The foundation Stone Ceremony was a four days fest (from February 4th 1916 to February 8th 1916). A series of lectures were organized along with the various sacred rituals, Puja, Yagna, and Japa. Lord Harding, the then Viceroy was the special invitee for the occasion. The other dignitaries were Rajas and Maharajas of various estates, Mahatma Ghandi J.C. Bose, P.C. Roy, C.V. Raman, Mrs. Annie Besant, and Madan Mohan Malaviya. Lord Hardinge laid the foundation stone of the Banaras Hindu University, on the 4th February 1916. Sir Sunder Lal was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor and the Maharaja of Mysore H.H. Sir Krishnaraja Wadiyar was the first Chancellor of the banaras Hindu university. On the 1st April 1916 the ‘Banaras Hindu University Act’ came into effect and the Hindu university Society’’ was dissolved on the very same day.On 1st October 1917 a notification was issued and Central Hindu College deemed to be a college of BHU. In order to remove the difficulty of students who have already commenced their studies in Central Hindu College in the courses affiliated with Allahabad University, a transitory regulation was made. The effect of this regulation was that the students were allowed to continue the courses in same line with Allahabad university. The Banaras Hindu University was considered as examining body only, for the first two years. In August 1918 the Teacher Training College was established and on 19th January 1919, the first convocation for conferring degrees was organised. The first Chancellor, His Highness the Maharaja of Mysore graced the occasion with his presence.A later development was the election of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya as the Vice Chancellor of the university on 29th November 1919.
