ABSTRACT
Virtuous acts, acquirement of wealth, gratification of desire and final emancipation are important components of health according to ayurveda. Charaka samhita ancient medical text in Ayurveda literature describes not only physical and mental health but also the spiritual health. The concepts of spirituality in charaka samhita are influenced by the Upanishads where the aim of the life is moksha (emancipation). Charaka samhita sharira sthana is one of the unique thing where all the aspects of health i,e physical, mental and spiritual health has been explained and more importance is given for spiritual health like concept of chetana dhatu purusha, jeevaatman and paramatman, loka purusha samya, yoga and moksha. Purusha: That (Atman) which resides in the sharira is purusha which is also called as chetana dhatu3. Charaka sharira sthana starts with the different dimensions of purusha where chikitsa (treatment) has to be done. As stated in katopanishad about the superiority of purusha4

The objects are superior to the senses, the mind is superior to the objects, the intellect is superior to the mind, and the great atman is superior again to the intellect. The unmanifested is superior to the atman, and the purusha is superior to the unmanifested. Nothing is superior to the purusha, which is the end, which is the supreme goal.
Acharya charaka explained three types of purusha ekadhatuja (Only consciousness), shaddhatuja (Sum of six elements namely ether and four protoelements sixth is consciousness) and chaturvimshati purusha (Trancendental element).
