Manitowoc County, WI Steven Avery was convicted of rape. Growing up Avery was not the smartest kid; he had the IQ of 70 and was barely functional in school. In 1982 Avery married his 19 year old wife, Lori Mathieson. Not only did he adopt her son, but he gave birth to four of his own with the last two being a set of twins. The Avery family was not a popular family; in fact they were quite disliked. They were known as that trashy family who owned the car junk yard. The Avery family was not the richest family either. Evidence was not properly searched and witness questions were set up so Steven Avery would be the man that the witness would choose. Steven Avery was arrested by Sheriffs order. He was denied a phone call which is legally not allowed and had his name kept off the list of inmates so that public defender’s office would not be aware of his arrest. It was obvious that they wanted Steven in there for something they know he didn’t do. After a long 18 year Steven Avery was finally released due to DNA test showing that the pubic hairs found on Beernsten was not his. In all the 18 years Steven never confessed to the crime even when offered an early release. Why? Because he knew that he was innocent. Avery lost his life in there. While in prison Steven’s wife could not handle all the children on her own. In one of the letters she wrote “I just can't handle these kids anymore. Between the crying, yelling, talking back and fighting I just can't anymore.” This eventually led to the divorce in 1988. His main concern was his children, not only because he thought he wouldn’t be able to see him but because his ex-wife would threaten their lives in the letters. After being released Steven pressed charges on the police dept. for 5,000 a year for every year he was in prison. Even though that’s a lot of money it will never make up for his time lost. The police dept. was not …show more content…

When he came back from Green Bay with his wife he called brother earl to help do some dry wall in his house, they did that all the way till they went to bed and at 11:45pm the police arrived.
