Many topics concerning education and its institutions are discussed in Amanda Ripley’s book “The Smartest Kids in The World: and how they got that way,” however, one of the most interesting can be found in chapter five “An American in Utopia.” The introduction of Kim, an American exchange student studying at a high school in Pietarsarri, Finland opens the chapter. Using Kim’s experiences in the Finish school system, Ripley continues to make a comparison between the students' in Finland and the United States. This segment highlights Finish teachers and students viewing education as a legitimate pursuit, while the American students more often than now saw it as a forced activity. Incidentally, the students viewpoints in the two countries are then used to look at the different levels of education teachers need to complete in Finland and America in order to become professional educators. This dialogue is eventually transitioned into a history of the sweeping education reforms in Finland and the lack of similar reforms in America.

Literature has been around for many ages. There are many different types of literature fro. many different times. The way people write has changed throughout the years. American literature is commonly talk about because it is well liked, although sometimes it can be hard to understand if you are currently a student. There is nothing quite like the stories that were written in this time. The Devil and Tom Walker, The devil and Daniel Webster, The Man in the Black Suit, and The Scarlet Letter all things in common because they all describe the devil in a special way along with authors of the stories were all men.

The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss isn’t like another ordinary children’s book. The book presented social stratification and inequality between the sneetches on the beaches. In the story, the star-bellied sneetches separated themselves as elite, but when the plain-bellied sneetches gets a chance to have stars, the social status system is hurled into disorder. The book subliminally talked about discrimination going on in society. The star-bellied sneetches lived a happier life and were considered “better” than the plain-bellied sneetches. It described a type of social stratification when the sneetches are divided into two separate groups, and the ones with star-bellies were seen as more superior. Fahrenheit 451 is set in a horrible, yet very possible, dystopian world. The setting is very undesirable because everyone thinks that books are bad so they have prohibited all of them. Everyone has this Belief because over time it has been convinced that books only bring sorrow. Most people have forgot about books and their importance, but the people who haven’t forgotten try to sneak books into their homes only to then have their homes burned, sometimes with them in it. Books are valuable, worth the time and effort, and in Montags’ world books are considered dangerous. His world also shows us how books compare to other human activities.

Dr. Seuss was a childhood hero. From Green Eggs And Ham to cat in the hat, every child has enjoyed his books. Dr. Suess, while his stories are silly, they also teach valuable life lessons and also can be based on real life situations. For instance, The Butter Battle Book is based on War. the reason being is because the long wall in the Book is based on the Berlin Wall, as the Yooks and Zooks are to the United States and Russia.“The ending of the book is a cliff hanger and it forces to think about ourselves”, as it says on ("Shmoop.com"). That is why Seuss’s books and poems were so precious to us as children because they provided life lessons and inspire us.

Since time immemorial, people have been communicating ideas. Literature allows us to visit the highest and lowest conditions in human society. It allows us to travel and visit far-flung locations without leaving the safety of our abode. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, literature means writings in prose or verse; especially: writings having the excellence of form or expression and expressing ideas of permanent or universal interest. Literature, in the broadest sense, can be anything written down on a fixed surface or information that is orally shared with the purpose of sharing a concept or story. “Good fiction creates empathy. A novel takes you somewhere and asks you to look through the eyes of another person, to live another life”. (Barbara Kingsolver) Fiction is an imaginary thing or event, postulated for the purposes of argument or explanation as defined by Dictionary.com. There are many literary devices that writers incorporate into their works. The main reason literary devices are used is to connect with the reader. When we read, we want to truly enjoy what is written we need to become a part of the story. And literary devices help us to better see and feel the storyline. A good storyline captures all of our senses, these devices draw the reader in, paint a picture, heighten the senses, and pull at us emotionally. Throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story The Birthmark, some of the key literary devices used were irony symbol and theme.

Even though it isn’t my content area, I am a strong believer in the power of literature.

Literature is truth. Whether it be fiction or nonfiction, somewhere in the world, it is someone 's truth. The lines dance and sing a story that becomes ideas and veracity in our society. It is expression for those who cannot find it in voice. It is a vast world in which any one can live and explore, thrive. Ideas and knowledge are stored. Mistakes are logged and learning is developed. Literature defines humankind. So why would the Government take it away? In Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag lingers in a world where literature is burned by fireman in front of the reader’s eyes. The Government fears intellect and view-points, so they remove it. They burn it. And Montag never questioned this. In fact, he loved it. He loved to burn. But after meeting a strange intellect named, Clarisse, he started questioning everything he ever believed as routine. Ray Bradbury asks the question whether a censored, innovative society keep peace and prosperity? Or does it lead to a shallow, colorless world where the earth cries out for your attention but you are moving too fast to see it.

The question of what exactly is literature comes up every time something is written or read. This question forms many of the English classes that students take all around the world, and this question dominates the literary community. So what exactly is literature and why is it so important? Literature is non-factual, with sensuous language, about particular people or events that have significance. Literature is often figurative and appeals to the emotions. During the early colonial times of America, many authors wrote about the things they experienced during that time. Two well-known authors of that period were John Smith and Anne Bradstreet. Smith gave accounts of what he experienced during that period through prose, whereas Anne Bradstreet wrote about some things that went on her life through poetry. Smith’s writings have the purpose of telling what happened and providing the facts, whereas Anne Bradstreet does tell what happened, but she also looks toward the future in her writings.

A novel can influence our understanding of history. I strongly agree with this statement. A historical novel is a novel that has as its setting a period of history and attempts to convey personal experiences and historical events to historical fact. The novel Briar Rose (1992) written by Jane Yolen is an example of a historical novel. Briar Rose influences our understanding of the Holocaust and allows a reader to gain an understanding of how a human who went through the Holocaust deals with and shares their experiences. They also gain an understanding of that period in time, how people were treated during that period in time and what went on during that period of time.

The reason why I want to be part of the National English Honor Society is because English is my favorite subject. Since I was young, I have always been the reader in my family and it has always been one of my best subjects in school. Ever since I was young, I have always been the reader in my family. Reading has been my escape from the stress of school and work and is an outlet for me to relax. I often imagine myself as the character of the stories and try to figure out what I would do if I was the character in real life. Dr. Seuss’s is a well- known and influential American writer whose books staple in homes and elementary schools today. Dr. Seuss's books had an influence on me because they always gave me a sense of imagination. Dr. Seuss's books were an easy read and constantly getting stuck in my head. As a young girl I used to quote Green Eggs and Ham all the time around my house. Even during the holiday season (Christmas time) Dr. Seuss’s book The Grinch who stole Christmas is constantly being read internationally in commemoration of Christmas spirit. Dr. Seuss 's books have had an influence on me through the teaching me to read. The reason his books and his writing have had such an influence on me is because that was all I read when I was a kid. His book were so fun to read and I learned faster when I read them. My dance teacher even let us do a dance about Dr. Seuss 's books. Another Influence Dr. Seuss 's books and writing had an influence on me was when I read his book I could imagine things easier rather then me reading a chapter book. Everyone knows that reading is important, but have you ever asked yourself why is that so? Reading is one of the most beneficial and practical activities that a human being can do. Unfortunately it is a disappointment that people these days read less. As we know, books were the main source of entertainment centuries ago, but with the widespread of technological advances such as the cinema, television, internet, among others, many people left their books on the bookshelf. The purpose of this speech is to present the benefits and the importance of reading. The reasons are that it is through reading that a person is going to be able to discover new ideas, concepts, meet new places and people that time, money or reality sometimes prohibited.
