It is usually pretty easy to become a happier person.
It is also quite easy to rob yourself of your own happiness. To make yourself more miserable and add a big bowl of suffering to your day. It is common thing, people do it every day all over the world.
So this week I’d like to combine these two things. I want to share 7 happiness stealing habits that I have had quite a bit of trouble with in my own daily life (and I know from the emails I get that many of you do too).
But I’d also like to add what you can do instead if you find yourself being stuck in one of these destructive habits.
1. Going for daily swim in a sea of negative voices.
This one can be quite subtle.

Consider spending less time with the ones that drag you down (or cut them out completely) and to spend more of your time with the people and sources that lift you up and make you feel good, motivated etc.
If you have trouble getting started with this one, then go smaller. Take a few minutes to think about what one person or source that has the biggest negative impact on you. And how you can start to spend less time with it/him/her this week.
2. Waiting for just the right time.
When you have a dream then it is so easy to get lost in planning how you will accomplish it. To drift away in daydreams about how it will be. But also to get stuck in fears about failing with it.
So you make a common choice and wait – and wait and wait for maybe years – for just the right time to take action and get started with making that dream into something real.
What to do instead:
Sure, not every dream is something you can get started with right now. But there are many that you can get going with. Dreams that only fear is holding you back
Each person has been taught to hope, to have a dream. I always shot for the stars; I wanted to be a princess, obviously that didn’t work out though. As every individual ages his or her aspirations become more realistic; I aspire to have a stable job and a loving family. Having dreams is an important part of everyone’s lives.

Others might say not all dreams can be completed and they are just mere fantasies. Source E states, “Young adults, age 18 to 34, are most likely to feel the dream is unattainable, with 63% saying it's impossible.” Although this may be the case in some families, there is no denying that many people within the youth community have reached their goals. Many getting access to schools and growing in “different political persuasions and professions “ (source B).
Dreaming was never a part of me. I always thought a dream was something you wish for. However, setting goals are only my objective because a goal means something you will achieve, unlike a dream, it isn’t something you wish. When you realize, that in life you don’t get what you deserve, you have to start hustling for your own good. Succeeding is one way to define who I am.
Those people are wrong. First of all, “a recent study in the academic journal Social Forces has revealed that only 6 percent of adults ended up in the careers they dreamt about as kids” (Haltiwanger). Dreams just aren’t a realistic thing to be caught. On the extremely rare occasion that somebody does catch their dream, they hold on to it for dear life. Holding on to a dream is “like holding a fistful of sand: the tighter [someone holds their fingers] The emptier [their hand becomes]” (Woodard).
Happiness is a rite of passage to everyone no matter what cost. It can be extremely difficult to take someone’s happiness away, but it can be done. For example, in the book “Anthem” by Ayn Rand, Prometheus’ happiness is stripped from him in a futuristic society focused around similarity and compliance. Similarly, this unfortunately can happen as we are currently witnessing in Communist countries. Rand describes taking away individuality by forcing everyone to use “we” instead of “I”.
For example, if someone had the desire to write a book, they would write copious amounts of drafts and edit all their work. Also, it might take several times to figure out everything. Dreams are not a one-step process. They take time, but there will be time. In a minute there is time for a hundred visions and revisions.
Lastly, I believe the last key to happiness if to look at everything in the most possible way. If you look at everything negative then you will never be truly happy and you won’t have very many people who wants to be around a Debby Downer. Being happy is a choice, as Abraham Lincoln said,” Most folks are happy as they make up their mind to be” you have every right to be happy, its just up to you to make it
I believe that pursuing happiness as a goal has detrimental effects. As a society, we tend to believe that we need to be full of joy at all times, but that isn't realistic - life happens. By attempting to be cheery all the time, you will never be genuinely content. You will always be searching for more and won't be satisfied with what you have, creating a permanent cycle of gloom rather than bliss.
Throughout the course of one’s life, there is a constant search for some form of happiness. We may not always realize we are on the quest for it, but it’s part of human nature. In “Silver Linings Playbook” we see this happen throughout with Pat and Tiffany, who are both searching for happiness. The film is relatable to us all in that many times we go looking for happiness only to come up empty-handed.
To dream is to desire an achievement which seems unobtainable. Most everyone has trouble convincing themselves that their dreams are within reach. Jim Carrey once said, “So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality.” This is a result of allowing dreams to remain dreams and, instead, opting to take a more reliable path. In doing so, a sense of emptiness that never completely dies out is often developed.
A dream can be defined as a strong desired goal or purpose that a person has. Many people have a dream that they want to accomplish in life, but never get the chance to do it. People are either too busy with work, a family, or they do not have the money to start their dream. Today people see others accomplish their dreams all the time on TV shows like The Voice, Master Chef, and American Idol. The novel Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck shows that during the Great Depression dreams were desired, but very hard to attain.
Dreaming is a huge part of people’s lives. Dreams happen to everybody and are different to everybody. They tell a lot about a person’s life. Dreams are viewed differently by so many people. People have opinions on what makes dreams happen, what dreams are, and what they mean.
What does it mean to dream? Well, I believe dreams will always remain a mystery of phenomenons that science will never be able to explain. However, we can interpret our dreams in many different aspects. Philosophers, such as Alan Watts, interpret dreams in an interesting way, such as it being an adventure (The Dream of Life). From this, I’d like to think of dreams as adventures for our minds; we’re subconsciously wandering to a new adventure every time we decide to rest our eyes.
William A. Ward once said, “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it”. If only this were always true; living would be so simple and easy. The idea behind a dream is that if an individual is ambitious and determined, he/she has a fair chance of fulfilling their goal, and the happiness that comes with it.
