The one thing to manage when the going gets tough Throughout history people have overcome incredible hardship and prevailed against overwhelming odds. Churchill, Gandhi, Luther King, Mandela and Malala come easily to mind. It's easy to attribute their success to something rare and superior to the rest of us, but that would be a mistake. You can prevail as well, but only if you mangage this one thing. Your mood No matter the situation or time of day we're always in a mood. Bill Withers offered a lovely tip about how to create a lovely day. Then I look at you And the world's alright with me Just one look at you And I know it's gonna be A lovely day Unused Perspective Mood change often comes simply from changing how you look at something. “I complained about having no shoes, until I saw a man who had no legs.” The key to remember is that nothing out there changes. It's not the situation that changes, but simply how you look at it. Like Shackleton's men, or in my situation this morning, nothing had changed about my situation yet I felt completely different. I woke up feeling negative and an hour later I was positive. The only thing changed was my perspective about situation. The story in my head changed from "this is terrible" to "this is a challenge to enjoy." It might take you a while to become good at transforming bad moods to good ones or navigating from a bad one to a good one. I think it helps if you're connected to the work that you're doing and how it's helping more than just yourself. Idea is that it's how you look at things that make you feel however you
