Many topics have been covered through this semester of Com 101 dealing with public speaking. Some of the topics include: speech anxiety, plagiarism, and abusive language. All three of those topics can relate to The Office in one or more ways. The first topic, speech anxiety can be caused by more than one reason. One reason speech anxiety can be caused is by a bad experience in front of a group of people. Another way speech anxiety is caused is by not being positive to oneself. In The Office, Dwight Schrute tells a story. His story involved himself in front of a group of people at a spelling bee. Dwight was in the final round and misspelled the word “failure”. He never let that moment go, and now when it comes to being in front of a group of people, he gets speech anxiety. Another reason mentioned before that causes speech anxiety is not being positive to oneself. There is a scene shortly after the spelling bee story that Dwight says to Michael, “I can’t do this.” Michael then replies with, “That’s because you’re incapable of doing it. Because you don’t know how to. Because you have no skills.” Michael’s response to Dwight only made Dwight’s speech anxiety worse because it is not helping Dwight stay positive. On the other hand, Jim Halpert tries to motivate Dwight saying that he majored in public speaking, and told him …show more content…
One type of plagiarism that was in The Office is patchwork plagiarism. Patchwork plagiarism is when a person takes someone else’s work and alters some of the words make it sound like it is the person’s original work. Jim Halpert print out a speech from Benito Mussolini’s and “wrote up a few talking points” from Mussolini’s speech for Dwight to say in his speech. If Dwight used any of the “talking points” given to him from Jim, that would be patchwork plagiarism, because Jim took those points from Mussolini’s
All Speeches have there ups and down Its how you present it that really matters. If you have an organized speech your speech will present itself because it will flow out naturally. Making sure that you have constant eye contact with the audience will help sound you more credible. Most importantly making sure that the topic that you have chosen makes sense to what you are doing. While listening to the current even speech that Napoleon Dynamite did and the speech that SpongeBob Square Pants did it is clear that one has practiced more and demonstrated better speech concepts.
Plagiarism is found everywhere in real life with new reports of it happening day by day. Plagiarism is an issue of integrity and honesty.
What I did to prepare for my informative speech was I would go through my speech in my head or just think about what I was going to say. Other things I did to prepare was I did all the required things like the outline and power point, I also did things like making note cards so when I went up there I knew what I wanted or needed to say. I felt a little nervous at first when I went up in front of the class, but as I started my nerves calmed down and then it became easy to just talk to everyone. I started to relax more and I didn’t worry about what I said as much and then I started to rely more on what I knew and I didn’t need my note cards as much.
Through her writing, Janice Fabro describes how plagiarism contains both direct and indirect negative outcomes. Direct effects of plagiarism include failure in a class, but
This was evident through the feedback that he received from the audience, and how smoothly the speech seemed to flow. Along with his speaking sytle, Mike used a variety of supports as well including: narratives, statistics, explanations, and testimonies. He switched between these types of supports throughout the speech, and used each of them very effectively. On the other hand, there was one weakness towards the end of the speech, when it appeared that he tried to call his audience to action by telling them to get back to work. If this was the case, it appeared more humorous than serious, and did not help to conclude his
3.Choose one aspect of your presentation and tell me how you will work to improve it for your next presentation. Be concrete. Offer suggestions that you will use for improvement. I always get anxious before giving any speech or presentation. I may not maintain eye contact with the audience to cop up with my anxiety.

For my Informative Speech in COMM 210, I wanted to inform my class on my workplace, Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari. The specific purpose of my speech was for my audience to know the past, present, and achievements of this theme park by the end of my speech. I feel I achieve this pretty well. For this speech, I was much more comfortable in front of the class. This allowed me to keep it together and not let my nerves get to the best of me.
The speech presented by Megan Washington concerns the issue of the experience that the people who stutter have to get through. On her own example, she shows how easy it might be to cope with the problems arising during the public speaking. She tells about three ways how she could avoid revealing her problem, and all of them might be useful when presenting something before the large audience. With regard to this, the speaker tells that it is essential to overcome the fear of public speaking to become a successful speaker.
The first problem with my speech was time. Time caused my to become anxious, talk faster, and not clearly articulate my points to my audience. During an informative speech, it is best to be clear and concise so the audience retains more information, but my speech was negatively impacted from my poor vocal delivery. Moreover, my speech lost credibility from my poorly executed citations. For each citation, I would either rush through where the information came from or mention the source at the end, which therefore decreased my overall
There it was again, that dreaded bullet point. Shakes and shivers rattled through my body each and every time it appeared. Like a stop sign on my road to success, it would bring me to a screeching halt. Without warning, it randomly emerged in every aspect of my life and caused great anxiety. Although it was not always on paper as a bullet point, in my mind it was like a bullet coming at me.
As students, presentations are something that is required in most classes yet, students do not see themselves as public speakers. Throughout high school and now in college, I have had to present material in 80 percent of the classes that I have taken. Presenting was, and still is something that I struggle with no matter how big or how small the group is that I am presenting to. I knew that Public Speaking was a required class for me so, rather than putting it off, I decided to go ahead and get it out of the was as soon as possible. Speaking in front of people is out of my comfort zone.
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION According to The Book of List, out of fourteen human fears, speaking in front of a group is the worst-surpassing even death which ranks seventh. However, speaking in public is an experience that many people go through at least once in their life. It is a necessary skill honed from pre-school to college in order to help students flourish in their chosen disciplines. By training how to effectively express opinions, suggestions and criticisms to other people, they can further contribute to the business or company they would apply to.
This assignment forced me to practice my public speaking abilities and I found out that I was not very efficient in taking hours to record a three-minute speech. Another area that I can improve upon is too look more relaxed while giving a public speech. One strength highlighted by
Fear of oral communication is found among people of all ages and in many walks of life. Two decades ago, Furmark (2002) found out public speaking was found to be the number one fear among, not only people with social phobia, but also the general population. A survey conducted by Witt (2006) confirmed the finding that public speaking was people's number one fear. Another survey in the United States of America (Ruscio, Brown, Chiu, Sareen, Stein, & Kessler, 2008) also concluded that public speaking ranked as people's number on (Clevenger Jr., 1959) fear, from among the subtypes of social phobia, such as writing, eating, or drinking while being watched. Study concerned with fear and anxiety about oral communication has been conducted under a variety of labels, most notably stage fright (Clevenger, 1959), reticence (Phillips, 1968), shyness (Zimbardo, 1977), audience sensitivity (Paivio, 1964), and communication apprehension (Horwitz, 2002; McCroskey, 1970, 1975).
