Many people cannot remember their lives before smartphones. Children around 10 years old are often influenced by their peers’ actions and the luxuries they have, regardless of whether they need it or not. Being born in a generation where smartphones are considered to be very vital to a child’s success, it is understandable why this could be an issue for parents. However, children that are 10 years old or younger do not need this form of responsibility. Kids under the age of 10 shouldn’t be given smartphones due to the ways phones are critical to healthy social and physical development, detrimental to communication skills, and the distractions they cause.

Jane E. Brody, a personal health columnist, writes that she wonders and fears that, “we are turning into digital robots. Will future generations know how to converse with one another face to face?”, showing how people are becoming dependent on the luxury of communicating with someone through a screen whom they have never talked to face-to-face before (Brody 3). Seeing how they can communicate with anyone they want at any time, children are going to take advantage of this indulgence. They are going to get into the habit of only communicating with people through their phone screens and eventually forget what it’s like to introduce themselves to someone and begin a conversation with a stranger in person, which is essential in life. In Stephanie Olsen’s article, “When to Buy Your Child a Cellphone”, The Pew Study found that, “half of 12- to 17-year-olds sent 50 text messages a day and texted their friends more than they talked to them on the phone or even face to face,” showing how this is a common pattern in teens and young adults (Olsen 2). Even teenagers who are around the age of driving and have an easier way of transportation and seeing people face-to-face struggle with communication outside of a phone. If a child younger than this, such as a 10 year old, was given a smartphone to communicate with other people, they would develop the dependency of communicating with people through a screen rather than in person at an earlier age. Who doesn’t check their phone constantly throughout the day? What if your phone was a small piece of metal in your head? In this story it is, a chip called the “feed” is inserted into everyone’s head. On the feed people can shop, texted, watch movies, get news, and best of all make personal choices for the users. In Feed by M.T. Anderson he suggests the role of technology affects the way people communicate with others cause by negative learning opportunities at school, reducing what choices people make, and distracts people.
In recent discussions of smartphones, a controversial issue has been how the excessive use of smartphones are affecting the adolescents of this generation. Jean M. Twenge argues in her article, “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” that the redundant use of these gadgets along with social media use is in fact detrimental to the current and upcoming generations. My experience using Snapchat, Instagram, and other applications on my smartphone supports Twenge’s stance because the excessive use of these applications has caused me to feel melancholic. According to Twenge, “Psychologically, however, they (iGens) are more vulnerable than Millennials were: Rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011.
In Nicholas Carr’s article, “How Smartphones Hijack Our Minds” (November 10, 2017) Carr discusses the implications of allowing our smartphones to have such a huge effect on our lives. Smartphones serve many purposes, and have created massive societal effects throughout the world despite being introduced roughly only two decades ago. One can converse with anyone in the world at any given moment, they can watch any television show they want, and they can receive alerts so they no longer have to put effort into remembering things themselves. However, with so much control over people’s own lives, one begins to wonder about the negative consequences of the smartphones themselves.
Around 72% of parents say that they feel as if they have a good handle on technology and they are a good role model for their child when it comes to using it (Stress in America, 2017). Six in ten of those parent admitted that they were also “glued” to their phones as well, or constantly checking emails (Stress in America, 2017). Turkle states that, “the mere presence of a phone on a table between them (two people) or in the periphery of their vision changes both what they talk about and the degree of connection they feel.” While this may be true, along with the other studies on how technology is detrimental to society, there as also positives aspects that contribute to society as well. “It is not about giving our phones but about using them with greater intention” (Turkle). This quote by Turkle embodies how I feel about the technology debate and the more new technology and phones have developed the more we have analyzed whether or not they are good for our society, and at what age kids should use them.
There is really no limit to the things that can be done on a smartphone. Yet, with all this information streaming through our population’s mind, no knowledge or substance is gained. Wortham swears by apps and is grateful that she can communicate with her boyfriend who is three thousand miles away. Yet some may challenge the view that Social Media apps are a reliable and effective method of communicating, Sherry Turkle stresses people are substituting online communication for face-to-face interaction. Although Turkle may only seem of concern to only a small group of people, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about the negative effects social media can have on people. In her eyes, nothing can replace person-to-person communication.
Since social media came around , there’s have been a decrease in real-life conversations , More people are building a relationship online and drifting away from the real world. You get easily distracted when you are on your phone. Also technology causes you to miss out on your sleep and losing sleep have negative effects on your brain.

Furthermore, I have personally dealt with this issue myself back when I did not have a phone. I would be constantly running back and forth to the school office just to tell my parents that I have a school activity that I had to attend, or if I got lost in a mall I had no other option but to look for them myself and that would take hours. Moreover, when I did get my phone both my parents and I had a way to communicate with each other. Therefore, buying your child a phone is a key way to boost your communication with the child.
