It’s definitely true that competitive sports can cause all sorts of injuries from big to small. The media teaches people simply that sports leads to horrific injuries and can cause stress, but what the mainstream media hardly discusses are the great benefits of competitive sports. While there may be some negatives to competitive sports, that’s just life, and to add on to that; there are plenty of benefits which are sure to override to media’s facts. Kids should play competitive sports because competitive sports teach children powerful life lessons, contributes to their social and mental stability, and because of the physical gain competitive sports provides.

This thought that coaches have no obligation to defend their athletes’ mental, and physical safety is absurd. Imagine being the MVP of an all star sports team, then suffering a concussion from a very competitive game or tournament. No matter what sport an athlete plays or how skilled they are at it, there is always going to be a possibility of injury. Concussions are an injury with serious side effects and can permanently end any star's career. Today, many young athletes suffer from sport related concussions. An estimated 3.8 million recreational and athletic concussions occur annually in the United States, according to statistics in 2012 (Concussion and Sports). Concussions are high on the rise and make athletes very vulnerable and prone to them. Among male athletes, sports resulting in the most concussions include football, ice hockey, lacrosse, wrestling, and soccer. For female athletes, soccer, lacrosse, and basketball were recorded for the sports that resulted in the most concussions. Youth athletes who have suffered one concussion, onset greater chances of experiencing more.

Concussions can have a major impact on athletes. In this paper I want to know if Athletes with concussions can get back on the field and reach their potential without damaging themselves. There are many rehabilitation and therapy techniques to help an athlete recover from a concussion. There is also many ways to help prevent sport related concussions. There are psychological, motivational, and physical difficulties for the player to overcome after a concussion.
This study was a within subject study because they tested a total of three hundred forty-eight varsity athletes and used all the tests on each athlete. Although the researchers could not control how the athletes felt throughout the experiment, they did control the tests and speed of recoveries each athlete received. Overall, the results that were found throughout the whole experiment was a triumph. The results show that the athletes with a pessimistic view are more likely to recover quickly because they become less pain tolerant and developed coping strategies. The athletes with the optimistic view who lack coping strategies experienced higher levels of negative emotions such as anger, depression, and anxiety as a result of not being in control of the rehabilitation, leads to a slower recovery.
