Standardized Testing
Standardized tests are deeply flawed ,and cause many issues in the school system. Like mental abuse to children and making their only goal about their test scores. This also causes stress for teachers who have children who struggle with Testing. Standardized tests should not be allowed in the schooling system. It doesn't show how smart a student is and it causes too many problems with both teachers and students.

It tells how smart students are, what college they will go to, it basically tells students how successful they will be. Having something this controlling isn’t good to have. It just shows which students are good at test taking and who is not. That's why “Standardized achievement tests are deeply flawed, and test-based accountability has been terribly damaging to public education.”(Starr). These tests do not provide any feedback on how to perform better. Students do not get their results until months later on. The teachers do not even get instructions on how to teach it and hardly get any feedback. The test only covers students' general knowledge, not specific stuff. Having children who stress so much about a test and only want a good score just is not good so “I tell my kids that standardized tests don't mean anything in the long run and that they'll never have to take such tests once they start working (unless it's for a certification of some kind). I tell my kids that I value them as people, not scores” (Starr). Standardized testing puts too much stress on children now-a-days and it makes them worry too much and not live their life as teens. It doesn’t allow the teacher to teach the kids the stuff that will help them grow. They can’t teach them critical thinking skills or open them up to being creative and learning deeper skills that will help you evolve as a person.So without all of that kids are stuck with stressing out and having anxiety or even depression because of a grade. These kids base their knowledge and how smart they are on these tests and it lowers their self esteem.”Younger students are optimistic and rely only on support from their teachers and rewards to feel that they are doing good. But by the time students are in middle school, their attitude relies solely on their test scores and their grades”(Brown). Kids rely on their teachers and parents for support. Students leave school stressed and full of anxiety and its actually making a negative effect on their everyday life. Students get so overwhelmed that harming themselves is in the picture. The state needs to realize that students aren’t giving their 100% and they will never know their actual academic skills. So why give standardized test? Teachers need to focus on the future and teaching them skills they need in their everyday life.
Proponents see standardized testing as a way of making testing more efficient and effective by minimizing cost and increasing people’s accountability for their performance in the system. Opponents on the other hand argue that the systems has limitations based on its very nature on what can be tested and as a result of these standards needing to be met sacrifice some very important aspects of students education experience as well as force onto students and teachers a one size fits all model that has failed to deliver on its promises. After having reviewed all the evidence in detail it becomes clear to me that standardized testing is not an effective system for educating students and does more bad than good
The net result is less wasted instructional time and a simplified way of timeline management. It also gives parents a good idea of how their children are doing as compared to students across the country and locally. This can also allow students’ progress to be tracked over the years. However, when this test is as a tool or indicator to evaluate education performance and to have some sort of accountability for schools and teachers. The problem arises when teachers have "added" pressure of making sure everyone succeeds because of these tests on top of the normal stress and pressure of educating their students.
The tests are meant to measure the intelligence of students, to show how well the teachers are doing, and to see if the school’s program is working. Standardized tests should be eliminated because students are stressed, it is not a true measure of a student’s intelligence, and students aren’t learning

The average American student takes about 112 standardized tests between pre-kindergarten and 12th grade (Strauss). A standardized test is any form of test that requires the student to answer the same selection of common questions in a consistent matter, which makes it possible to compare relative student performance. Standardized tests restrict creativity, waste time, and waste money. We should get rid of standardized tests in our school system. Standardized tests limit a student’s ability to express creativity.
While this may impact those kids that are focused on, the other kids are pushed aside on the back burner. The main reason behind this is that teachers are forced to have their students reach a certain level of success by standards set by the nation and their bosses. The number of tests that students have to take removes their ability to be creative and have an opinion. Bronwyn Williams expresses this when she says, “Standardized testing, to be standardized, must create questions that leave no room for interpretation…allow for no independent meaning making from students.” (154).
School’s are using standardized testing for the wrong reason. “A standardized test is any examination that’s administered and scored in a predetermined, standard manner. Throughout the years, standardized testing has become something no student looks forward to. But, there might be deeper reasons as to why they despise it. Standardized tests have been around since the mid-1800s and have been used to measure a students' knowledge and ability to achieve their goals. However, as the year's progress, this form of testing has proven to cause problems. Students, teachers, and schools are all affected by standardized testing and its components in various ways.
Taking hours to complete a test, and even more hours to wait until all other students are done testing, is an experience American students know all too well. Every year students across the United States take standardized tests. Contrary to what the Board of Education may have students and parents believe, standardized tests are not as beneficial as they initially seem. When researching the topic, standardized tests not only divide students, but they also break students mentally while also preventing them from learning material and skills they will need later in life; standardized testing is not beneficial for students.
Standardized tests can discriminate against students based on race, ethnicity, and even gender. This proves that standardized tests are not useful because they favor certain students over others. Standardized tests, although they are thought to measure a student’s knowledge, actually do not. Many factors play into knowledge and standardized tests just can not measure them fully. Lastly, teachers focus too much on standardized tests, and they could think that the tests measure how good of a teacher they are.
Not only does it allow planning, but it also shows the weakness of students. So, they can then start focusing on their weaknesses to make them their strengths. “In addition to comparing students against one another or identifying problematic schools or districts, standardized tests can also illustrate student progress over time. Taking the same or similar tests over the years can allow students to indicate measurable improvement”(Crowder). Thus, finding out which school districts are weaker in which subjects, such as math or reading.
Administrator Mr. Parker took the same survey, and he said,”I think that if used correctly then it can improve students overall education. While we know the process can be stressful for students, the data that we receive is used to determine if we as a school are doing a good job in preparing our students. Standardized testing is an exam that requires all test takers to answer a selection of questions from a common bank of questions of a selected material. There are two diverse ways to take a standardized test, for example, paper-based and computer-based. This house believes that standardized testing should be banned because it increases stress, some students don't do well when testing, and costs a lot of money. Firstly, standardized testing should be banned because it increases stress.
They believe it gives accurate results on the students learning, and accurate is a way of evaluating what a student does or does not know across areas like math, reading, and writing. Teachers and even so parents believe it allows them to see how their students is doing, compared to the other students in their class, school, city, and country. They believe these tests are important because it shows students problems in certain areas and shows them what the teachers need to focus more on. They believe these tests are important because everything on the tests are very important and needs to be taught. It gives the students a picture of their progress in the significant areas like math, reading, writing.
