to be an American has been long sought after by many. So many people die every year trying to get to the borders of our country. Why do people risk their lives to come here? People come to America to have a chance at freedom. The most important aspect of being an American and having freedom is the ability to protest the government in legal ways to have a voice.
In a speech that Learned Hand, a federal judge, gave he talked about the spirit of liberty. Hand proclaimed, “The spirit of liberty is the spirit which is not too sure that it is right; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which seeks to understand the mind of other men and women; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which weighs their interests alongside its own without bias;” What he …show more content…

was an American that really used his freedom to protest and speak out for what he knew was right. King’s ability to publicly protest to the world about civil rights is what it means to be an American. Martin Luther King Jr. knew that it was not right for any human being to be treated the way African Americans were being treated at this time. King was able to use his freedom to create a better America, which is why we have freedom in the first place.
Something to change about America...
If I had to make up one law that every American had to follow I would not make one up. I would not make up a law because since we already have basic rules to not infringe on anyone’s rights I feel like any rule that I would make up would violate someone’s agency. If I did make a rule though I feel like there would still be protests about how it should not be a law.
The 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, once stated, “My dream is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last best hope of earth.” America does need to work on being the “best country in the world”, but it does have some good things going for it like the freedom of speech and to protest. So many people around the world are murdered for speaking up for their personal rights as a human being, and that is why it is so important that we have this freedom to speak out. We need to protect our rights as Americans because other people do not have these
