Yo soy Latina. Born and raised in the United States with Peruvian and Uruguayan roots, a first generation college student and fluent bilingual speaker. I take pride in my Latina roots; they’ve shaped my personality, ideals, and opinions tremendously. Looking on the outside, I have that curvy body, long dark wavy hair, brown eyes; it is the typical Latina look that can be easily identified. That look that can put an actress in a “box”.

Disney Racism Examples In the movies shown in the video fictional characters are shown to perpetuate insensitive and offensive stereotypes. Many Disney characters in the past have been portrayed in a similar light in an attempt that certain demographics can subconsciously identify with them. This has been exhibit from a plethora of different characters from ‘Sebastian’ from “The Little Mermaid” to ‘King Louie’ from “The Jungle Book” no matter they be man, animal, or inanimate object. I believe attaching these ethnic labels to purely fictional characters is wrong and may send inaccurate representations about these groups of people to younger viewers.

By writing Black Like Me, John Griffin was trying to write down everything he felt was important on his journey as a black man. One of the major things wrote down was the idea of white racism. Which is the belief that white people are superior to other races and because of that should run society. So, the main topic of the novel was social divide of whites and African Americans. As a black man John saw the contempt white people had towards African Americans, and just the overall condescending attitude emanated from these people.

Films have been a major part of the fabric of American society for many decades now. Americans are constantly bombarded with adverts about the newest number one movie. That said, Americans are continuously judging and critiquing films in the form of movie reviews. Such evaluations result in multiple interpretations of films. Nevertheless, over the course of a lifetime, people are taught many lessons from films.

Hidden Stereotypes There is one hard and very evident fact that exists in the world we inhabit; that fact is that stereotypes are as common as rain. They happen so often that we aren’t even aware that they occur. These atrocities appear in books, films, the news, and other worldwide forms of media.

Nowadays, movie or film is one of the most programs that is welcome almost every country. People usually watch movies with their families after a hard working day. Of course, Hollywood is a big film industry that is very famous in the United States and all around the world. They gather all meaningful stories from different countries such as China and Japan, and they use those stories to make movies to visualize what happens in the story. Some of the movies from Hollywood have trouble with the audience when those movies have to do with tradition and culture of Asian countries.

First, one of the reasons that the Hollywood writers and directors have a social responsibility to avoid stereotyping ethnic character is racism issues. Racism is one of hot issues that people need to concern when it already happened in that past but still appear in nowadays. It is clearly present in the Hollywood film back in the days when the motion picture industry is only owned and controlled by the white people. Most majority of white actors and actresses were only people that could appear or had roles on the films, and there were neither Asian people nor African American people to act any roles on the film. Even there were Asian roles in the film, only white actors were hired to act these stereotypical characters.

The Foundation of stereotypes When you pick a documentary, what’s the first thing you notice: color, the image and the bold letters on the cover? They are usually no more than three words just burning on the cover. But we never consider from where the author or authors came up with them, or what purpose do they hold. In the documentary Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People, the title holds a significant meaning. It represents the movement of how Hollywood has portrayed Arabs through the decades.

The Uncle Tom archetype was very prominent in television shows in the Jim Crow Era. Since then the stereotype has transformed into the Token Black Friend. This stereotype is most commonly seen in predominately white television shows. In Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Corey Gamble represents the token Black person; in the show, he is currently dating executive producer and matriarch to the family, Kris Jenner. In many episodes, he exhibits traits of the Uncle Tom archetype, he is "submissive, stoic, generous, and selfless" (Bogle 6) because he puts Kris's needs before his, and is always willing and ready to help.

Film makers continue to misrepresent African-Americans in movies depicting them as characters, such as the brash women, domestic workers, thugs, and the “magical negro”. The brash African American women is depicted as being rude and having an attitude towards people in her immediate surrounding. The brash women in depicted as being loud mouth and not caring for what other people might think of her. These images are bad since people who do not live in close to the African-American community could stereotype and assume that all African American women act with a brash personality. Surprisingly, many of the films that includes the brash stereotype is found in African American film maker Tyler Perry.

Films and media have been a source of entertainment since the 1800s. Everyone has some exposure of media through news and entertainment, and we see how people perceive others around us. Some concepts, a most prominent one, coined “whitewashing”, is heavily in films and develops heavy prejudice towards other races aside from the more dominant white population. Whitewashing began during the early development of films across the United States, the castings of white actors and actresses gaining controversy and were heavily criticized. Whitewashing was considered offensive to others, because of the amount of it that was done during those times.
