3. Overview of the Organization:
The first SOS Children’s village was established in 1949 in Austria by Herman Gmenier. The purpose of forming this village was to help orphan children by building families which were loving and communities which were supportive of these kids. The first SOS village was a success which impressed the world and SOS children villages began to grow. Today after nearly 66 years of its foundation, because of the support of the donors, SOS Children’s Village International is working in about 134 countries around the world. There were more than 200 SOS Children’s Villages and as many youth houses, social centers, vocational centers, kindergartens, hospital mother and child centers. In 1887, June 23rd that was the birthday of Dr. Herman Gmeiner was declared to be the International SOS day.
In 1995 SOS Children Villages International got UN status. It was now an “ NGO in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.” In 2002 SOS Children’s Village International was given the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian prize.
In 2005 and 2010 after the Tsunami disaster and after the Haiti earthquake, SOS was one of the world organizations that started emergency relief and reconstruction programs in the disaster torn

3.1.1 SOS IN PAKISTAN:
The capital city of Punjab, Lahore was the first place in Pakistan where an SOS Children’s village was established. For building this village funds were provided by SOS associations in Denmark and Norway. Ten acre land on the Feroze Pur Road was allotted by the Punjab government for the village. Mrs. Souriya Anwar was lady leading the project in Pakistan. In April 1977 , after two years of construction, it was opened by the then President of Pakistan Chaudhry Fazal Elahi.
In 1982 a village in Dhodial was built. Now there are SOS villagers operating twelve cities across of Pakistan namely, Lahore, Dhodial, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Jamshoro, Quetta, Muzaffarabad, Sialkot, Islamabad and Multan.
SOS Children’s Village of Pakistan is affiliated with SOS Kinderdorf International. Land for all villages was allotted by the concerned provincial governments, As far as financial matters are concerned, donations from the public run these villages.

This donation became the largest tsunami relief donation ever received by UNICEF from a faith-based organization. Through his many charitable works, T.D. “Kids at Hope” has become a part of the Herndon High School’s framework for all students and the entire staff. Kids at Hope is “a strategic, cultural framework designed to engage entire communities to support success for all children, no exceptions”. It is a cultural framework with strategies based on three leading principles and practices: We Believe, We Connect and We Time Travel. The “We Connect” component of Kids at Hope supports the notion that as long as children have meaningful and sustainable relationship with caring adults they will be successful. Those caring adults are called the ACES.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is an organization that tries to impact the youth across the country by giving them a positive role model that helps guide them in the right direction. In their mission, Big Brothers Big Sisters states that it is their goal to “provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationship that change their lives for the better, forever.” A child who participates in the program is called a “little” and they are given a “big”, and this “big” is supposed to influence their life in a positive way by creating a strong and lasting support system. It is important for children in low socioeconomic environments and single parent homes to have someone to encourage their passions
Everyday the children of Afghanistan can’t go to school. Instead they they have to go out and get water for their families and to sell. The Text “The Plight of Afghan’s Child Water Carriers” written by Sayeaed Jan Sabwoon and the video “For Afghan Kids Hauling Water Is A Living” by Zarif Nazar have many similarities and differences. The video “For Afghan Kids, Hauling Water Is A Living” Zarif Nazar focuses on using visual to show what the kids teaching up and down broken and dangerous steps carrying buckets of water up on their heads while helping their donkeys too. The video also uses the children speaking in their native language and using english subtitles.

In 2010 a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, killing hundreds of thousands and leaving millions homeless. This earthquake was one of the worst humanitarian disasters of all time. After this devastating event the UN and others helped rebuild Haiti by coming up with many solutions, you will see some worked and others didn’t. On January, 10 , our president, Barack Obama announced that America would one of the quickest and largest contributor to help Haiti in their time of need.

A family of seven living in El Salvador barely eats since their father only earns six dollars a month. One of the children, Rocio, suffers from anemia, however, when Feed My Starving Children stepped in, her life changed. Now, she helps her mother fetch water and is happy because she can carry the jugs on her own. This is just one case of how Feed My Starving Children has influenced and changed lives. My charity I chose not only feeds those who are in need of nutrition, but they also give hope and happiness to the families and people they help.

Our group has decided to volunteer with Feed My Starving Children(FMSC) which was founded in 1987. Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is a Christian non-profit organization that provides nutritionally complete meals specifically formulated for malnourished children. Its mission is to feed God’s starving children in different countries who are hungry in body and spirit. Their process is simple. Donations from people fund the meal ingredients and volunteers hand-pack the meals.

There are many issues regarding the welfare of children from all over the world. Children have been repeatedly impacted by wars and conflicts in their countries. Moreover, many children from some areas do not have access to their rights such as education and health and have to suffer from discrimination, violence, abuse and sexual and economic exploitation. After the World War II, Children from all over Europe had to suffer the aftermath of the war. This is when the United Nations stepped in and created United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, or as today’s shorter term, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in December 1946 with the sole purpose to lessen the suffering by providing foods, clothing and health care.
