Incredible India! What is so incredible about my India? Is there more to us Indians other than brown skin; thick, long, black hair; and chocolaty eyes? Here I am to answer your questions; to tell you all about my beloved country, about our culture, our lifestyle… All about us! At almost every door step, one will see the ‘Swastik’ (a holy cross), a symbol of Lord Ganesha, the God of good beginnings. Alongside, there will be the sacred words ‘shubh’ and ‘labh’, which are the names of Lord Ganesha’s sons. This is a notion to please Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi, who are believed to bring prosperity. Hanging in a corner, may be a black string with few green chilies and one lemon at the bottom. This is the Indian way to keep away all evil from the house. And don’t be surprised if you see few pairs of shoes outside the house! When we visit our folk, shoes are always removed outside, preventing the dirt from soiling the home. On the door frame, there are ‘torans’ hung; usually made of marigold flowers and mango. They are hung as a welcoming gesture for the goddess of wealth, lakshmiji. They are there, also, to give a warm and friendly welcome to guests. Oh my, and having food at someone else’s house… You will definitely over-eat. We make sure that our guests are taken care of as kings.
