Spanking is a form of discipline that parents use towards their children when they are doing something that is deviant. However there are both pros and cons when it comes to spanking a child. A study done by Murray Strauss was conducted to see if spanking increased antisocial behavior in children. A total of 807 mothers, with children ages 6 to 9, were chosen in the study (Strauss, Sugarman, & Giles-Sims, 1997). The results showed that 45% of mothers that spank their children do it around 2.1 times a week (Strauss, Sugarman, & Giles-Sims, 1997).
Of course, once the child is a little older they state that spanking should only be used if they are putting themselves or others in danger (206). Spanking should not be used to hurt your child, but only as a physical intervention (video). When you do spank your child, it is very important to explain to them why they are being punished (206). This is to ensure that the child knows why they are in trouble and, hopefully, keep them from doing it again. As stated earlier, most African Americans use spanking as punishment.
My feelings regarding spankings are inappropriate because it models aggressive behavior in young children. 8. Spankings should be administered with care. 9. Punishments and violence in child education remain as something that never left humanity since the beginning of the age. Parents ordinarily conducts punishments, even incorporating violence on it for the right cause. Moreover, in a majority of cultures and history, the common belief incites that punishments must act as the absolute way of disciplining and raising a child right. In the article “No Spanking, No Time-out, No Problems”, Olga Khazan uses many rhetorical strategies to support and persuade her audience. That traditional punishment methods of parents will not change a child’s/children’s unruly behavior overall, but positive reinforcement will increase the chances of better behavior not only now, but in the future as well. “Positive reinforcement is the presentation of a pleasurable consequence following a behavior” (Craighead). This twist to traditional discipline teaches children to work towards a resolution instead of teaching them to lean toward violence. “For example, the way that parents discipline their children is how children discipline their peers” (Khazan).
The reason for that, is because Straus believes in never spanking a child, he just believes in taking away privileges. I support his conclusion because, I do not think spanking solves anything. Also, not all the time, but most of the time it could cause negative effects on a child, such as confusion between love with violence. However, not only can spanking cause psychical problems, but emotional problems as well. 2.
From my own personal experiences, some unruly children only respect a firm spanking with the law prohibiting this practice of parenting it can cause children to go down the wrong path because they don’t have the proper respect for their parents which is where children are supposed to learn respect for an authoritative figure. To me spanking should be the last thing a parent need to use as a punishment. I do occasionally spank my children, but only after I have tried everything else (i.e multiple warnings, time outs , and loose privileges). However, as my children gets older I am noticing that I am spanking them less because they are getting to the age where I can talk to them and reason with them more. As a child I was spanked quite often, mostly by my teacher. I grew up in a country where teachers are free to spank children in classrooms whenever they feel the need to.
As mentioned previously, a significant number of parents emphasize the use of punishment to ensure total obedience and submission of the child. Most overprotective parents discipline their child through physical punishment and only a few acknowledge the use of explaining and reasoning with the child. In the article Grogan-Kaylor states “The upshot of the study is that spanking increases the likelihood of a wide variety of undesired outcomes for children. Spanking thus does the opposite of what parents usually want it to do.” Not only did Gershoff and Grogan-Kaylor test on children but also on long-term effects among adults who were also spanked as a child. This showed that the more they were spanked, the more likely they experienced mental health problems or behavior problems. Growing up my parents ran a daycare in(at) our house so I was always surrounded by children (the good and the bad). My parents were the type who had no problem enforcing physical punishments such as spanking, the flick of the hand, a pop on the mouth, etc. All these punishments are within the definition of acceptable punishment as stated by Oklahoma law (qtd. ---). They practiced this on me, my siblings, and the daycare kids (with parental consent).

Many people think that the reason for this is easily described as “if you hold the reins too tight, the horse will buck.” Over punishing a child can be a bad thing, it will make the child want to retaliate more so than if one were to cut a little slack. However, under punishing a child can be bad as well, not teaching a child right from wrong can majorly increase the odds of the child doing the wrong thing. Reasons that parents give for spanking their children are to make children listen better, and to encourage better behavior, especially to put a stop to children's aggressive behaviors. Research shows, however, that spanking, or indeed any form of physical punishment, tends to have the opposite effect.
As they grow up to a certain age, kids might start smoking, sneak out of the house and do other immoral meretricious actions as an outcome to get even with their family for previously spanking them. Some brats that are daily spanked may even get to the point where they would want to retaliate from the person that is usually spanking them. Spanking a kid may also affect a kid’s education and mean of interaction in a society. Researchers and psychologist point that kids being spanked may develop learning disorder, difficulties to stay focused, and lack creativity.
