The first is the leak of DeLome Letter from Spanish minister in Washington, Dupuy du Lome to the press. This letter criticized President McKinley for being “weak” and labelled him as a “would-be politician” and a “jingoist” . This letter was considered an insult to the president and the nation and further outraged the Americans toward Spain. The second immediate cause is the explosion of U.S.S Maine in Havana harbor which killed 2 officers and 258 crewmen. Even though the culprit behind this was unknown, the Yellow Journalism had successfully shaped public opinions to blame Spain for this incident and to demand the war with Spain.
In 1890 the U.S. went into war with spain for many reason for example. yellow journalism, imperialism and the sinking of the Maine is what caused the American population to want to go to war with Spain. yellow journalism is what got the rage in the american public. When the U.S.S. Maine was sunk word spread fast and the people were quick to blame the Spanish.
The main problems that caused the Spanish-American War was the King and Queen clinged to Cuba and didn’t want to let go, that was a major issue for Cuba considering they were like us in 1776, wanted freedom to run their own country in their own way. Americans were outraged and wanted to get Spain out of American air, they refused to leave cuba. which caused major drama and two newspaper companies to use it as a competition to get more readers. The Maine, the U.S. battleship had been sent for citizens if any trouble had came about. The ship ended up exploding, and many people were killed.
Lastly with so many Americans losing their lives America officially joined World War II. After Japan had all but openly declared war on America, American citizens and military personnel were in an uproar. To add on to that unquenchable fury not only did Japanese Imperial Navy attack Pearl Harbor it also attacked all of the american outposts in the Pacific. After the japanese attacks on the american outposts Japan occupied all of the formerly american protected territory. Even more anger formed from the fact that japanese prison camps were notoriously cruel to the prisoners incarcerated therein.
But secretly the Cubans used American ports to carry arms and supplies to keep some people alive. The Spanish governor tried to stop the Americans from helping the Cubans but the Americans had too much sympathy for the Cubans. On January 5, 1898, the American ship the Maine was anchored in Havana Harbor. On February 15, she was destroyed by an explosion. People claimed that the Maine was destroyed by a mine, a Spanish ship.
It killed two hundred and sixty American crew members. The American public was outraged. The American Yellow Press released, “Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain!” Most Americans believed it was Spain’s fault for the explosion. It created tension between America and Spain.
In 1112 however, things began to change and the Bishop’s greed led him to seek power once more. Paying the king 300 more livres than the Burghers, he had the seal revoked from the commune and thus, taken out of legitimate power. This attempt at eliminating corruption in the church was done by the use of physical violence, and did not work out as well as the Burghers (organizers) had anticipated. The Burghers assembled with fierce anger, and forty of them swore by oath to kill the bishop and all those who had aided him to destroy the commune. The people swiftly caught on and a few days later, the Bishop Gaudri was thrown into the street and killed in minutes.
The American Anti-Imperialist League was an organization established in 1898, to battle the American takeover of the Philippines as an isolated area. The Spanish-American War and the U.S. colonial occupation of the Philippines led to the greatest American anti-war movement up until that time. The growth of the Anti-Imperialist League from a small group of intellectuals and businessmen in Boston to a large nationwide movement was a reaction to the mounting casualties in the Philippine War. The major reason why the American Anti-Imperialist League opposed the conquest of the Philippines was that the Philippine War was bloodier. Philippines lost up to 600,000 dead in the war, so letters were arriving in the U.S. from American troops indicating
The American society knows Pearl Harbor as Japanese planes attacking the United State Naval Base in Hawaii Territory on December 7, 1941. This bombing killed more than 2,300 Americans and completely destroyed the American battleship U.S.S. This tragic occurrence not only negatively affected the United States, but also affected many countries and relationships among countries. Next order of businesses for MacArthur was to leave and travel to Australia to take command of Pacific operations. America began stopping provide valuable resources to Japan after finding out that they wanted to expand, which the Americans were not happy about.
(Hutson, “America as a Religious Refuge: The Seventeenth Century”) As I mentioned before, King Phillip II was angered because his ships were being plundered by English men. So he began to assemble his fleet of 130 ships with 30,000 men aboard called the Spanish Armada. England defeated the Spanish Armada which “…ensured England’s naval dominance in the North Atlantic and built their confidence and their ambition in the New World” (“The First English Settlements”). And France on the other hand, was basically bankrupt and disorganized because of the French Revolution. So France’s presence was not as strong as England’s was.
The stories scared the americans and basically made them scream for war against spain. While the Spanish, Cuban and american diplomats had meetings trying to solve this peacefully, Maine was sailing into the harbor at Havana, Cuba. Maine was a U.S. battle ship. The ship had exploded and killed a bunch of americans which then blew up the U.S. with fiery. People mocked the president until he organized and attack.
My dad often tells me of how the civil war killed some of his friends and family and left others destitute. It also forced him to take his wife and child to America. The Roman civil war had a similar effect killing hundreds of thousands and leading to the autocratic Roman Empire. Text-to-Text: Fall of Rome In Classical Civilization Rome and Aspects of Western Civilization the authors talks about how Rome fell and the causes of that fall. They both say it fell not because of barbarians but due to self rot, inflation, and corruption.Barbarians were just the nail in the coffin.
Tuesday morning of September 11, 2001, United States awakened to the tragic events occurring in New York City. The nation came to a stop as hijacked planes collided into the country’s beloved Twin Towers, crumbling down within the matter of seconds. 15 years ago, the United States faced a major terrorist attack, with over 3,000 deaths and evidently bringing out the rage within the citizens. However, targets of revenge for this situation are faced by Sikh Americans, who still experience discrimination with their physical appearance in the nation today. Within the United States, the media limits the coverage Sikh Americans experience on a daily basis, and essentially undermining the discrimination that many of them still face today.
