1.0 INTRODUCTION According to Griffin, staff appraisal system contributes in helping the managers to evaluate the staff’s performance. The objective of this system is to develop a fair system to measure the staff’s attitude and responsibilities in fulfill the demand of the department. Promotion is also one of the reasons why Information System Department (ISD) needs to evaluate employee’s performance. The employee appraisal system will also help to improve the staff’s performance and boost their motivations. The purpose of performance appraisal system is to become an effective tool that will improve the performance and the productivity of the staffs as well as to fulfill the vision and mission of ISD. The departments without performance appraisal system will destroy the goals of a department and crush the staff performance. It is because there is no reason in doing something if there is no purpose or objective. So, that is why the ISD staff performance appraisal information needs to be managed properly and effectively.

The importance of staff retention Nurse retention is to provide staff with implements that will empower them in the workplace. Empowerment in organizational structures include power and opportunity. Employees with high levels of power are included in lines of information, support, resources and opportunities to learn and grow (Schwinger ET AL., 2010). In additional employees who have high levels of opportunity in their jobs tend to be more proactive problem solvers and accept change. Short staffing is one of the many challenges nurses encounter in the work environment. The impacts can be detrimental primarily to the patient’s outcome. To examine the effects of short staffing, research was conducted on 36,539 hospital inpatients to evaluate the amount of those exposed to an understaffed shift and how many patient outcomes resulted in a NSO (Twigg, Gelder, & Myers, 2015). NSO’s are nurse sensitive outcomes based on the nursing care provided to the patient. Patients exposed to short staffing had an increase of greater than one chance of NSO’s compared to patients not exposed (Twigg et al., 2015).

Dan is experiencing a large amount of stress in his life. Most of the stress that he is experiencing is coming from work. Some of the sources of stress that are causing him trouble are several co-workers with a lot of experience leaving, having a new manager getting transferred in, and a rough patch in his at home relationships. The reason that the leaving of co-workers caused stress is because now a lot of their work was put on the employees still there, which included Dan. That increase in work can cause stress by itself.
