After reading St Perpetua’s account of her own execution, one can infer that the Roman empire at the time was a cold bureaucratic regime. Throughout the retelling, Perpetua is constantly chastised by her faith in Christianity, not only from her father begging her to abandon her faith but from the treatment of Perpetua and her child by the Guards escorting her, emphasizing Roman society’s contempt for Christianity and its followers. Afterwards, she is taken away while eating to her trail, implying that the Romans adherence for orders was so intrinsic that they would ignore another person’s needs. Of course, while Christianity in this account is viewed as a faith one must fully devote themselves to, Perpetua is not a reliable source for Christianity
The values and traditions that women were expected to hold changed extravagantly in the 700 years between the deaths of Lucretia and Perpetua. Through their respective documents, “Rape of Lucretia,” and “The Martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas,” we can see the change of ideals in the form of expecting Roman women to do chores and stay at home, while the Roman/Christian women are expected to hold their faith and Christian values dear. Both of them are portrayed in different light, but in the end it is done to argue for a cause. Lucretia is portrayed as a humble individual who holds honor of the family higher than herself. Perpetua is demonstrated as a stubborn individual who won't turn her back on her faith, even for her family.

In “Pliny, Letters 10.96-97,” the author writes a letter to Emperor Trajan addressing the concern of Christianity and its believers revolting. Christians did not believe in the Greek Gods and the Kings as god and the Romans did not like that. He starts the letter with a question of an unsureness of what to do about the Christians and so he writes this letter to the emperor to see what he thinks about his idea on execution. From this, the tone of the author shows a big contradictory in the idea that Christians are harmless but also has a high focus on the dislike of Christians using ethos and logos.
