Good People What is your definition of good or monster? Steve Harmon is a 16 year old boy from New York City. He is on trial for murder and robbery of a 55 year old drugstore owner. The jury must decide if he is a good person and not guilty or if he is a monster and guilty. In the novel, Monster, by Walter Dean Myers, Steve Harmon was a good person because he is not guilty and he cares for others. Steve Harmon is a good person because he is not guilty. Steve likes to write in his notebook and is writing about how he is innocent. We know this when the author wrote, “I didn’t kill Mr. Nesbitt.” (Myers 140). Steve is a good person because he didn’t kill Mr. Nesbitt and we know this because later in

Steve was wondering about Mr. Nesbitt after he got shot and what thoughts went through his head and what he felt. We know this when the author wrote, “The pictures of Mr. Nesbitt scare me. I think about him lying there knowing he was going to die.” (Myers 128). Steve is a good person because he can think about other people and not himself. He has selflessness and can care for other people’s situations and have empathy towards them. So he can just understand the horror that Mr. Nesbitt had to go through because an actual monster named James King shot him. Now you can see that he is a good person but there is still more proof to show you. Similarly, Steve knows that he is a good person but has to prove it to the jury. We know this because when the author wrote, “I want to look like a good person. I want to feel like I’m a good person because I believe I am.” (Myers 62). Steve is a good person because he can feel it and if you can feel something like an emotion then you can easily show it. So he, feeling like a good person and is a good person can show that he is a good person with ease. And he doesn’t have to put on a fake smile or a mask to hide what he truly feels because we know that he thinks that he is a good person and innocent of that criminal activity. Friends or people you hang out with can influence your actions so if you hang out with bad people you're going to do bad things. Also, there just wasn’t enough proof to find him guilty so if there was more proof he would be found guilty because he said he was in the store in his journal. However, just because Steve is friends with bad people doesn’t mean he is a bad person. Therefore, Steve is a good person because he wants the world to be better. Mr. Sawicki was the film club director when Steve was in it and knows about his character. We know this when the author wrote, “‘He’s very much involved with depicting his neighborhood and environment in a positive manner.’” (Myers 235). Steve is a good person because he just wants a better world. This shows that he is a good person because his old film club director can remember that he depicts his neighborhood in a good way and he doesn’t live in the best neighborhood. So, Steve is clearly a good person who wants the world to be
but i'm just going to name the top three. First steve has a guilty conscious Which means he's doubting himself about being the lookout. If he knew he wasn't a bad person Than he wouldn't be trying to convince everyone that he is a good person. Another reason is steve has multiple witnesses.
Everyone makes mistakes, they know what they did wrong and they learn from is. In any situation being on trial for your life is hard enough. When your on trial for your life and being charged with murder and not even know what you did wrong is even worse. Steve Harmon, a 16-year-old film student, is on trial for felony murder.
Throughout the book Steve shows signs of being scared. for example, when he is mopping the floor with his other inmates Steve starts feeling nausea looking at the rest of his inmates wearing the same suit he is wearing and doing the same activity as him. Steve’s biggest conflict in the story is himself. He starts feeling his self doubt
Since he is already viewed upon as guilty of felony murder by others, Steve and O’Brien must distance themselves from King. If they do not, Steve will appear as if he has a close relationship with James King therefore making it look even more clear that Steve took part in the robbery and thus not benefiting Steve’s cause. Earlier in the story, from the text, the reader can clearly identify this problem of distance between Steve and King. Therefore, O’Brien tells Steve that he needs to find a way to minimize the relationship between him and King as much as possible. Steve recalls this from his notes as he writes: “Miss O’Brien was mad today.
Steve is fighting with himself to figure out whether he is a monster. In Monster, Myers examines his idea of a monster through a court case. Firstly, Steve is fighting himself to try and find who he truly is. Disappointing, devastating, discriminating, the boy fights for his rights in front of the jury.
With all this happening to him, his mind was a quavering abyss. Based on the text provided, the situation surrounding Steve was harrowing: Steve's father, mother, and little brother were disappointed by the outcome that had come upon him. For future reference, Steve will always remember the times that his family had to come to visit him behind a piece of glass on the phone. This text shows how Steve’s decisions affected the family by
He stated that he suffered from insomnia. It is completely normal to look at the sky at night. It is almost unnatural if you never look at the stars. After this incident, they accused Steve, a calm man who had not blamed the others.
(Myers 235)This proves Steve is a good person because he still cares about if people die, nesbitt and him were not even close and he felt upset about what happened to him. He was disturbed that people would do that to an old man that worked his whole life just to get that drug store. It made him feel sick to his stomach and felt like humanity was falling. Furthermore,During this, Jerry and Steve were on the couch watching tv, Jerry said that they should be superheroes and help people. Steve said that would be cool because he could help people when they need help, when they are hurt, and when they are in danger.
Steve Harmons actions depicted his characteristics and we can, therefore, conclude that Steve Harmon is a liar as he lied under oath. Steve was also a guilt-ridden man ashamed of his actions. People who disagree may claim that Steve was undoubtedly innocent as Lorelle Henry, a witness, declared that there were only 2 people, proven to be James King and Bobo Evans, inside the store who eventually murdered Mr.Nesbitt. This may be a strong argument because it shows that Steve was not in the drugstore and could be really innocent. On the contrary, however, Steve’s job was just supposed to be a lookout and ensure that the drugstore was clear of cops or anyone inside.
Steve’s judgment of his actions is similar to a pendulum swinging. Although Steve believes within himself that he is innocent, of the important people around him, make him insecure as to the degree of his innocence and turn to others for confirmation. Steve Harmon, the defendant, is faced with an internal conflict that questions his self-identity and his character in relation to the crime.
In the book, Monster, by Walter Dean Myers, Steve didn't act as a lookout for King and Bobo. On page 177, Bobo said, “Me and King planned out a get over and we done it.” According to Bobo’s words, he didn't mention Steve’s name, which proves that Steve didn't plan to rob a drugstore with King and Bobo. For example, as stated on page 182, Petrocelli is having a conversation with Bobo, “You said you received a sign from Mr. Harmon. Can you tell me what that sign was?”
He is a good person because a criminal wouldn’t want to feel, and look like a good person. He cares for others and feels like a good person because he didn’t do anything. Also, Steve saw the pictures of Mr. Nesbit in court. Nesbit was the store owner who was killed. The author wrote, “‘The picture of Mr. Nesbitt scares me.
He said that he did not go in the store that day but he did. He also said that he is not friends with James king but he is. He also said that he will not lie during the testimony. but he lied six times during the testimony. Steve was a monster because he did not tell the police about the
I thought he was a very nice gentleman. Soft-spoken. I thought so right up to the moment I cut his throat.” (Chapter 2 page 102). Smith knows that his actions are inhumane and respects the Clutters, but even if he shows sympathy, there won’t be any escape to what he has done.
Fleming-In the story Fleming comes up to Stephen and asks him if he is ok. This shows that Fleming is a good friend. The fact that he would come up tom Stephen and ask him if he is ok and says that it will go away shows that he is a positive person. Flemings is a good friend and an overall a positive person. Flemings is a type of friend everyone should have.
