People in different social classes within a community, causing them to behave differently than their peers.
In his terms, he defined socioeconomic status by how much money someone earns annually, how far they took their education, and the type of work they do for a living. This concept shows how society ranks an individual, based upon the type of success they have had. In modern day society, someone who has a high socioeconomic status would be an individual who most likely makes more than $250,000 yearly as a business owner, a CEO of a business, or is a doctor in the medical field. This person would also have a masters or doctorate degree from a well-known university. Whereas someone who has a low socioeconomic status would most likely be an individual who lives at or below the poverty line by working in a profession that does not pay well, but must be filled to help society function, and either have a high school diploma or never finished high
Social status is defined as a person's standing or importance in relation to other people within a society. Social status has affected the world for hundreds of years, from where you were allowed to go to the bathroom, to if you were allowed to vote. The way a person is viewed and treated is all caused by what is believed to be their rank in society and in the short story, “A&P”, John Updike uses irony, symbolism, and characterization to show this. Sometimes people dissatisfied with their opportunities get caught up with what others represent, causing rash decisions that lead to disappointment.
The rhetorical strategy behind each example is to emphasize the lack of equality among the social classes and the corruption within

There are four social classes: upper class, middle class, working class and under class. An example of people who may be discriminated against because of their social class would be someone who is poor. Individuals who are poor, under class and some working class, in school could be called ‘scruffy’ by their peers because they might not be able to afford new clothes. This could lead to teachers discriminating and treating students differently. This could show overt and covert discrimination in a health and social care setting.
This aspect of the social class system primarily represents the class system, yet subliminally declares the system to be backwards and rather
Low class and no power, but he has a high status within the tail end. Many around him look up to him and follow his wise words. Another would be how Wilford’s assistant has high class and status but no power compared to Wilford. Though some have higher class than others, their status might not be as high, comparatively. Although they may have a high status does not mean they have power, unless they find a way to attain it.
Some are even members of two minority groups, which makes situations and opportunities worse for them. (Brym, Roberts, Strohschein, Lie, 2016) The topic of social stratification can also come in to play while looking at these patterns of social relations. Homeless people are of lower strata, and the richer are considered to be some of the most important people in society. (Brym et al., 2016)
