a woman hypnotized the audience into forgetting who she really represents. There was no footage of what she spoke or said to anyone aside from what Kim Jong-un sent her to say to President Moon. However, not much needed to be said when people can see the influence she is having on the south
According to Doc 4 multiple corporations invested in the South Korean olympics which are said to make a massive sum of money because of said investments. One other part of the Document is that it states that the economical standpoint of the olympics is completely neutral. Many businesses ignore the politics of the countries and instead focus on gaining a profit. Another document that shows how the olympics changed is how the broadcasting rights in Doc 8 increase for every olympic game, showing the importance of the olympics rising every year. The final document showing a divide in the olympics due to politics is Doc 9.

The Philosophical Control in North Korea In the year 1903, English novelist, journalist and author Eric Arthur Blair was born, though better known today by his pen name, George Orwell. Orwell may be best known for his piece, 1984, written in the year 1949 and about the possible struggles that man will face through the current trends in time. 1984 was heavily influenced by the events of World War II, and the political and military figureheads such as Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, along with groups and events like the Hitler youth or the Stalin purges. Those were some connections to the real world prior to the writing of 1984, but what about after the publication of the novel?
In this mural “Going to the Olympics” by Frank Romero I see five cars that have heart above each one, on top of that it has 5 other objects that each has their own meaning. The meaning of the cars probably tells us that having a car feels cool and that we used it not only to get to places, but to feel the car and be a part of it. The other five symbols which is located on top of the cars shows what Los Angeles represents from the Goodyear blimp to mail stamps to horse riding, each has their own meaning to what makes Los Angeles great. Last the palm tree and the heart, in Los Angeles you will see a lot palm tree beside the road as you cruise on through Los Angeles you will take notice this beautiful palm trees. Finally the city of Los Angeles has lots to offer and this mural shows exactly what Los Angeles really is.
North Korea is a mysterious place to outsiders but from the inside it may seem normal because the people have no sense of reality or awareness. In the novel 1984 a made up character named ‘Big Brother’ is much like Kim Jong-Un in our world. There are two parties outer and inner and the inner parties consist of people from the inside and the wealthier class unlike the outer witch holds the middle class. The outer party of 1984 worship Big Brother and most are forced to because they are being watched by spies and telescreens (surveillance systems). North Korea is very similar to 1984 due to the constant surveillance and the cult of personality.
Symbolic interaction derives from people’s perspectives and human interpretation of society and what is acceptable by common means. This theory accounts for the many relations with our environment and how they symbolically shape our behaviors. If a behavior has been labeled by the majority as criminal, than it will become an understood norm that it will be dealt with as such. North Korea strives in superiority and distinction, which could mean viewing their citizens as weak, is intolerable. A nation that needs uniting by all cannot falter and choose death as the way out before their religion and governmental rulings.
In North Korea, being in the Mass Games is a huge accomplishment. You train for hours on end so you will look exactly the same, as if you are becoming one. Even the military is so disciplined that they look exactly the same. But, the people in North Korea are different from the citizens in 1984 because they still have individual personalities. The Party convinces these people to all believe the same ideas and have the same opinions.
Sochi Olympics Controversy or the Respatialization of (Gay) Social Life by Brindusa Ioana Nastasa Introduction Many theorists and academics have tried to define the concept of globalization over the past 30 years or so. However, there is an ongoing debate on what the exact definition is. This essay will look at the definitions put forward by sociologist, Ulrich Beck, and professor of politics and international relations, Jan Aart Scholte, and apply their views to the media reporting of the Sochi Olympics and the boycott caused by the anti-gay propaganda ban in Russia.

(Saxonberg 331) According to, Mc EachErn, North Korea uses particularly cruel repression as a check on ideological decline to keep its hold on power, but it has not shifted to a simple, personalistic rule where repression is the cornerstone of regime
Kim Jong Un’s Political Track Record There is no much change since Kim Jong Un came into power. North Korea does not experience radical change. “Military first” policy is still put into power. Economic policy is centered to carry military’s interests and fulfilled the interest of the single party.
