CHEERLEADING A lot of people think that cheerleaders are just there to be pretty. That is not true, though. There are a lot of things to do just to get on the team like being in shape. In my paper I will explain that.
In certain cases, cheerleading can be time consuming and stressful, which establishes cheerleading as a sport. The newly found sport discovered by NCAA is called STUNT. It is a competitive team sport derived from cheerleading. The sport “focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps and tumbling (USA Cheer).
Especially in college, cheerleading should be a sport, because college level is higher and more strategic than middle and high school cheer. Yes, cheerleading is a very feminine sport and use to be a male ran activity but Title IX and all of its components should fulfill the needs for cheerleading. Cheerleading being feminine and looked down upon should not be the reason why they do not receive the aids, and materials they would need to be successful. It takes the same amount of athleticism as these sports and even more physical and emotional abilities. Cheerleading should be considered a sport because these women are just as athletic as any football team, baseball or softball
In my words, cheerleading is more than just a sport where you can yell and cheer for your basketball or football team. Cheerleading is an escape from reality where you do not have to worry about being “too loud” or doing “too much”. Just the sound of shaking my pom poms and yelling for a victory of the field or on the court gives me a feeling of liberation. Cheerleading gives me the opportunity to be myself and to not be judged based on the things i do because i know that both my teammates and coaches are there to help me.
“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” This quote is by Jesse Owens. It very precisely associates with the book “The Flip Side” by Shawn Johnson, because of the way a young girl who desires to be an Olympic gymnast dedicates herself and makes unbending sacrifices to succeed. If you ever imagined working hard for something, Charlotte(Charlie)
"They usually last a couple of hours and can consist of stunt practice, cheer practice, or competition practice, depending on what you have coming up," (www.varsity.com). Before the first football game, practice usually consist of practicing cheers and sideline chants. You may also practice stunting. If a pep rally is coming up, then practices will consist of going over and finalizing your dance and routine that you will be performing. If you are on a competitive team for you school and a competition is coming up your coach or advisor may have you work on tumbling, stunting, and your routine.
Dance is a sport because it requires work ethic, athletic ability, and builds confidence and emotion. One reason why dance is a sport is because it requires work ethic. There are so many things dancers do that are equivalent to any other sport: “We compete, It’s a workout, We stretch, We gain muscle, You need good stamina, We have uniforms, We could have equipment, We have to remember things, We get injured, Dance is difficult.” (10 Reasons Why Dance Is A Sport).
“Why Marching Band Should be a Sport” By definition, a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment, which is exactly what marching band is. There's is a scoring system, and after almost every parade with bands, there's an award ceremony where the bands receive their scores and find out their rank. Marching itself, with the choreographed movements throughout the performance of the band, is already physically challenging. However, the people in it are also carrying around their instruments. Some of them, like the sousaphones, weigh 30-35 pounds.
Appeals court said “We do not foreclose the possibility that the activity, with better organization and defined rules, might someday warrant recognition as a varsity sport.” Judges also acknowledged cheerleading can be physically challenging, requiring competitors to possess strength, agility, and grace. Cheerleaders along with their coaches are doing as much as they can to be recognized as a sport. 7 Many people ask why competitive cheerleading should be considered a sport. Cheerleading meets all criteria to be a sport.
Being mixed race in a mono-racial society can be quite difficult. We can visualize this through the experiences of Ariana Miyamoto; someone who was born to a Japanese mother and an African-American father. During Miss Universe 2016, Ms. Miyamoto was chosen to represent her country of origin, Japan, but was quickly criticized by many because her appearance did not fit the standard image of a Japanese woman. This is definitely one of the complexities of expressing nationalism in beauty pageants because you’re expected to embody your country on stage, and in front of the world, in every possible way and failing to do so can cause outsiders and (even your own people) question your authenticity and ability to represent your country with dignity.
What do you think of when you hear the word cheer leading? Do you think of girls in tight uniforms and ponytails running around? One might think of the popular girls in their school. This isn 't always true. Stereotypes are rather common among cheerleaders, but many of them aren 't true in even the slightest.
The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader’s reputation was compromised from the beginning due to their skimpy uniforms and proactive dance moves. When the cheerleaders first came out, many people found them as a sexy tease. As the cheerleaders gained popularity, they became flooded with publicity deals and contracts. According to Mary Hanson (1995), many of the cheerleaders modeled for Playboy Bunny and other modeling agencies (p. 64). If the team was sexy as a whole it would be better publicity than if it were individuals creating media attention as sexy (p. 64).
Have you ever been to a football game before? Well if you have you know that most football teams have a cheer squad or dance team. Not many people acknowledge cheer, or think that cheer is an actual sport. well is cheer leading really a sport?
In the beginning the cheerleaders stretch out before doing anything else. After stretching they do a couple of jumps that are in their routine to warm up their bodies. After practicing their jumps, they go over their cheer routine for basketball games. They went over this routine for about an hour and half until they perfected it. They had two water breaks and did the same thing for a day until it was the basketball game.
In 1898, during a football game at the University of Minnesota, a young medical student by the name of Johnny Campbell armed only with a microphone was able to incite his classmates into joining him into a rowdy chorus in an effort to energize their team while demoralizing the opposing team. He went on to create a small team of “yell leaders” that would yell, sing, and dance to show appreciation to their favorite team. This act is attributed as the beginning of modern cheerleading which is now a part of every professional team, university, and high school in the country. The historical role of cheerleaders is to provide direction to crowds during sporting events leading in cheers, chants, and yells that serve to provide motivation to the athletes
