THE EFFECTS OF STEROIDS ON STUDENTS THAT PLAY SPORTS AT HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL
1. RESEARCH PROPOSAL
RESEARCH QUESTION
What health effects do steroids have on high school students that play sports?
HYPOTHESIS
Students that use steroids for high school sports have an improved performance but experience negative health effects on their bodies.
2. MOTIVATION OF RESEARCH
This area of research affects all students that partake in sporting activities in high school. Although steroids may be used by professional body builders to enhance their physique, however their use is also considered illicit, not only by students but by sporting professionals. This is why non-medical use of anabolic steroids is illegal and banned by most, if not all, major sports organizations. Still, some athletes persist in taking them, causing an unfair advantage. But beyond the issues of popularity or legality is the fact that anabolic steroids may cause serious long term health and psychological side effects. III. Outline of Methodology
A qualitative research shall be done as students will be sampled from different schools/areas. Questionnaires, surveys and interviews will be used to find out what the health effects are.
IV. Possible references and resources
The primary points of references will be a thorough evaluation of the audience it is targeted at – the students that take steroids – as they will be able to provide a first-hand explanation on what the effects are.
Other valid sources would be medical centres or pharmacies which would provide details on the effects that are expected to occur with the consumption of steroids, for non-medicinal & medicinal

Even the young athletes that play sport for different reasons begin to feel threatened by their performance and well developed physique. In most cases this would be another reason why students are taking steroids, because of the pressure they experience from their peers that are taking steroids. Even though the rate of steroid use for females that play sport is just below 10%, the numbers of high school and college athletes that take some sort of supplement with their workouts is still very high as it falls around the 40 to 50% margin (John Whyte, M.D., MPH, 2011).
Other studies have shown that another factor responsible for increasing the numbers of steroid use in students is the readily availability of the drug to anyone. Steroids can be purchased legally or illegally on the street. One study that was published in the Times Leader noted that 44% of 12th grade students found it "very easy" or "fairly easy" to obtain steroids. The use and sale of steroids without a physician’s prescription is a felony. Regardless, this hasn’t stopped teens from abusing the drug, said Rob Garibaldi, 2013 - an All-American outfielder who turned to anabolic steroids at the age of
Steroid usage in sports has been a controversial issue since it began sometime around the 1940’s. The conflicting opinions of how steroids in sports should be managed has eventually created what can be accurately described as a whirlwind of confusion. In the two articles “Destroyed” by Peter F. Martin, and “The Designer Player” by Rodrigo Villagomez, the authors differ in their opinions about steroid usage in sports. While Martin believes that steroid users are ruining the game and their bodies, Villagomez thinks that living itself is harming our bodies and that steroid users are heroes for making the game more interesting. However, both authors are attempting to persuade their audiences into believing what they think.
Summary The article How many rugby players use steroids? It’s more like how many don’t by Steve Howell, is about the amount of people who use steroids to enhance their skills or to gain the body they want faster. He discusses how body builder are in denial of the problems with steroids and how in rugby they would be able to go “untackled” for years.
Steroids are the common enhancer to use because it brings results fast. The effects can be worse than the results. Drug abuse can be life threatening. Athletes need to think about their future, such as family, friends, and their own life. Athletes have been using drugss for many years and will keep using for many more.
Drugs are a big issue in the sports industry. Many athletes will take performance-enhancing drugs, such as steroids, to help them play better. These types of drugs should not be allowed because it gives the player a greater advantage over other players who are playing with their natural ability. This issue could be solved if there was monthly drug testing and if the drug was not so easy to get ahold of. Many major league baseball players are getting caught using performance-enhancing drugs.
As the game continues to evolve with the equipment, the game will as evolve with steroid usage. The desire to be the best player and hit home runs have ruined the concept of playing small ball. Androstenedione and anabolic steroids are both designed to increase muscle mass in the body, which relates to an increase in power. With the prevalence of suspensions that are handed out because of the use of steroids, players should give up steroids and use hard work to get to where they desire to be. With the increase in knowledge in the medical field about steroids, it may be possible to create a way to detect steroids during test.
Every year the size of players ascends and these abusers continue to get away with little to no punishment. Highly sought after high school recruits turn to these to put on size before their first season of college football and collegiate players use them to prep for their possible future in the NFL. Due to the lack of testing, the upside for student-athletes to juice has almost become greater than the latter. Particularly in high school, the chance of a player actually getting busted does not deter them from cheating and trying to pack on excessive amounts of muscle. Every year parents lose kids that have thought they needed steroids to get bigger or improve their image.
The article tries explain how an athlete can get PEDs for therapeutic use, it also explains the limitations of this process. It also tries to explain that the reasons that may sway athletes to take illegal PEDs are very complex, these factors range from peer pressure to misleading information on PEDs to many other factors. In addition, the article also examines the dangers of the use of PEDs from a health stand point and a professional stand point. This article I believe provides valuable information for my research as I am trying to formulate the many reasons why an athlete would use performance enhancing
By allowing professional athletes to use drugs, what message are we sending out to young sports players and those who idolize their sporting heroes? Is the goal to inform them on how to cheat, or how to use your own muscle and blood to win? Performance-Enhancing drugs used by athletes can cause many health problems and create an unfair advantage to other athletes. Many of the performance enhancers used have serious health risk and allow the use of such substances could cause peer pressure to all athletes to consider using them. Athletes dreaming to improve their performance the easy way are often the first you see to start using substances; this places them at risk of the many consequences.
There are many arguments supporting the ban of PEDs from professional sports. A science-based argument against the use of PEDs in sports includes the possible side effects that accompany PEDs. Using PEDs can be detrimental to ones health and each drug comes with different unwanted side effects. The side effects range from superficial problems to long-term high-risk medical problems. The side effects aren’t just physiological but psychological too.
All athletes should be required to take a drug test. Drugs are prohibited for use to athletes. Playing sports is a privilege. Using drugs is a violation of the athletic program. Students should be tested for all drugs in there system.
Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) have been used in sports for many years. The common term for it is doping. It is one of the most important issues among professional athletes today. Doping should not be allowed in professional sports. The use of performance-enhancing drugs creates a disadvantage for the athletes that don't use PEDs since they will not perform as well as the athletes that used the drugs during the game or competition.
Lastly (transition), many athletes that use steroids are better than their opponents, by cheating. Athletes that use steroids should have bigger consequences. First of all (transitions), reports show that athletes that use steroids have a number of health issues. According to www.drugabuse.gov , all steroid users could get liver damage, heart disease, changes in cholesterol, and weight loss. While (conjunctions) males will develop breast, have shrinking testicals,
Picture this every athlete in sports using drugs no one depends on skill anymore everyone depends on performance enhancing drugs like adrenaline and steroids. Many athletes today use drugs to enhance their skills in all sports. This is a problem because some athletes use their own skills and are getting beaten by athletes who use drugs. Performance enhancement drugs create an unfair advantage over those athletes who choose to rely on their own skill. Banning drugs in sports can make a difference in the athlete 's health Drugs like steroids could decrease the user 's lifespan Performance enhancers, like steroids and other forms of doping have a negative effect on long term health ¨Gary Becker, PhD Professor in the Departments
Steroid abuse is an issue for high schoolers trying to get ahead. Though many realize these things are issues, people cling to the supposed character building sports provide, and the glorified stories of a lucky few. Bissinger feels that high school athletics will continue to devolve and ruin all of their positive
