At its greatest, the Islamic Empire stretched from Spain to China. The Islamic Empire spread to encompass such an extensive empire by using military force, leadership, and people. Muhammad first spread Islam by preaching the revelation that he claimed to have received from God.
For the Islamic Empire to have further expanded there had to be military conquest. Documents 4, 7, and 8 all explained how Muhammads’ military aided the Islamic Empire to expand. The Moslems struck their enemies and laid waste to the country and took captives without number… everything gave way to their scimitars [swords]… All the nations of the Franks trembled as that terrible army… attacked Tours… and the fury and cruelty of the Moslems towards the inhabitants of

Documents 1, 2, and 6 help to show Islamic Empire expanded. Believe or else pay tribute [money]… obey the Lord and his Apostle [Mohammad], and he will defend you… But if you displease them… I will fight against you and take captive your little ones and slay the elder (Doc 1). The point of view is of someone who follows Islam and is speaking for Muhammad. This document tells us that if they believe in the Islamic religion then there will be no consequences but if they don’t, hardships will come to them. So basically, Mohammad used his power to force people to believe in Islam. Ye shall do battle with them, or they shall profess Islam… whosoever shall obey God and His Apostle, He shall bring him into the gardens of [Paradise]; but whosoever shall turn back, He will punish him… (Doc 2). The point of view for document 2 is of someone who is on Muhammads side and follows Islam. This document is very much alike document 1 in the way that they both show that people had no choice in what to believe in. This is because if you didn’t believe in Islam you were punished by the leader. The use of leadership helped to expand the Islamic Empire since people were forced to believe. Islam never interfered with the dogmas of any moral faith, never persecuted… Islam “grasped the sword” in self defense; Christianity grasped it in order to stifle freedom of thought and liberty of belief. Wherever Christianity prevailed, no other religion could be followed without molestation. The Moslems, on the other hand, required from others a simple guarantee of peace, tribute in return for protection, of perfect equality – on condition of the acceptance of Islam (Doc 6). This document shows that the leader guaranteed a life of peace and protection if they accepted into Islam. This is why people chose to follow Islam and further expand the civilization because they guaranteed many
So if anyone rebelled against the Islamic empire they would lose the
There was an extreme Islamic conquest throughout Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East. In an excerpt from a book by al-Baladhuri, in Document F, it states, “But the people of Hims replied, ‘We like your rule and justice far better than the state of oppression and tyranny in which we were.
According to many sources, Muslims went on military conquests all the way through Africa, up to Spain and all the way to France; also, the military attacked up to Constantinople, across the Tigris River, and all the way to the Indus River in Asia(Doc. C). This map shows that the Muslim military traveled far across three continents and conquered a very large area in 125 years. The last reason that Islam spread so rapidly was the Muslim military that won many important battles and conquered a very large
After Muslim conquests, the growth of cities flourished under Islam rule. Muslim rulers gained control of the pre-existing cities and founded new ones from Asia to Europe. Cities and urban areas in Muslim society were important because of the role it plays in religion, trade, and culture. Trade was a very significant part of Muslim society. The trade network is expansive and the routes extend across Europe, North Africa and Asia (Document 6).
This is important because it shows that Muslims were trying to spread Islam, and it worked. The evidence connects to the thesis because it demonstrates the conquest were an essential part in the growth of Islam. Though Islam had religious tolerance, they instituted a special tax on non-Muslims, which pressured them to convert to Islam. This was called “jizyah” according to the document. Since they could only do this when they conquered areas, it was
With his newfound beliefs, Muhammad sought to teach others of his religion. The question at hand, however, is how did Islam spread so rapidly? Thankfully, it is clear that Islam was able to spread so quickly due to military force, trade, and appealing values. The first key factor of the spread of Islam was military force.
Document C also states, “Islam spread east to the Indus river and north to the Caspian Sea.” This shows the religion itself spread very far due to conquest. The large, quickly conquered area was under Muslim control, exposing the people to the religion and causing them to
After the Muslims took over, the people of the Byzantine Empire told the Muslims how much they loved being under the Muslim rule and that they were willing to help pay the taxes the Muslims needed. This helped Islam spread quickly because the people loved the religion and wanted to be under the Muslim rule which would have people want to convert. However, this is the LEAST important reason because Political Organizations have nothing to do religion and is not inspiring while Military Conquest insures safety and a strong message would appeal to those who need a
Why did Islam spread Quickly? - Trade The Islamic religion spreaded quickly because of trade. Based on the fact, that Islam had trade over many empires. Corresponding to the map on Document A, “ Adding from the profits of caravans was a brisk pilgrimage trade, for Mecca was the site of Arabia 's holiest shrine.
The Islamic religion spread into lands from “Tours and Tangier to Kabul and Bukhara” (Document C). The followers of the religion spread Islam to many cities by conquering their lands and converting the people there to Islam. Another example of how Islam spread so quickly through military conquest is how they got all the Muslims together and attacked some of the non-Islamic communities. “The obvious answer was a series of Ghazu raids against the non-Muslim communities in the neighboring countries” (Document D). By getting all the people that practiced the religion of Islam and organizing an outwardly-offensive attack together against all the other countries, these Muslims have been able to easily overpower and conquer countries, therefore spreading their religion.
Islam is a religion that controls their follower's daily lives. It quickly spread throughout many large and small civilizations all throughout the world. Two civilizations that Islam affected were the Byzantine Empire and China. The Byzantine empire was the section of Rome that remained after the fall of Rome and was a very successful civilization in its time. During the rise of Christianity, the Byzantine empire became a Christian-based civilization and used the church to solve its political and economic problems that sprang up after the fall of Rome.
Islam was welcomed into areas under these empires because people didn 't like the oppressive rule. In conclusion, trade, conquest and choice are reasons Islam spread so
A. PREAMBLE The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 has sparked intense curiosity and interest in the world especially the West to learn and investigate the religion of Islam. The Muslim people are portrayed as violent and barbaric, and Islam as oppressive and antithesis to human rights values. Thus, escalation of public opinion about Islam has encouraged debates and forums, and also stirred demonstrations and movements which have compelled the Muslims to speak out their minds and interpret and recast their texts viz. Quran and Sunnah of prophet Mohammad and even question and challenge the prevailing culture and practices, and domineering structures.
Why did Islam spread so fast? In 610 CE A man named Muhammad was outside of a cave meditating and soon began hearing voices. As he listened he heard them say “Give birth to a religion called Islam.” Islam began to spread faster than any other religion.
Mansa Musa helped Islam spread by leaving to pilgrimage and introduced the empire to the Islamic World. He encouraged learning to read the Arabic language to read the Qur’an. He hired architects to build mosques as well. Another example is the Songhai empire. Songhai leaders were Muslims as well.
